Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from newstalk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
One week it stands between New Zealand and victory and
the White Ferns have broken the ten game losing streak
with an essential victory against India at the start of
the C twenty World Cup.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
And what a start for the Ferns. Lea to who
joins us now instrumental in that defeat, although Leah, it
wasn't just yourself. There were contributions right across the board.
That is a team effort, extraordinarily satisfying conten considering we
have come from in the last ten matches.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Yeah, get a Darcy. It was an outstanding game all round.
You know, we've obviously had a bit of a tough
time over the last of the six to eight months,
but to put a complete team performance out there today
was just an amazing feeling.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
And I talk about during following you on Twitter that
old saying catches win matches. I know there was I
think there was two grass chances, but one of them
was right toward the end. But in general that the
outfielding was impressive.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Yeah, look, we've done a lot of work on our fielding,
and it certainly the case. You know, catches with matches,
and I think when you know the wickets are going
to be a little bit slower here, there's probably going
to be a few more opportunities as well. So it's
something that we're working body hard on and it was
nice that a few week to hand today and.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Your own performance are extraordinarily happy with what you put
in there. I remember talking to a few years back
when you got dropped from the team, and your attitude
was fantastic. You didn't like it, you weren't happy, you
didn't hide from it, but you were like, you know what,
I'm coming back. This is not the end of lea
to Whoho, and look where you are now. That itself
must be personally very satisfying.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
Yeah, it is extremely satisfying. You know, it was a
tough time a couple of years ago there, but there's
been a lot of cricket played in between that, and
a lot of cricket that I've been a part of,
and you know, I just keep trying to do what
I can for this team and trying to put us
in positions to help us win games. And thankfully today
we did that and Yeah, a lot of people sit
up today and it was just a great, a great
team victory to be a part of Oil.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Rosemi Meha did particularly well too, wiping things out towards
the end for overs nineteen runs picked up four wicked
so U three for fifteen off four. This is great reading.
As far as the batting is concerned, I suppose you
look to your superstar Sophie Devine, fifty seven of thirty
six balls coming in the middle of the innings. That
(02:35):
is what you want from me, a skipper, is it not?
Speaker 4 (02:38):
Yeah, it certainly is. And you know, I think she's
moved down to that number four role in the last
couple of years and probably been you know, finding a
feat there as well. But I think the way that
she played today is exactly how we wanted to play
in that Metal Partner. I don't think she can actually
do that without the start that we had. And I think,
you know, we put fifty five on in the power
Player or something like that. Georgia Plummer outstanding at the
top there, and Susie Baits ever consistent, you know, odd
off twenty. So yeah, look, I think if you look
(03:01):
through the order, they all chipped in and did what
we needed there as well. So yeah, just bloody happy
and the bowling unit, you know, could not be prouder.
You know, there's been a lot to talk about spin
bowling in these conditions and you know, I've seen bowlers
has probably had to change our tips a little bit.
And you know, for Rocco and myself to take seven
those wickets today is extremely satisfying.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
And Georgia has been in some great form recently, hasn't she.
And look, with all due respect, but you look at
the likes of your bases and your curves and the divines.
If they don't fire, it's almost like the team's going nowhere.
But Georgia Plumbing's going now there's a future here.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
We're all right, Jack, Yeah, I think internally we've known
that and we're stuck with that, and you know, we've
we've copped a little bit of criticism, not going to lie.
You know, it's been a tough sort of six to
twelve months in the media and getting a bit of
stick and it's probably well deserved as well. But the
way that we know that we've been working bloody hard
and backing those youngsters to go out there and put
on those performances. You know, we've seen the hard work
(03:56):
that especially Georgia there. You know, she's been put in
a position to open the batting at international cricket with
you know, not that much domestic cricket behind her. But
we're starting to see the fruition of you know, keeping
believing and keeping backing her in that role.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
And yeah, you have taken a bit of stick, and
I know that new as players don't mind it because
you're not getting the results, you're going to get the criticism.
That's part of being a pro sports person. So that's
appreciated from our point of view anyway, that you don't
pack us sad and don't talk to us. So but
coming around after that, the first game of the T
twenty over and dubay to do that and to lay
(04:31):
it down and it's not like it's against the nobody
team either. The Indians didn't come down in the last chow.
They must be hurting.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Yeah, I think there were some unhappy faces in there.
Dugout to be fair and you know we've been in
that position in the last six months as well, so
we certainly know how that feels. But yeah, just extremely
satisfying to put a performance like that out there early
and I guess sort of lay a marker down and
show you know what we've been doing behind the scenes
and what we've been talking about doing and the results
haven't quite come our way, but for them to start
clicking now it's bloody good timing if you ask me,
(05:01):
and hopefully we can continue that. We know it's only
one game. You know, it's the long tournament with got
Australia up next to we're obviously the defending champion, so yeah,
we know it's one game. We'll enjoy this wednes tonight,
be extremely happy about it, but will turn up to
training tomorrow and start putting plans in place for those assies.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Well, we've heard the ground running, and the criticism comes
to the fact la that people actually care, because if
they didn't, they wouldn't say anything, and that is a
brilliant part of that. Hey, I missed right at the
very start because I was still in the middle of dreamland.
I believe there was some controversy over a runout with
a Melia cur Can you talk us through what actually
(05:39):
happened there?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Yeah, it was an interesting one. It's not one I've
actually seen before in any cricket, let alone international cricket.
But I think what the umpires had had called over
and the fielder hadn't thrown the ball and yet and
both he tried to be a bit sneaky and steel
an extra run and they merely ended up getting run out.
But the umpires had decided that they'd called over and
handed the hat back to the bowler, so it was
(06:04):
a dead ball essentially, and it did hold the game
up for a fair while. But yeah, I think that
decision probably could have gone either way and we would
have copped it one way or the other. And at
the end of the day it didn't actually make that
much of difference. I think nearly got out a couple
of balls later. But yeah, a little bit of controversy
that no doubt'll be talked about a bit indeed.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
But the fact that you were rebounded from that and
actually went away to get that when and comprehensibly by
fifty eight runs and absolute joy to wake up and
watch that. And thing's missed you guys, bat but definitely
score you guys bowl lea to who congratulations and thanks
so much for your time here in news talk. Z'd
be hugely appreciated.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Thanks very much, Darcy appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
