A chance to stake a claim for the soon-to-be-vacated Silver Ferns goal shoot bib looms at the Fast5 World Series in Christchurch this weekend.

Maia Wilson, Martina Salmon, and Saviour Tui will shoulder the shooting responsibilities at the tournament for New Zealand.

The trio —along with Amelia Walmsley— are in the running to replace Grace Nweke in 2025  after her domestic move to the New South Wales Swifts.

Head Coach Yvette McCausland-Durie joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the tournament.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk z'b Fast five.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Netball is the flavor and now it's a hect a
couple of days of netball action and we're joined by
the head coach of the Silver Thurnsteen Avett. Mccauslan jury
that welcome to the show. You'd be pretty amped. I'd
suggest it's a pretty full on two days, isn't it,
And welcome.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Look that is more than that. It's everything that it says,
isn't It's fast and fast and furious.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
So we've had a good couple of days here already
just prepping and we've got three trainings and and looking
forward to our first match this morning. And of course
we've got you know, the other present challenge of all
of the top nations that are here. So lots of
learning's gone on. I've had a coach at this level
before in terms of this style of game, and there's

(00:58):
been obviously a few key changes to the format. So
there's lots of really good learning.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
The key changes what are they of it?

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:05):
This three of them that are significant. One of them
is that the what previously was a minute thirty of
power play. That is now extended to two minutes and
it happens at the end of each quarter, so each quarter.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Is six minutes.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Four of that is general play and then two minutes
is powerplay and within the tower powerplay. The second change
has been that you can only get double points if
you're shooting in the two point zone or the three
point zone, so no long does the one point count
under the post. So that's going to really ramp things
up in terms of some long shots. And then the
third one is you have to.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Continue to go forward.

Speaker 4 (01:42):
So you've moved through one third of the court, and
of course it's split into three thirds, you've got to
keep moving forward to the next third, so you cannot
pass backwards into the other third that you've just come from.
So when there's those of five people, that's been really
good technically to think about how you play and availability
and movement of players.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
So yeah, yeah, it's been fast paced, but very much
to keep part, well.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
What's the drive behind those changes? How do they justify
those events?

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Yeah, the biggest one is the game, just to make
it really distinctly different from the seven side game. Technically,
it's fast and I think too. One of the big
things they talked about is it stops a little bit
of the gamesmanship and just forces you to play, so
it's constantly moving and I think they are really great changes,
and the World Rules Group have looked that this is

(02:35):
the first trial of it. They'll assess it and then
decide whether that remains or these other changes. That's in
fact the competition continues, so hopefully it does.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah for sure. So know it's well attended, well watch
people love the nature of it. You're taking on some
pretty well. You're taking on the best six teams in
the world, aren't you really? Australia angling Jamaica South Africa
and you gained how strong are these teams are? Based
on their lineups in regular netball, if I can call.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
It that, Yeah, quite so. A number of teams have
got completely different lineups to what you would normally see
in a seven side game. And I think it's a
really great thing in a sense. For our players here
in New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
There's a number of them.

Speaker 4 (03:19):
This will be the first time they've been exposed to
international netball to see a different style of play. And
we've got Jamaica first up, so that's going to be
a tough one for us this morning. But a side
of that, I think one of the biggest pieces is
it's a different game and the format is quite different,
so it does, you know, provide opportunities for different styles

(03:39):
of players.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
For example, we've got three bowl shoots.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
But because of the distance that they get to shoots
off in the range, it's irrelevant. They can play goalsh
go with that without a wing a pack. Make sure
it's really mobile. I think the other great thing is
they're all going to count court. It's not like you
have a group and they stay on for a long period.
It's requires because of the impensity to really move the
players in and out of the game.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Who are the athletes of strength on your side? Who
do we look to carry the burden of trying to
lift from last year where second place is probably not
good enough.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
That's our goals, certain need to make that final and
then win the match. And probably our biggest one is
for those who have had knowledge of it. And Taylor
Earl has been This is her third time at a
fast five, so she's got a really good feel for
the game. Our captain Mikayavitch beats and she's been here
before and again has a good feel for the game.
So I think those who have come in with a

(04:38):
little bit of experience ye that they just settles into
them really nicely. Edna previously has been a commentator here,
so I don't know, just by osmosis of being in
the space is a really good understanding of what's going
on and having been involved in that level. So I
we've got good cover. We've got some young ones in there,

(04:58):
and Catherine Hall in the defense end and Martina Salmon
down in the shooting end, and people have seen bit
through the am Z Premiership, but this will be a
really great opportunity to see the mixed But there's just
so much space out on board.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
It's actually awesome. It's a really neat format.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
You've got some pretty high powered company in the coach's
box for the first time. What you've picked up three
am Z Premiership titles and with you as I and
she has picked up well the last two and the
bounds of the mystics, right, so you know what you're doing.
You've got the horsepower up stairs, haven't you.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Well, you'd hope so to be sitting.

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Neither of us have coached last five, so we came
in with lots of ideas and most of them have
worked pretty well. But yeah, with three trainings, it's really
just been about understanding the rules, but more importantly understanding
the playing group we've got and what strengths they have
and how we can work to put them into positions
they excel.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
So we're enjoying it.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
It's not always nice to work with a new coach
and you know, to learn off others, so it's a
real privilege to be leading this through.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
We're looking forward to the challenges ahead and they'll be for.
