Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from newstalk zedb oh.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Strong at KIWI News. From qualifying at Bathurst's last night,
KIWI driver Matt Payne and co driver Garth Tander have
claimed provisional poll after qualifying. Twenty two year old Pain
pipedcam orders by point zero zero six of a second.
The top four drivers separated by point zero one nine four,
so things are tight and Pain will look to secure
(00:33):
poll in tonight's Top ten shootout, which also features kiwi's
Andre Heimgartner and Richie Stanway. So great at this early
stage of qualifying to see and New Zealander Matt Pain
all right in the mix, Let's talk all things Bathurst
now great to welcome on to the show. He's Ellen
Herold Motorsport Car correspondent Eric Thompson. Morning to you.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Eric.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Exciting time, isn't it at this time of year?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Give Ernie and it certainly is. It's fantastic. But I've
got to say I don't think the twenty odd years
of watching bath Is I've ever seen so many crashes
in practice and in the Top ten show it's been
like like really interesting and I thought, I feel for
some of those teams, especially David Reynolds team and even Dull.
(01:16):
They fixed the Scott Pie card, but Will Davidson's DJ
Johnson card. They would have been working all night to
try and get those two cars fixed because they were
some all mighty books during the during qualifying, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
What can those crashes often be put down to eric
just the genuine competitiveness for teams wanting to get handily
placed for the next phase and phase of qualifying.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Absolutely everybody was going I think, yeah, it was way
less than a second that covered the top ten and
the top ten shootout. I think it was point zero
six and a second that covered the top five. But
this year they're all having to race on the hard tire.
They're having janets to some of the drivers in the
run up. Nobody really knew how that was going to
go around Batist because normally in the past they've raced
(02:02):
on soft tires and you know you can lean on
those a lot more and a little bit more forgiving
loads board grip. But the problem is the really high
high tire degradation, which means you know, the tiers are delaminated.
We've seen out a couple of times in Baptist over
the years when the tire just explodes. There was that
incredible one when Jamie win Cups tire just launched itself
(02:24):
and put him into the escape road. So everybody was
on the hard type but pushing as hard as they
were on the soft tires, and they're just flying off
left flight and center. So the drivers in the top shoe.
That's going to be interesting.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
In this this is true.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, got to be fascinating, isn't it. Matt Payne obviously
a great result for him last night, nudging ahead in
a very tight set of seat of qualifying and he's
obviously the provisional pole before this top ten shootout. What
were the expectations on Matt Pain, the Kiwi driver leading
up to this.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Quite high, both with himself and his team, But he's
thinking of that combination many Pain's been quick. He's in
his second season in supercars, he's got a couple of
wins under his belt wraps when he came into the
main game. He's been super quick. He had the poles,
it's qualified. He's had a bit of bad luck over
the years. Over the last couple of years in the championship.
(03:18):
But he's always been quick. He loves Bathfist and then
you've got dart tender. There's a man pedigree. I think
this is about his twenty fifth year at Bathurst. He's
got five wins already. He knows his way around there
like nobody's business. But Andy, the really interesting thing is
they both like the car set up very very similar.
Sometimes in these situations where you've got two drivers who
(03:41):
like cars set up quite different, so engineers have to
find a middle ground, which means that both drivers getting compromised.
But not with Matt Pain and dar Stander. There'll be
a real threat come someday.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
What's the strategy needed when you got that fastest time
now to sort of transfer that to the shootout? How
are they going to be preparing for today?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
I think the idea will be the team seen principals,
team owners and the mechanics are saying, look he made
the top and shoot out it's a long race, you know,
go for it, but just don't bid it into the
wall please. I think will be the main strategy so
they don't have to work all night. But you know
what all the drivers are like Kenny pop position the
Baptist is a huge feather in your cap, so they'll
(04:22):
be going for it. But I think everybody's well aware
what those hard tires are like. So I think Becky Payne,
isn't it a really good chance to get pold?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah? It would be great from a Kiwi perspective, wouldn't it?
And then why was he got to Andre Himgartner. Richie
stand Away well in the mix as well? So some
genuine key we contenders here.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Eric, Oh, they certainly are Richard stand Away, you know
last year's winner with Shane ben Gersbergen. He's quick, very
very quick, very underrated driver. I reckon it's quite possible
if the car's like for him and he's in the groove,
he'll be threatening for polls. Andre. Andre has been there
and they're about the Baptist year after year after year.
(05:02):
The place has not been kind to him, so maybe
that you the word will turn. But I think those
all three TVs are on was a really good chance.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah? Great? And just to wrap up, Eric, can you
just you know, we all know the tradition of Bathurst
and how big it has been, is it still genuinely
the biggest thing in motorsport in this part of the world.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Gift to me. It's like the Southern Hemisphere is Indy
five hundred and the biggest motorsport event in the Southern Hemisphere.
I know some may says will go about Formula one,
but yeah, this is Bathurst. This is big, big d
eh tim tops, lots of argie bargie, lots of drama
and especially if it's forecast the rain oh nice.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Off the chart, Yeah, exactly, always a great one. Well,
it's all day tomorrow, Eric, really appreciate your time and
your insight. That is Eric Thompson, New Zealand's Heralds Motorsports Correspondence.
