Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News talks'd be.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
It's at the ground. Let's have we listen now to
Oma and talking to Elliott Smith. As I said, the
first thing he asked him was how he's enjoyed the
last two weeks in All Wakes camp.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
That's been good. You know, a few changed faces coaching
players as well. Some of the experienced players gone. They
have gone. But I feel like it's a real good
chance for me to step up in my game and
in this team as well.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
What have you learned, I guess the last couple of
weeks anything, you know, the major changes that have come
in camp and what they expect that of you and
your role?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Uh you just saying from the last time is Ozon
just roll from now? Your role in all the one percenters,
like when you're around the environment, my recovery, eating everything else,
everything's still the same.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
So yeah, the last couple of years been frustrating lust
and the team and into twenty twenty one and back
in now sort of two and a half year later.
Has it been frustrated a couple of years? H?
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (01:12):
And no, I you know, like being away is good
for mike career itself, but then like time away, but
I feel like I had a enough time at home
with my two kids and wife, so that was It's
been good. I'm I'm just real happy and grateful to
be back in this environment.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Do you feel like this is a good chance to
sort of grab the opportunity with both hands and now
you know, on the bench this week and able to
make an impact off the bench and really take that chance.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Yeah, but I'm just looking forward to last week, just
an age of my seat, waiting to get a call
to get up and bring some impact on the on
the game. So yeah, I fizzing.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
What's that like being on the bench at least you know,
the people said you can coming behind Cody and add
some real impact in the last thirty minutes. Do you
feel like you can do that as well? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I feel like I do that a bit harder from
like Super Rugby. Like this year, I was starting most
games and really trying to sort out my prep on
when I need to get up for like when I'm
on the bench. So yeah, slowly get in there, trying
not to get to pumped up to Lisa. Yeah, how
does that change?
Speaker 4 (02:17):
To you, you try not to play the game before
you actually out on the park.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Maybe the music I listened to put Mellow at the
Star when I met on the bus or in the
changing room. So no, yeah around there.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
What did you learn about England in the way they
want to play last week? It feels like that that's suffocating.
Umbrella defenses is really hard to get past.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
I feel like it's sort's got to match their speed,
like because they were coming off the line pretty hard
on defense. So we'll probably take a few stays back,
let them come and have you picked them off one
by one. So then hopefully by the time I get
on and the other boys get on, some of them
will be a bit tired, hopefully bring a bit of energy.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Then, do you feel like that's one of the major
things and the test ruck at the moment is trying
to find space and where you can sort of find
areas to attack because it doesn't think like there's much
space on the park. Whoever you play at the moment.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, everyone's sort of caught up to each other. Everyone's
like basically on the same level. Now, it's more at
the end of the day, there's just the skills, like
simple hands drawn passes, like there's little holes that you're
trying to pick them off. That's where where it really counts.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
There's a couple of issues at line at time last week.
I think a couple of ones lost and I think
you got done for balking. Is it right?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Is that frustrating? Is the hook? And when that happens, No, I.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Was misunderstanding between like quite a few of us. They
didn't know what was going on. We used quite a
few of Lina to each other, Tilla freestyle, some other ones.
But that's all.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
It was all easy for toy for this week with
your injury, I think it's a drawer earlier in the air.
Did you sort of what went through your head at that?
Did you think it was gonna be a bit longer
than maybe you're out for or No?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
No, really, I wasn't too bad because it's maybe the
week after I could walk on it pretty pretty fine.
So yeah, good confidence. And now for your team at
the Hurricanes and for yeah, for them to give me
back on the park. So it's good.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
I think you d bud what end of twenty seventeen
for the All Blacks. Yeah, you've had a few opportunities
here and there, But it feels like this is your
time now to to really grasp this opportunity.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Yeah, just for rather the stuff think I said in
my of my interviews before early days, I was more
just been star strugging in the All Blacks and just
taking it in but not really making the most of
my opportunity. And like now mature of it. Got two
kids and you had to get more mature. So yeah,
(04:49):
making the most of my opportunities here.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
How much would it mean to this team to start
the year off with you know, series went over England
and really sort of make a statement to Eden Park
about the way you want to play and and this
new era of an All Blacks team.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
I think it'd be a good, good stepping zone for
most of us and for the new coaching stuff and
players as well. So I think it'll be a good
stuff for us heading into the championship.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Yeah, just a couple of final ones. T J Pitinara
is injury half frustrating is a Hurricanes teammate to see him,
you know, earned his spot back after a tricky twenty
twenty three and then be injured on the weekend. How
much you're rarely hang around him?
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yes, he was down for a little bit, but knowing him,
if someone can bounce back fast, he's the man. Here's
the man I go to. I know who'll be fine for.
He'll be good.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
Have you played it, Eden Parkinger or All Black Stusey before?
Speaker 3 (05:41):
No?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Is that gonna be special?
Speaker 3 (05:42):
You know?
Speaker 4 (05:43):
The New Zealand's I guess Main Stadium to an extent
and everything that in Tawns.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
I think it'll be the first time my wife's going
to watch me, so they'll be they'll be good. I'll
probably get emotional and I think I'm not sure if
my mom and dad are coming, but they'll be nice
to play in front of them, and the All Black
Jersey said that'll be good.
