The All Blacks insist they’re relaxed whether Springboks veteran lock Eben Etzebeth starts or comes off the bench in tomorrow morning’s test at Ellis Park.

Etzebeth was out initially due to a back injury, before being included on the bench in a mid-week change.

Speculation persists he could yet be elevated to start.

Elliott Smith joins D'Arcy out of South Africa to preview the latest ahead of Sunday's test match.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildgrave from Newstalks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
EDB to the High Velt. We go now on news
Talk z eb your Sport Breakfast welcomes Elliott Smith, our
man at the hour who's calling the game between the
spring Box and the All Blacks three o'clock on Sunday
morning in the High Velt with a nose full of blood. Elliott,
you're not COVID too well, pal? How are you good?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
At? Darcy? From the finny ear and the altitude, your
nosebleeds have been been a couple of those through the week.
But I'm not the only one from the QI media
pack put it that way that has suffered from that
are indeed from the traveling New Zealanders that have come
over put it that way. So yeah, struggling to adapt
build I think, what five days since I arrived here,

(00:52):
you know, acclimatized. Now let's type anyway.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Okay, so that's you. What about the men in Black?
That's all we're interested in. How's that been going since
they've been arrived? Because, as always being in All Black,
a huge amount of pressure. Something a little special about
Alice Park, even though the All Blacks have had their
measure at Alice Park. Over the last what three out
of four test matches there, they've beaten them.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah. Absolutely, They've got a great record at Alice Park,
which you wouldn't expect given it's the spring Box essentially
version of Eden Park with not quite as good a record.
But it is their home grounds in South Africa, or
you know, their spiritual home ground, much like the All
Blacks do have at Eaton Park. But there's something about
the All Blacks, whether it's the fact that they are
kind of a little bit isolated and the fact that

(01:37):
for security reasons they can't really get out and about.
They can't really leave their hotel. They can go from
hotel to training and back again. Maybe they just sort
of get tight during the week and have a sense
of building towards a special occasion like that and speaking
to them during the week, there is a real sense
of the occasion that comes with playing at Alice Park.

(02:00):
Speaking to Jordie Barrett and other players that have played
there before, the occasion and everything around that is really
special and I think the players want to embrace that
rather than feel daunted by it. And I've used the
word challenge a couple of times this week or myself
another journalist and T J. Pettina and a couple others
have turned it. No, it's actually an opportunity, an opportunity

(02:22):
come Sunday Morning New Zealand time to show what they're
about rather than facing the challenge. It's about opportunity for
these all blacks and as I say, they're walking towards
this challenge Sunday Morning, New Zealand time.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
I'm sure they've done this. But as far as the
news around Leon McDonald was that pretty much been put down?
Is that even discussed anymore?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah? I was thrown at Scott Barrett the Captain's run
earlier a few hours ago now, and he fairly straight
back at it said that you know, obviously the feeling
for Leon and but have made the requisite adjustments to
their game and the game plan around that and the
coaches etc. Scott Scott Robinson was asked about it earlier

(03:05):
in the week too, and Jason Ryan and others as well,
and the response has been fairly emphatic that they've addressed it,
they moved on and this is about this week, so
it hasn't been too much more said about it. I
think it's interesting. You know, the attack has been shuffled
around a bit, with Scott Hansen taking on that role
and Tarmoth Allison moving into defense. I was looking at

(03:26):
some of the stats earlier, and you know a lot
of the tries the All Blacks have scored have come
through set piece so far in this tournament, so perhaps
it's a sign where they do need to improve. Their
attack is a bit more in the back line, and
maybe that's where changes need to come for the All
Blacks attack.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Key areas on both sides, where do you see the
winning and the losing of the game.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Well, I think it's gonna be the packs, doesn't it,
And it always is between these two sides, And I
really don't think there was actually much too much between
them in all honesty. I know there's been a lot
made of the spring Box, much vaunted pack, but you
look at some of the players there that have got
what i'd call a mate shift second row combination. Peters Deft,
the toy played a lot at Locke earlier in his career,

(04:10):
hasn't done so much of that recently. And in the
bloke alongside and Ruin Nokia, the captain of the Bulls
has only played a couple of tests at this point.
Ben Jason Dixon on the open side flank, He's only
played three tests for South Africa, so well, I've got
a lot of experience, yes, with Visa, said Calisi, and
then a very experienced front row. There are some inexperience

(04:31):
there fall South Africa. The All Blacks also have a
little bit of inexperienced but but not as much yet.
Eaton Blacket has only played thirteen odd tests for his country,
but Sam Cane closing in on one hundred rdsrvs similarly
a second row of Scott Barrett and Tupo v He
has been around for four years now and called the
lineouts recently. So well, I think the spring walks over
the yearge I think the All Blacks can take in

(04:54):
some confidence that maybe they can even attack at lineout
time around Pedis the Toy and Ruin Nokia a fairly
inexperienced second row combination for the All Blacks. So as always,
Darsi upfronts the key and then the back line can
sort of decide how many points it's decided by.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
And I'm presuming it's going to be fine. The footing
is going to be hard and fast and it should
be an electric encounter.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah. Absolutely, five o'clock kickoff for this one, and it
hasn't rained all week. It's certainly not going to rain tomorrow,
but cooler today Friday in Johannesburg. But it should be
twenty twenty one degrees around a back kickoff and it
get a bit cool by the end of the game.
But conditions should be pretty good. No sign of rain,
so it should be good for running the rugby, which

(05:40):
is the way the All Blacks of Cause want to
play and increasingly, as I've seen with Tony Brown, the
way the spring Box like to use the ball as well.
So look at a special occasion. Alie Park went for
a look today. It's magnificent sporting Amphitheater and you know,
alls in riddiness RSI for what should be a fantastic
a Titanic Test match.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Elliott looking forward to the call. Thanks so much for
joining us. Now go and grab your personal armed guard
and get to the nearest steakhouse and go feeding.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Yeah, I think it'll be five straight nights of steak
so yep, do that.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
