Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks be All Sports Breakfast, All Star Panel.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Can undo yourself now. Nathan Limb from the All Star
Panel that joins us and on the blower from are
you still calling Wellington Middle Earth? Or is that long
since lost its shine? Graham?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
We never called Hi Middle.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Sorry?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Okay, well he would? How about that? How about just Wellington?
We'll just stick with that. Welcome to the program, mister freak.
Good to have you on board. Let's start things off
where everything started off quite frankly over the last week.
The excitement around the start or as they say, the
dawning a new era. You'd understand where I'm coming from

(00:57):
with that. Being an old man. A Graham, unlike Nathan.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Lynd, doesn't know what I'm so you having a stroke.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
It's an old song anyway, Graham. We're all looking forward
to this. This is going to be the one. Is
there a key aspect for you? Is there anything for
you that you really are going to hang on every
and look toward.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, I've got no idea really how it's going to go.
So I'm looking forward to it. From that point of view,
I'm a little bit tired of the new era narrative
that have been fed this week in that yes, the
Stapee Darcy, this is the first all black squad so
twenty three and a year following a World Cup that

(01:40):
has not included a debutante since nineteen eighty eight. So
to me, it just sort of seems like a bit
of a soft landing reboot, a new era, not a
sort of a brave new world. And I'm not saying
that there's anything wrong with the squad inspector. I think
it's protty the best of that has been available. But
this whole sort of it's a new era. Well it's

(02:02):
not really, it's just sort of turning up most of
the players that played in the World Cup last Well,
it's kind of a new era.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
There's a brand new coach and a brand new captain.
So it means what you choose, doesn't it freak?

Speaker 3 (02:14):
But yeah, true, But it's not a sort of a
brand new side. It's pretty much recycled side. And say,
I don't have an issue with that, but there's the
whole new era of thing. If it's being a little
bit overplayed, well, I.

Speaker 5 (02:24):
Think maybe part of the reason we might be overplaying
the new era thing is so because we're so eager
to flush the old one. I mean, the last few
years has just been so turbulent, and we're coming in
with obviously Razor as the head coach, Scott Barrett as
the captain, and we want to turn over a new
leaf because the last few years have been bizarre in
terms of being an All Blacks feman. We're not used
to seeing them lose on the regular and I think

(02:46):
everyone's wanting to just, I guess, turn over a new
page and actually, let's let's establish this new Yeah era
under Scott Robertson with some dominance and with some wins.
I think it will be different. And the key key
reason I think that is that we don't have Richie
Muwonga and how pivotal he's been over the last few
years in terms of leading the side around Damen Kenzie

(03:06):
sliding into the first five jumper. I think it will
be different. He's a different kind of player than Muhanga
and I'm really interested to see, I guess how the
game plan will work. What I'm looking for, I suppose
from tonight is I'm expecting mistakes. I'm expecting it to
be messy. I expect the All Blacks to win, but
I don't expect it to be particularly convincing. I want
to see fluidity. I want to see a clear game plan,
and I want to see the team move around the

(03:28):
park like a team. But I mean, its first test
of the year. Let's not have expectations.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
In the heavens, No, let's have huge expectations. Graham, isn't
that how it works. Doesn't raisor Robinson work best under
unbelievable pressure. Isn't that what we want to see if
there's diamonds or he just gets squished.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Yeah, I'm not sure losing Richard Muanger actually strengthens aside,
to be honest, but yeah, it'll be interesting. All the
first subtests are traditionally scrappy, as Nathan says, so there's
going to be that elements. So I'm not going to
read too much into tonight's game. I think it's after
that played a couple and then in that game against

(04:03):
Fiji in the States, maybe that's the time to start
sort of trying some of these new exciting faces that
he that he picked in the extended squad.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Look, I'm just going to defend colleague Lynn.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
There.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
He didn't say that Damie McKenzie is going to make
it the strongest side. You see, he began to mess
Richie Mwanga. I'm just defending my friend because he's bigger
than me. I'm sitting right next.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
To me, but I'm chained to the desk though, so
I can't really do all.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
A lot and a lot of the New Era isn't
very visible now this game because the nature of selections, Graham,
as you said, there are a number of new players
in there. I feel weird saying this to me. This
is a very safe selection from Razor, isn't it You
wouldn't really agree with.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, yeah, it's extremely safe. And so again there's I'm
sort of a little bit squeamish about the new Era thing.
I mean, as much as I love t J pern
Aara and I think he's the right choice of teacher
bringing back a thirty four year old half back, you know,
it's that is very safe to do. A lot of
us forward selections are pretty sa too.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
So the TJ safe years getting on, but definitely a
guy who knows that to play the game and understands presciures.
So you can understand that. What about I'll put this
to you, mister Limb, the midfield combination, because there's always
been a bit of a around Rico Yoanni and whether
that is indeed his best position. Scott has said, yeah,

(05:28):
it is. We're running him and Jordi Barrett.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
I'm going to defend Rico Yowanni here because he actually
cops a lot of crap I think, and he gets
a little He cops a lot of crap about his defense,
and he has this year over the fact that he
hasn't been scoring tries. I was, you know, sidelined for
the quarterfinal, semi final and the final of Super Rapi Pacific.
And Rico Yuwani's efforts on defense have been outstanding this year.

(05:52):
Him and aj Lamb for the Blues have been fantastic,
and I think that's an area of his game that
he really needed to step up and he has and
he's producing in Super Rugby. Love to see that are
coming to play in the All Blacks. I think he's
grown a hell of a lot over the last couple
of years and matured as a player, So I think
he is developing into more of a center. I understand,
you know, Obviously he was hugely successful in the wing.

(06:13):
He's very fast, electric kind of player. But I think
he really has stepped up in those off the ball aspects.
And yeah, I back him as as the best center
in the country. And I think him and Jordy about
are the right combination in the midfield.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Are they?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Graham? I think they are and and there are a
settle combination as well. Yeah, people say, Reque you one
should should be a wing, and you know that's his position.
It'll be quite a few years since he's actually played
on the wind. I would have thought, you know, he's
played the center for the Blues for a lot of years.
Obviously under Foster he played the center, and now under

(06:47):
Raiser there are three players as well. So an actual fact,
if you were to move him to the wing, then
he could potentially be a bit of a fish out
of water and and and not used to running those
kinds of lines that you need to do as a
wing rather than as a center.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
All Star panel Graham Busy the Sports Freak, and Nathan
kole Limb from the news room is setting a clock
by debate over the Harker when the English arrived. Pretty
standard stuff. Do you think Graham, he.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Just gets wheeled out every time, doesn't it Somewhere If
they came down and didn't bring up the issue of
the harker, then we'd feel a bit sort of when wow,
we'd feel that we're missing out. So it's just sort
of standard stuff. It's actually not brought up by many people.
I don't think it's just the standard journalists and the

(07:37):
line and you know, you've got to have a narrative
around it. And as I say, I mean, it's all
part of the tradition of England coming down here and
playing rugby union.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
So how do they respond, Nathan Limb? Why do they respond?
Should they respond?

Speaker 3 (07:51):
I like it?

Speaker 5 (07:52):
I like it when they respond. I mean, think about it.
What are the harkers that we remember? We remember the
twenty eleven final when France made the V and walk
towards the All Blacks.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
That was a response.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
We remember the twenty nineteen semi final when England made
the inverted V. Like it adds something to the occasion.
I think that that when you know, opposition put up
different structures in the way they stand or whatever they
try to make a statement. I think that's fair enough.
The All Blacks get to go out there and perform
the harker and that revs them up. I don't mind it.
I think it adds to the occasion. It adds to

(08:21):
the tension, It adds to the sort of the fuel
between the fans. You can feel it in the atmosphere.
The fans respond when something happens in response to the harker.
I think it adds to the occasion and I like
to see it.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Eight forty two, Nathan Limb's talking fan centric. You got
to like that. You'd remember Cockrel, wouldn't you. Graham Beasley,
A remember I can go.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Further back, and I remember David Kimpezy who play with
the ball under the goal post.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Oh wow, well yeah, no, don't be lost. It's a
stay here grassop on form me shortly this is news
talks Heb on the All Sport Breakfast Limb and A
Beasley in the All Star panel and it's still new
mill eighty six minute now between Portugal and France.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
You hear the last long, the last long, This is
no please.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Quarter to nine. The education of young Limb continues about
show the video of Richard Cockrell fronting up to Norm Hewitt.
What an explosion that was This is the All Sport,
All Star Panel, Graham, sports freak Beasley joins us is
a curveball for you, great news overnight, Lulu Soon you
know and now I bet you didn't a couple of

(09:33):
days ago, Graham.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
No, you're right, and I've I've I've learned a lot
about her over the last week. I just love the story, really,
especially the aspect that she grew up in Tiana, Well
grew up, spent the first five years in tian now,
and has made regular visits since. Can you name another
sportsperson from the sleepy southern village of Tiana. No, I

(09:55):
can't No, I can't eat that.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
I mean someone might sut you, We're gonna throw something
at me there.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
There's probably some otago prop from the ninety fifties or something.
I had the money great up there, but it's just
a yeah, it's just such a feel good stories defected.
Her grandparents live there. They run a health clinic using
traditional Chinese medicine. Apparently it's sort of a lodge where
you can go and stay for the weekend and feel

(10:24):
a lot better afterwards. So they're still there. She makes
those regular visits and She's now in the final sixteen
at Wimbledon, So yeah, I just think it's a great
story and hopefully she'll come back to Aukland this summer
because she'd be a mess of draw card there. Now.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
Lulu Soun's really taken me by surprise. I'm going to
be honest.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
First round, she was up against Kenwen Jing, who's the
eighth seed from China. She made the final of I
think the Australian Open. I totally wrote her off. I
was like, there's there's no way, and she came from
a set down and beat her and then she won.
In the second round, She's just won and she did.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
The same thing. She came back from a going one
set down and then fine.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
In today's game, she won two set tiebreaks.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
So she's got it. She's obviously got it up top,
isn't she.

Speaker 5 (11:09):
What that tells you that she's really mentally resilient. She
knows that she can win, and she doesn't mind coming
back from positions in which she's very unlikely to against
opposition who are higher ranked and a bitter proven I guess,
and that's what that's what gives you hope. I suppose
it's that mental resilience, and she goes to the last sixteen,
could she go even further?

Speaker 2 (11:30):
And of course partnered up with Aaron Rautlive, who is
second seed in the doubles at wimbled and they're both
going to the Olympic Games together. Oh, it just gets better.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
Such a talent account.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
Also watch out for mixed doubles at the Olympics. I'm
sorry when you well in the in the mixed doubles,
we had Michael Venus to the mix as well, obviously
specialist doubles player.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Stubble. I thought you were talking about a bloke called
Michael Stubble.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
The mixed doubles in Paris. So I'm just putting that
as a little bit of an outside chance for.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
A metal Okay, all right, I'm really interested in mixed double.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Miss Stubble as well. I was like, oh, I'm lost again.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Okay, You're not going to be lost now because you're
going right to your sphere of influence. It's almost been
forgotten that the Warriors are playing at five o'clock. It's
a It's a great curtain raiser of the all Blags,
isn't it.

Speaker 5 (12:25):
Oh it's fantastic Darcy and against the Bulldogs two are
three points. Here, there's about ten teams separated by three
points as the most hotly contested nrl RL competition in years,
perhaps ever, And this is really crucial for the Warriors
given their I guess precarious position on the ladder. The thirteenth,
you know, there's a handful of games to go. They
cannot afford to be dropping games to who Harris obviously

(12:49):
pulled out of this lineup. Dylan Walker moves and to
start bunting. Our four comes onto the interchange. Not sure
as to the timeline on to who Harris's injury at
this stage. It'll be great to see how an indefinite
suspension definitely, but they just they just say that when
they don't know, so it's a it's a risk injury.
It's the same one I believe that he dealt with

(13:09):
and missed a couple of games with earlier this season.
It'll be great to see how Tomighty, Martin and Schanel
has to be to go again as the Harvest combination.
Three games with those two together and three wins, and
the Warriors were looking really good last week, so let's
hope it continues.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
Graham, Yeah, I mean it kind of seems like every
week is either for the Warriors at the moment, all
for the last few weeks is that it is an
absolute must win anything if they if they do drop
this one, then really their chances of making the final
eight would appear to be pretty slim. If they win it,
then they're absolutely in the mix. So yeah, I'm looking

(13:42):
forward to it. And again, great timing. You got to
have that and then the Orbitack straight after. I'm going
to a club bagy game before it, So yeah, I've
got three back to back and yeah, it should be
should be good evening and you can.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Set the video I wants Marty all Blacks or maybe
you take a look at the works from what they
can do to the new era, the dawning of a new.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Era, new era that's a proper new era at Onto
whatever it is now.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
It sings off. Let's finishing off nice and quick, the
long running saga of the football Ferns No yetka Klinkiver
and a lot of their players haven't been picked for
the Olympics either, Hannah Wilkinson to name one of them.
Where are your confidence levels at Nathan Ah Okay, not high?

Speaker 4 (14:27):
They're not high.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
Yeah, I mean, it's just it's hard to get past
the I guess cloud of having your coach not their
You obviously missed those last two fixtures against Japan as well,
and New Zealand Football have just said, oh, the process
isn't finished.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
Whatever's going on.

Speaker 5 (14:42):
So there's just we don't know what's going on, and
it's really hard to look past that and focus on
the games and the players when you've got your coach
not actually in attendance, and some of the.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Players Graham when they get interviewed it very similar on
that line. We know what's going on, we just had
to play football that doesn't cover them in glory, doesn't.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
No, it's a tricky one because obviously they can't be
totally open. It's also tricky because it's the Olympics, so
you got the age restriction which changes how the how
the team is pected. So that I think answers the
Hannah Wilkinson question. But yeah, I'd just like to say
I've got more confidence in the mix of doubles than
the football firms.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
You and your Mick stubble. Again, it's going to be
the death of me. I'm going to let that go
if it turns up next week in my program, please
ring it and complain Graham sports freak Beasley from the
capital of our nation, Wellington. We thank you very much
for your time.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
I've enjoyed it.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Thank you, and we also thank you the eliminator, colleague Limb,
Nathan Limb, for your time, your understanding. And you're sitting
with the boomers while they talk about old school thing.
I'm going to show you the video. On a minute, mate,
I'm going to quick release the duct. Take a fifty one,

(16:06):
just swallow rack. There, look a move beacon.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Let's go give it a SI up.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Pistol me you like the way.
