Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
The man who's got one of the best jobs currently going.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
He's over in Paris. He's at the Start, New France.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
His name is Michael Burgess, New Zealand Herald reporter Michael
how smiley are you right now?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
What a place to be my friend.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Indeed, it's an absolutely magical place to be. I was
actually just talking with a couple of real experienced American
journalists and they were saying, I don't know if I've
seen an atmosphere like this at the Olympics.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
On Day one of the Athletics, it's sold out.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
It was sold out for the qualifying this morning, which
is incredible enough, and then it sold out tonight for
the night session. So unbelievable atmosphere, mainly because you're just
going nuts whenever there's a French athlete involved, but in general, yeah,
the environment, the atmosphere here here is amazing.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
So Zoey Hobbs has done very well.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
She's going to be competing in a semi final after qualifying.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Second was in their heats race.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
So a lot on zoe Hobbs, but looking comfortable to
your expectations around that.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
She looked really good to us. You know, there was
quite a bit on his shoulders. We haven't had a
female spriends with the Olympics for her fifty years. We
all know there's been a lot of hype around her,
and she was expected to get through the heat.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
But you know, you've still got to do it, You've
got to perform.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
She was in a tricky heat with a couple of
other good athletes, but I thought she executed really well,
just flowed. She ran a season best eleven o eight.
She'll have to run better, but I like the look,
I like the confidence, and certainly afterwards she told me that,
you know, she's feeling good and really ready to perform
in the semifinals. And she's also you would say she'll
(01:53):
be happy with her drawer in the semifinals.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
There's three semifinals, and she'd.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Be in the one that's it's got the least of
the big name, so she avoided some of the big guns.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
She's still jeez, there's still.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
Five other athletes a new semi final that are sub
eleven runners, so you know there's a lot of good
athletes in there.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
But you know, she definitely has a chance.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
She'll have to either finish top two in her semifinal
or be one of the next best to across the
three semifinals. If she used to make the final, which
would be an incredible achievement, we have to mention would
be an amazing achievement, but it's certainly not beyond her.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Joined by Michael Burgess who is a starting New France.
Of course, hopefully she takes some energy even though it's
from a long long way away. But I must say
overnight the class of skiff the finn Boys got it
underway and in the forty nine ers the double Max
picked up a silver. So a reason I'm sure that's
to celebrate for the New Zealand team that they will
(02:51):
feed off of because that's the nature of this New
Zealand team.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
It's certainly what we're hearing from the athletes.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
Once things have started rolling with the woman sevens, with
Hayden Wilde, with the rowers, it just really builds within
the team and there's more confidence, more belief and they
just start inspiring each other.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
So there's no doubt that that will be a really.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
Good boost for both Zoe Hobbs and for our shot
putters in action in tomorrow's final and the sailors, they
were under pressure too because as we all know, the
sailing program did not go very well in Tokyo. They
had they had a point to prove and to get
on the podium again would be a big relief and
a big boost.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
You mentioned the shot putters Jacko Gil and Tom Walsh.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Currently right here right now, but they've been out checking
rocks around how they looked.
Speaker 5 (03:44):
That look good axtly.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
They've just they've just both qualified qualified early on, got
the automatic qualification mark, which is always relief, just sort
of get it out of the way. Both did it
on their second throw, and I just like to look
at them from the start.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Jacko Gill actually threw the first shot of the whole competition.
Speaker 4 (04:05):
He was in grid Bay. First first one up, nice
first effort and continued on from there. And Tom Walsh
has had his struggles this last few months, so it
was really important for him to.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Make a statement and he certainly did that as well.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
And talking to them afterwards just now as it walks
you to mix own, they both seem relaxed, confident, They're
just in a good frame of mind.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
And it's interesting.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
Jacko told me it's probably the best crowd he's ever
performed in front of, so that certainly sums up what's
going on in Paris, and you may.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
May not be aware of this.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Unfortunately Dylan Schmidt has taken four years out and high
hopes for Dylan Schmidt, but that's not going to be
the case. And Manny Davidson's seventh in the trampoline event,
so with all the positives, there was always going to
be negatives. That's the nature of sport.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Burge really tough on Dylan because I talked to him
about a month ago, you know, when he was still
in his last peak of training, and he was actually
quite confident about this, about the Olympics. He had a
new routine he was very excited about and just really
ready to go. So anyone who works for three years
(05:17):
and then something like that happens, you know, a sport
like trampolining, it can happen. But I imagine that it'll take
quite a while for him to get over.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Well, stead a week to go, plenty more to look
forward to, looking forward to catching up with you as well,
Michael Burgess, as you do all the hard Mahi if
you will over in France, thanks very much for that.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
May you look after yourself.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Thanks Darst. Yeah, great to be here mate.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
