Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
It doesn't come much bigger in rugby, in provincial rugby
than the ran Fairly Shield South and we've got a
chance to go pinch it. They're off to Hawk's Bay.
That game kicks off four point thirty this afternoon and
we're joined now by Sean with these the open side.
He's the captain as well and Sean, you guys are
be feeling pretty good about yourselves after rolling Otago last week.
(00:32):
Must be a good energy in the side.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, it's a good vibe around at the moment. Mate.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Yeah, we've got a good team and boys working hard
and yeah, pretty fizzed after that game and the energy
we got off the fans and the buzz around the
town was pretty cool, Matt.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
So, yeah, we're running a bit.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Of a high coming back on Monday, but got straight
back into our work and fix up a few things
get ready for this this match here which is even bigger.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
So does it give you extra heart and extra spirit
when you roll someone like Otaga your neighbors around the corner,
it must give you a huge thrill.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yeah, I guess the thrill is just what you get
off the fans, mate.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
We had eight thousand there on Saturday afternoon two o'clock
game and yeah, you know all the hardship that's been
going on the last few years, not many good results
going our way the last few years. So to give
the Stag, the Stag's loyal fans something like that to
cheer about and have a good day about on the
first game of the year was yeah, something pretty special mate.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
I love the way you pointed back to the fan
base because an essence rugby is about you guys playing,
but without the fans, the game is nothing. And as
you said, they've gone through some pretty hard times recently.
Have any come up with you any in the Hawks
bade of what you pick up the log?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:47):
Mate, The southand fans are the most loyal fans in
the country. They show up week and week out, and
obviously the when we play a Target it's called Stagg
Day and they make a day of it.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Even when it's up in Dunedin.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
There's more Southern supporters than there is a Target ones
and it's a great day mate. And from I've had
a few whispers that there's going to be a few guys,
a few supporters and whatnot come up to the game.
A few of our guys are from the North Island,
so I think there's a bit of their family and
friends traveling across from the various parts to come and
support us. So yeah, I think there'll be a strong
(02:23):
Stax connection there.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
On Saturday, Skipper and openside flanker out of South and
Choun with the joint as head of their shield challenge
against Hawks Bay. The meaning of the shield for you? Look,
you since you've been playing, I'm sure since you first
put on books, the Ring Philly Shield has been one
of your aims, if not higher honors. But this is
really big and provincial level.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Isn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Yeah, mate, absolutely, South and obviously had a bit of
a golden there with the shield through two thousand and
nine eleven. I was growing up in Southend at that
time I was nineteen years old, so I've got some
pretty fond memories of this shield and when the Stags
held it then going along to the games and whatnot
when they were defending it. So you I've got some
(03:04):
cool memories made at some mean that would be an
absolute achievement and something and I'm sure every rugby player
is even wants to do in their career time.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Did you get your mets on it when it was around?
Were you one of those guys that hung around and
tried to, i don't know, kiss it or pick it
up and give it a cattle. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
They did a bit of a country tour when they won.
It went around a few of the country schools and
clubs and whatnot. So I'm from Dipton, which is about
forty five minutes north of the Cargo where John Hardy
hailed from. So they brought the shield out there and
I've got a few photos with holding it and whatnot,
and it's actually pretty funny. I got a photo me
and Whopper Jamie McIntosh holding the shield and then I
(03:41):
actually went on to play with Whopper at a targo
about ten years later on, so that was a pretty
cool connection.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Wopper is a seriously good dude. I've had plenty of
conversations with him, really respect what he does and hopefully
in the future they look at Dipton and go that's
where you shore. And with the out winner of the
Ren Phillish Shield in twenty twenty four came from right
so you want to go down.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Yeah, no, Yeah, that would be pretty cool match. That would
be a pretty cool thing.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
What a Hawk's baboring. They'll be feeling reasonably positive about
what they can provide after what they did last week.
They'll win over North Harbor, so they'll be I suppose
bringing a lot of momentum along with that one as well.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Saw Yeah, Yeah, they've got a big physical pet. They
like to use their rolling mall. They've got a lot
of tries. I'm using that against North Harbor and that's
they sort of use it to get into the game
around the field as well, try to get peel through it.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
And kick to the corner and get you in your
own in zone.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
But yeah, they've got Fritz all out wide, none bigger
than meal mate.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Half Beck. He's pretty dangerous.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
So yeah, we're definitely looking out for him and what
he can create for them.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yeah, a lot of word around whereas he should be
in the All Black camp somewhere, so I'm sure he's
got a whole lot to prove. One last thing and set,
thanks so much for joining us on the show and
North Harbor Hawks Bay was last week. You've got to
guess what you did last week and move forward from
your victory. What are their keys out of that? What
(05:08):
do you want to take from your game that victory
over a targ on to reapply again.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I think just the way we held the ball, we
didn't give up a lot of free ball when we
had it. We had it for long periods of time,
which is something we didn't do in our preseason game
against Canterbury. So if we can look to do that
and apply pressure in the right parts of the field
by holding onto the ball, I think they'll go a
long way. We left a lot of points out there
against the Tigo and that's something we're looking to not
(05:37):
do again this week.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Any chance we get, we've got to finish it.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
As we know, bigger game, slightly better side, so limited
opportunities we're going to.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Come this week. So yeah, the more we can hold
the ball and not give up free ball, I think
we'll go a long way.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Sewn with the skipper open side up for South and
not wishing you the best for that n Philly Shield challenge,
get in there and give them stick.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, beautiful.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
