All Blacks openside Sam Cane is determined to wind down his career with an unblemished Bledisloe Cup record.

The former skipper will play his 99th test this afternoon when he runs out against Australia in Sydney.

He says seeing the Cup is just as special now as it was when he debuted in 2012.

Elliott Smith catches up with Sam Cane ahead of Saturday's clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Sam kame test number ninety nine this week, Sam, I
guess your your feelings is your stand on the cusp
of hopefully next week one hundred but ninety nine this week.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Yeah, Now you try not to sort of worry about
those things too much. It becomes a little bit harder
to get closer to it. But so it's been nice
that it's we're challenging for the winners late this week,
so like all the focus is just on winning that.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
And hopefully we can do that this week and enjoy
next week if I get the chance.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
But I know it's a lot just taken at the
stage of my career. I'm just taking what each test
does it come. That's what I've been doing since getting
back in this year.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
I know that the loose forwards are hugely competitive. I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, I think things can change pretty quickly, as I
know in rugby. So yeah, like I said, try to
take it one test at a time, and this is
a pretty important one.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Have you surprised yourself for, you know, starting three tests
in a row. Now getting back to that starting seven side.
Was it something you targeted or you're just taking it
as as it came when you returned back from that
injury and back into the All Blacks.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
I suppose like in the back of you mind, your
target's always to start test matches. It was at one
hundred percent sure where where I'd fit in and how
it worked. But I just come in and try and
be myself and how the All Blacks be the best
they can be.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
And yeah, I think it's.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, I've been happy with my form, so grateful for
the opportunity to have another crack.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
What's your feeling coming out of South Africa? You know,
two tests drop there. Do you feel that, though you
know there's a bit of optimism that you're not far
away from from really cracking It is a new test team, yep.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I think like it's a it's one of the biggest
challenges going over there, and they're are really settled team
continue on from their World Cup form, getting more and
more depth amongst this squad all the time, but where
a stage that there's been a lot of changes, not

(02:18):
just in the coaching setup, but a lot of experienced
guys moved on and for us to push them and
be in control of that test with sort of ten
or fifteen to go in joe Burg really hurt to
lose that, and then even the next one it was
in the balance, but ultimately we weren't good enough and
either of those tests to finish it off in key moments.

(02:38):
So hopefully we can take a lot of those lessons
forward as a group and be better in those key moments.
But I mean for large parts of the test we're
doing a lot of really good stuff to.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
Push them in their backyards.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
So yeah, hopefully we can just continue to improve, But yeah,
we're desperate for a good performance and a good result
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
What are those things you take from that into Australia
who are pretty long confidence. They got belted by Argentina
in Argentina a couple of weeks back. What kind of
lessons do you take into this weekend and the blood
is low.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
I think I know about the Aussies though, I don't
think it doesn't matter what happens the week before, Like
they've always got confidence.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
They can always show up and smack you if you're not.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
If you're not ready and prepared well so, but I
think some of the lessons we took for are mainly
not the control and control execution and a bit of
discipline in that final final period. Yeah, I think of
the defense, we made some good strides. Our tach shape

(03:43):
under Scotty Hanson, we're getting more and more clear because
it's only this will be only our to test with
him as our attack coach, So we're getting more and
more clear on that and hopefully that will.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Show how important is the Bloodslow to this team but
also to you personally.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
Yeah, hugely.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Look, every every year it's it's been ingrained that you
know it's up for grabs again, Like we don't own
it right now, it's equal opportunity. We want to go
there and win it. And it's sort of just one
of the best best feelings I've had in Rugbers is
having that big Bear's Low cup in the changing sheds
and following up with beer and everyone havn't trying to

(04:24):
have a sip as it spills down their front and
the changing sheds, and I remember the first time as
a twenty year I'll come into the All Blacks and
seeing the slow and the team room a lot. I
was just blown away and took a photo and couldn't
believe I've seeing it in real life. So to be
here all these years later and still competing for it.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
They managed to win it every year.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
I played for it and do everything I can to
make sure it stays that way.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
You keep that in text and artist said this morning,
you don't want to decide that loses it. Is it
fear or that motivation that drives you as as a
team to keep that record done?

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah, I think a lot high performance sport, it's everyone's
motivation is a little bit different. But like the fear
of of losing, it can be equally as motivating as
that the thrill of winning.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
So yeah, sports, the t's on the other side of
the room. Play you've played with didn't play with the
Chiefs this year, but now playing with the All Blacks.
What have you've seen from him as that next generation
of player that's going to be that All Blacks loose FOROT?

Speaker 3 (05:24):
I think he could be a pretty special player. He's
a pretty special human for it. I think he's just
gone twenty two, very professional and physically a specimen as well.
I think, yeah, he's got it all and look forward

(05:47):
to seeing how he goes. I think as we saw
through the super We just gained confidence the more games
he had, and I don't know what he would have
only played, wouldn't be lucky to have played twenty odd
first class game. So yeah, he's been awesome and I'm
to see him get another shot.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Raiser mentioned this morning, it's obviously your swan song. Have
you given much thought to that approaching at one test
at a time and whenever the final test you do
end up playing is is just going to be that?
Do you give a much thought at the month?

Speaker 4 (06:13):
No? Not really.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
I try to try to get too caught up a
lot the sentimental things obviously, like if I can get
to one hundred or whenever my last test is like
post that, I suppose to be a chance to be
proud of what I've done in the Jersey and look
forward to the next chapter. But you know, right from

(06:36):
the start of the year, it's just been about getting
my body right, and then once I got in here,
even when I wasn't playing, I just want to contribute
the best I can to get the All Blacks playing
the best weekend.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
So yeah, like when you're.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
You're focusing on each week and narrow it down to
just winning each day then you don't allow the mind
to sort of drift too far away to those sort
of things. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
Just lastly a judgment was in this all Blacks environment
last year now and the wall many would have done
that switch over that quickly. What do you expect from
a Joe Schmitt Wallaby's team this Saturday.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
I really enjoyed working under Joe. I think he's an
awesome coach.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Yeah, I suppose it hurts a little bit that was
so quickly that he went over, but.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
I think he's a guy that really enjoys a challenge. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
He was always big on driving, like a lot of
the work, great things off the ball, a lot of
the unseen work that creates opportunities for others and the
Aussie has always been good at that anyway in my opinion.
So yeah, I think they'll come out and try out
work us in a lot of areas, which is I
feel like as a lose fortuit, it's exciting for us

(07:49):
that would pride ourselves on that area as well.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
So I think it's going to be a pretty tough
test match.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
