Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildergrave from News Talks EDB, All Sports Breakfast, All Star Panel.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
And our All Star Panel four Today consists of the
man I accidentally called Mac but but it is Matt
and it was a genuine mistake.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
I wasn't trying to be funny, Matthew. Good morning to you.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
Yeah, good morning, Darcy. It's just on weather conditions for
the A League game tonight. Darcy. It's dawn relatively fine
and Wellington of course blustery freeze, but no rain in
the forecast, so I'll be there. My son's actually walking
out with one of the teams today, which is fantastic
for him. But it should be a good one at
Scott Stadium about five pm this evening, well I.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Would certainly hope. So it's promised a lot, but Hams
McKay will deliver. That's the next question.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Get AMers, how are you?

Speaker 5 (00:58):
Oh Jos, I'm magnificent, can I Matt? And look, you
know Wellington today this is you know, this is really
breathing some.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
Sort of fire in me.

Speaker 5 (01:06):
I at the thought of a local football derby of
these proportions, given the way that the Phoenix are the
real deal, the proven thing, and that then there's the
new kids on the block from up this way. Yeah. No,
I'm very excited about that. It makes many other things
for a great sporting weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Well, boys, we're in the panel. We had a lot
happening this week in sport. In fact, we've had a
lot happened in the last few months in sporting.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Fact, we've had a lot a lifetime of it.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Let's start on the tinder box that is Joe Marler
Matt not the smartest.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Thing to do in the world. I mean really, it's like,
you know, touching wet paint. What did he expect, Matt.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
Yeah, here's a guy who I think after seventeen minutes
with all back England tests through our winter, was hopped
after about seventeen minutes. So I think he's a bit
of a rente quote male of these days. But it's
something we get very passionate about. The Harker. I know
Stephen Jones Semoush. You remember he always used to throw
Petro on the fire when we all back to it,

(02:03):
and Marla has done a bit the same. You wonder
where we need to drift not listen or not fire
shots back. But the huck is very sacred to New
Zealanders and as soon as someone mentions banning it or
taking away or doing it differently, that we get very upset.
So yeah, not good from Marla, but I'm sure these
English guys will continue doing it throughout the years.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
I wonder why we give it any oxygen myself, to
be perfectly honest, off the back of two losses to
sound there, we've got enough to motivate ourselves. We're not
playing the wombles of wimbled, and we're playing at a
sensational venue against a really good footy side. I mean,
I just seeing some of the guys that don't don't
make this England side. So I don't know, I don't
know who advice. I wouldn't have even had the all
back skipt to come back and say something to Joe Marler.

(02:48):
You know, if it had been a seriously good footy
player like Tom Curry or Marcus Smith, you might have
given it a bit more, you know, a bit more gravitas.
But no, I just think we shouldn't give any more oxygen.
Big Joe, you know, just think about your next gear caup.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Well tell you what though, it's a fantastic for us
in the media. That is what challenges like that.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Who was the artie that used to coach the Welsh
side to say I apologize for calling New Zealand two
POxy little Island. It's three you know, Scott Scott, Scott
got somebody in it.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah, yeah, I can't remember that.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
It doesn't matter. Let's move on to our next topic.
Hate Matt Damian McKenzie. He's been benched.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
That that that is the right move to get Bowden
Barrett in the pivot position.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Isn't it. Well? I think that the test match that
is well, the venue that has trickled and the team
is Hamerseds is England. They're not They're no easy beats.
They're a fantastic rugby side at the moment. So yeah,
I think Barrett's experience is calmness is all important. But
I think the all back straight hand last week fellas
when McKinsey started at ten in Japan, I believe Barrett

(03:56):
left to go early to London. So yeah, I think
Barrett's the right call and I do like it as
everyone does. I think Kimsey coming off the bench late
in the game and just and showing as where so
it's Scott Robinson's been seen as a very conservative selector
so far, and I think Barrett's so one of those

(04:17):
options he had to pick for this Test match.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Hamous, with this, he is better off the beams because
he provides so much more with their little legs that
he's got going on.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
He can really cut some capers, can he.

Speaker 5 (04:28):
Yeah, well, I think I mean he seats the twenty three,
doesn't he? And McKenzie and look, I feel from you've
been given the job all season, then you suddenly you're
not the part. It's the right guy and he's kind
of at that age and level of temperament where he
will where he will park the all Blacks in the
right places around the park, and I think you'll see
too many give it away chip kicks over the top

(04:48):
or it's rarely up to him to be the back
line in general. And whether that's on a permanent basis
or whether we just were in a holding patent to
Mwanga returns.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, Hamous, just a question to your Darcy. The concern
I've got about this theme is speaking about showing the
hand Japan. Sam Kane started at seven last week and
he started at seven till tomorrow morning? Where are we
with the number seven stocks at the moment? It seems
have got no trust in anyone else.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, he's probably God having a love affair with his shoulder,
raisor Robinson. When it comes to Sam Kane, it's an
interesting selection.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
What do you make of that one? Themous?

Speaker 5 (05:28):
Yeah, it's a bit of a bromance selection. I think
I'm in there's a great deal. I mean, I don't
think there's anything wrong with what Sam Kaine is doing.
And good on for putting his hands up. But you
can sort of see that Papa l like they seems
have been sort of like sort of like shipped the
doors sort of shut on him. I'm not you know what,

(05:49):
what what is the next thinking around seven again? Like ten,
it's not really that clear and there is no Malwanga
to sort of bring back into the picture. But around
the country when you look at the go you know,
and and I tell you why I enjoyed the NPC.
You know, I finally getting asked to come back and
call about the game. That watched a lot more than
I thought I would. And you know, there are there

(06:10):
are guys around I believe with the skill sets, you know,
and and it may take an adaptation of AYRSA or
something like that. You know, somewhere we're going to have
to we're going to have to find that seven with
his black guy who's definitely got you know, please, he's
in the mix. But again I just think it's like it's.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Like, well, this is what he's doing. Is he's pegging
the team to beat England. He's not looking at the future.
That's what he's doing.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
Best players, I think.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
You have to doute right, he's going down to the
football games. I know Bucky's absolutely fizzed by this. Look,
let's take the build up gives us a great game.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
I hope it's not a fizzit.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Not only is it the first derby in the alley
from he's head on sides, it's one place too. This
is night mess stuff for the Australians, isn't it Buggy?

Speaker 4 (06:59):
Well exactly, And I think if we look at it
this this talk of twenty thousand pre sales. I said
earlier on the weather is going to be good for tonight,
so expect a decent walk up. So you're probably expecting
twenty five to twenty seven thousand which I think are
not too bad. People are saying it should be sold out.
I think this is the first derby and I'm sure
it'll be the first derby of plenty. I don't think

(07:21):
it'll be a phizzit, but it'll be interesting to see
how the both the teams play their hands. Per se Auckland.
Charlotte's very very good at the back, but it's got
to pay the Phoenix to unlock it. With the cost
of Barvarusus and these guys, I expected to be of gradication.
It's by stadium and I'm sure it'll be a gradication
when the Phoenix traveled back to Aukland. So look, I'm

(07:41):
really looking forward to it, and I think it's great
for the New Zealand spawning landscape that we've got a
derby now.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
It's huge, rather it was in the NRL, but that
don't ever happen. It's going to cost sixty million dollars
a haymas. My big concern here for the Phoenix is
the weight of their legs after coming back from Perth. Look,
they got the job done, they got the points well done,
but are they going to be a hundi? And when
it comes down to the crunch. Are they still going
to have the fitness Well.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
Yeah, look, let's hope there are the resources within the
Phoenix organization to make sure that because you know, you know,
fir it's another continent away, isn't it a completely different
kettle of fish than just crossing the Tasman So hopefully
they've had you know, all the rehab team on twenty
four to seven. But that will be a challenge. And
you're right, I think it is sort of a ten

(08:28):
percent opening of the door for the for the for
the sort of the darlings of Auckland. I haven't I
haven't heard a.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
Negative word, so, you know, good, good, good derby.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
I just hope that it doesn't come about two teams
where people tune in for a derby. I want to
see people fired up for you know when that when
when the Phoenix attack. You know, I hope it grows
the league, so to speak, grows that it just doesn't
become sort of a well, it doubles the momentum. Let's
hope one plus one might will equal three in terms

(08:57):
of our interest in the competition.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Yeah, well, I one on one to me equals eleven.
But that's because I'm odd, So I'll.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
Let's see that.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
And that doesn't surprise me totally coming from you, because
you do have some abstract thoughts. Wou'd come from a
magnificent play wagon.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
That's a nice thing to say, abstract thoughts.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Will take that.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Hamous McKay Matt Buck on the All Star panel looking
at the big sports stories of the week coming up next,
Liam Lawson, what a morning it's been for him. We'll
talk about netball as well with Grace Wicket and it's
all to come here on News Talks THEREBA forty five.

(09:38):
It's twelve minutes to nine, All Star Panel. Hamish mackay,
Matt to Bucker joining us and he's flicked.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
The Textan's pretty simple, Sam Kaine is still the best
seven in the country.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Things for that, Andy right, let's move to race cars.
You can tell how happy I am Liam Lawson. Matt
Buck has been astonishing, no surprise to people know who
know what he can do and what he's achieved so far,
but is at that.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Top level now.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
He's put the frighteners up everybody this morning. He qualifies
eighth in a match box car for the sprint race.
As they're no end to what this bloke can do
and he's no nice guy, is he.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
He's loving it now.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
It's fantastic for New Zealand. Again another Jigsa puzzles. He's
on the sporting landscape of our country. And I think
he called him the earlier on in your show, Darcy,
that he was driving a Tonka toy of to say,
but I just wonder whether these kids these days you
talk about most sports, hamers, rugby, cricket, these guys come
through the ranks and when they get to the level,

(10:40):
like the top level, they have no fear of these
young guys. And Liam Lawson's showing that he doesn't care
about his opponents and he's going to go Cameron Tong's
against and he's no you guy on davill Or a
couple of cats and he's he's ready to fire. And
if he gets into the right car. Darcy, you know
about this more than I do. Jeez, he could be anything.
But I just want to him to continue the way

(11:01):
he's going and behaving by the way he's going, you know,
fight fire with fire. It's a very ego driven sports.
But I don't mind what he's shown at the moment.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Well, Michael Schumachers had the nicest guy in the world,
ended up with seven World championships. Not about being a
nice guy, is it, Hamus McKay. It's about winning, that
is it. Like most sports, but especially in one, like
you win, everybody else starts paying you the reverence you deserve.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
Right, Yeah, I think so. I think we're now seeing
that with you know, we saw it obviously with Hamilton.
I mean, I don't know how anybody can could love
Lewis Hamilton. Maybe his parents, but you know when we
see it now with the staff and although he's been
sort of rained in a little bit with it, you know,
because he was he was reckless last time out against

(11:45):
against Norris. But I'm loving it. Hate one question. I
know Liam Wilson with superbly, but it was weird the
young Englishman finished up. I mean I knotted off towards
the other practice one. Where did is it beermon? Did
he finish up quite high?

Speaker 4 (11:58):
It's still Oliver.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I thank you went out in Q one.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
I'm not one hundred percent enough to read cheatocused on
on what laws he's doing.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
You're the other young guy.

Speaker 5 (12:10):
Yeah, he was sitting in for maguson I think for
the sprint race, but he was going all right too,
which is great to see. You just want these guys
who are driving, let's face it, inferior cars like Lawson
isn't much, but they're up there. It's just such a
beautiful thing to watch. It's gripping, is it's just and it's.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
A wonderful race track.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
And I think the beauty of Formula one is that, yeah,
you've got to be got good car, you've got a
better chance.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
But generally the best drivers end up in the best cars.
That's genuinely what happens.

Speaker 5 (12:37):
Isn't it that beautiful flow. But I'm loving the fact
we've got a driver in Liam Lawson and we've got
our key wee team from meadow Bank Primary School and
Rembia are often, you know, as tenuous as that link
is these days. McLaren's that you know, we're a New
Zealand team and we've got laws and I think there's
a massive interest.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
It's fantastic, It really is good.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
He let's finish things off with a bit of net ball,
Grace Wicker, she's that.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Good that they'll be in the rules surely, Bucky.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yeah, exactly, Darky. I was thinking about this earlier on
this morning. She is that good and I think we
need to get over ourselves that we have this plethora
of talent in New Zealand netball in particular. I won't
discuss rugby at this stage. Yeah, she's the superstar of
the game. She's probably in the top two or three
players in the world, so I will be I think

(13:23):
the Dame's kind of been over backwards just to try
and get her back from Australia, and I think New
Zealand Netbulls should come to the party. It's a no
brainer for me.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
Yeah, absolute no brainer. I mean if they don't, I
can sort of see the smoke from the from the pistol,
from the fire and the shot and the own foot.
I mean, that's great.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
This is next level.

Speaker 5 (13:43):
You don't turn around from where we were to where
we are now after three out of four in the
constellation without her. I'm just going to say it, we don't.
And so you know, look, look it's just got it.
You've got to move Heaven and it's got to happen.
It'll just be such a retrograde, stupid backward set that
you know it surely is a nation of sports lovers.

(14:04):
We just can't tolerate. She has to be available, made
lit to be available.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Well, I got this theory.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
The saying goes with all sports guys, and just enclosing
quick from the both of you. The New Zealand Netball's rules,
they can adjust them however they want.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Surely, yeah, Bett Darcy again, no brainer. Just go out
and get the best players. And she is the best
player at the moment.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
What worked for Laura Langman, didn't it, Amish well exactly.

Speaker 4 (14:33):
So there we have.

Speaker 5 (14:34):
We have a precedent has been set your honor. And
on that note, I just say, you know, I close
my case, just peck her.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Good luck this weekend, guys, enjoy yourself, whatever you do
and however you're doing it. Matt bark Amish Mackay, thanks
very much for your time on the All Star panel.
Seven minutes away from nine pinty around somewhere you won't
see them piyy.
