Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildegrave from News Talk, SEDB Paull Sports Breakfast, All Star.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Pedal, an Er All Star panel, now the Old School Originals.
It's mister Paul Allison, mister Phil Gifford, Paul, Welcome.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Morning, Darcy.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
You will always think your passport if you want to
come down to the Deep South to watch the tourist
cell phone.
Speaker 5 (00:29):
There's something about that race though, you know, it's been.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Around for as long as I can remember, and you
always read about how punishing and bitter and mean it is,
but people absolutely love it.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
Feel good it on. Any of you giving in the background,
have you attended that event yet?
Speaker 6 (00:45):
No, Dues, I haven't, but I'm actually I mean usually
with teasing each other at the stage of the show,
but quite seriously, if you ever get a chance, I
just think road cycling is one of the most fascinating
sports there is and when I was a very young
journalist I covered to Auckland to Wellington bike races when
Tenater back, who's if you're old enough to remember who
he is, Paul, you might, but is one of the
(01:06):
legends of New Zealand cycling. And I just found it
endlessly fascinating in every respect, from the tactics to the
courage of the riders to the whole damn thing.
Speaker 7 (01:16):
So yeah, you get a chance to sleep at it break.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
No, I should have said a former colleague of mine,
Brenda van Nisaru, is now the media guy for the Phoenix.
He actually went over to Tour de France and he
followed that round in a camper van.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I mean that would be amazing.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
Anyway, Enough of that, let's get.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
On to the task at hand. Paul Allison, all Blacks
Ireland big? Is it the biggest game of the year,
the hugest game of the year.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
Why if the bookies got them at two sixty? What
a minute's going on here?
Speaker 7 (01:43):
Mate?
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Well, I don't think I can remember the All Blacks
ever being too sixty since spending started on thab in
any Test match ever, So I'm not quite sure what's
going on. I guess it's always about Ireland in Ireland
and the fact that they've had a great track record
and of the six Nations champions is at the biggest
match of the season. Look, if I played the political
down the middle line, I'd say each match you take
(02:05):
one week of the time. The fact that you beat
England last week and the All Blacks have got France
next week. Yeah, it's probably the biggest one this week.
I always said that if the All Blacks lose one
Test in the Northern Hemisphere tour, it can be sort
of a very acceptable outcome for them. I hope it's
not in an hour's time when the game kicks off
a ten past nine. But this will be a big
(02:27):
challenge for the All Blacks because we know that Irish
side is good. They don't get ranked number one in
the world for nothing. They've got fifteen out of the
twenty three that played in that quarter final in the
World Cup last year in their lineup today. The All
Blacks have to get their discipline better. They had seven
yellow cards in the last seven Test matches and in
comparison the oppositions had three and Caleb Clark said two
(02:49):
of them and on Leonard Brown's had two of them.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
I hope for doing a fast he said two of them.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
It's just an area of the game that the All
Blacks really need to tidy up.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
It is Phil giffored the Iris have been dragging their
zombie about by the ankles since the quarter final last year.
I think it'll only they'll manage to shake that thing.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
Well, maybe they will. I mean, look, first of all,
can I say I actually do think it is I'll
go rogue on this, Paul, I'm sorry, I direct I'll
just say that I think it is definitely the biggest
game of the year. If the All Blacks can beat
Ireland this morning, then that is a fantastic performance.
Speaker 7 (03:26):
And on the other side.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
Of the cold I'm going to go a little bit
pollanneriush on this because I thought there were signs against
England at last that in the second half there was
a confidence in that All Black team, because it took
a hell of a lot of confidence for them when
you're five points down and there's only a few minutes
to go, and you've got the whole of the white
clad spectators of Twicken them singing swing Low, sweet Chariot
(03:48):
with a lot of glee to then put together an
impeccable try without a single hint of many eras in
it for Mark t Lear and then of course Damien
McKenzie sensation I'll kick from the sideline. But more impressive
to me actually than even that wonderful kick was the
try because it just spoke at last, it's all back,
are truly believing in themselves.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
I spoke to a lot of remains earlier in the week,
mister Alison. Then he said, the signs are all there.
Things are picking there, lifting that's all starting to fall
into place, like he might have been a bit maybe.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I think that's right too.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
I think there is encouraging signs that the All Black's
actually progressing. But they just need to get things right
under pressure. Sometimes they let that fifty to fifty pass
go and they don't need to.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
They've got that intercept try against.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Them after halftime, which was a bit of a backbreaker
for them, but they came back and they showed a
lot of resilience and a lot of patients in that
last twenty minutes, which has been there at killings heel
in matches before that, particularly in the South African series
where they lost those two matches in the Republic in
the last twenty minutes because of discipline and just not
able to score points and it wasn't That's been one
of the characteristical or one of their characteristics this year
(04:57):
that they really just need to work on.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
They did it last week.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
There are encouraging signs, and that's why I come back
to my earlier comment. I'm really surprised to see them
paying two sixty the old or two forty. I think
it is now this morning on the tab which is
long odds for the All Blacks.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Phil Tony Johnson. I spoke with him about the game.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I spoke him about Ethan de Groot and the lack
of firm explanation around the fact he was dropped first
and then he wasn't reselected again. Now he was like,
this is a mistake, we need to know. I don't
think they've handled that well. The night before I had Lurie
Mains on Larry Goes, that's how it should be. He's
running a tight chip. Scott Robertson, no one knows. It's
(05:34):
none of your business.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Get on, where do you say?
Speaker 6 (05:40):
I actually get on really well with Sorry but Laurie.
As we all know, I think the three of us
fully very old school. Laurie doesn't believe that the pesty
media you need to know anything about what Goes.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
I don't believe and fair paid him.
Speaker 6 (05:53):
But look, I think thankfully there hasn't been a huge
amount that I'm aware of a speculation about what he
highness crime he might have committed that God dropped the
first place, because for this test they say it's been
dropped because of a lack of form, which is a
bit strange, saying that he didn't.
Speaker 5 (06:12):
Play well, that's terrible for him. He didn't play it,
that's perfect.
Speaker 6 (06:16):
Hey, the way he sat in that Grandstein sat down
on his butt, didn't do a damn thing to help
the team. So, you know, but it is, it looks
it's always it's always a difficult call to know. I
think when you when you're the all Blacks, whether you
should put your dirty laundry out. If if, in fact
it is that the original thing was something as simple
(06:37):
as he was he turned up late for a training session,
then then I am inclined to think if it had
been my choice, if I'd been the pr advisor to
raise the Robertson, I would have said, tell him what happened, mate,
and just just get it, you know, because that once
you've said, that's that, that's it.
Speaker 7 (06:50):
It's in the rearview mirror, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (06:53):
Do we have the right to know?
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Paul Ellison, From my understanding, it's it wasn't anything too serious.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
He missed a team curfew and they've moved on.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
And I think this week it's just a chance of saying,
you guys got the job done last week. I think
we're all a little surprised that the group hasn't been
named in the twenty three somewhere. But he's saying, guys,
you did the work for us last week, go out
and do it again this week. And you know, I
take Phil's point. I mean, you can't say lack of
game time when he's ready and he stood down for
that one game. I mean that's that's a bit of
(07:24):
a ridiculous statement to make, I believe.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
But we'll see how they get on.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
He's still a key member of the All Black side
and I'm sure we'll see him and action before this
Lord and he mustphere to us finished probably next week
against France.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Well you read what you wanted to that it's a
form issue is because Tomighty Williams played really well, so
his form's great, so he didn't have to make way
for Ethan.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
To group me go anywhere with us.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
And I think on that we should just do what
they've done and eyes forget about it. Boys, we'll be
back more from you both at shortly. This is Allison
and Gifford on the All Star panel. It is twenty
three minutes to nine. He's getting close live coverage Ireland
All Blacks kick off ten past nine here and on
(08:05):
god Sport as a news talks eb.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Paul Sports Breakfast All Star Panel.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Indeed it is at a twenty to nine are all
staff panel is Paul Allison and of Phil Gifford. Phil
to you Graham Low, Sir Graham Low fronting the Southern
Orcards bid. There are three bids out there and no
one seems to want to talk to them from the
ARL or the NRL. I don't like the way this
is smelling.
Speaker 7 (08:35):
No me neither does.
Speaker 6 (08:36):
And look it would appear that Graham Low and the
people of business people in Bold with them. They apparently
have a station I think something like sixty million dollars
to set up, and they've got they've got great plans
for training centers in near christ Church and so on.
The trick to this is is the NRL, to me
is one of the ultimate oker outfits and they could
(08:59):
kill less mate. As they say in the classics over
there about whether kiwis are involved in the NRL or not.
And it's almost a miracle that the Warriors got their
way back in nineteen ninety five.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
I made that point earlier this week.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
It is the National Rugby League, whose national rugby League,
the Australian's National League. Why I think they suffer us
as it is. And that's about it, right, Paul.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
It is I love to Phil's Australian accent. You won't
have another credit that, Philip.
Speaker 7 (09:30):
Easy for me, mate.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Look, they've already rejected they've already rejected about eight other
expansion models already the NRL, including the Western Beers from Perth,
one from Fiji, one from Central Queensland too, from southeast
to Queensland is talk about one of the first teams
going into this expanded twenty team competition at some stages PMNG.
(09:54):
But it looks like on the face value and I
take what Phil says, and I understand that, you know,
we're always at the back end of the cow when
it comes to the NRL from Australia getting support. But
it looks like they've actually got a high powered group
of people together. They've got funding together, they've got some
really serious plans together, and they've also got some fantastic
support from the christ Church crowd that you know is
(10:16):
a rugby league center. There's not that many of them
in New Zealand, Auckland as Canterbury is and West Coasters
to some degree. But it looks like they've got all
the boxes ticked that they need to be seriously considered.
But the fact that the NRL have already rejected eight
expanded models or proposals that have come to them, including
a couple from Canterbury in the past, you would have
to say they've got some head wins. But I actually
(10:38):
quite like what they're trying to do, and on paper
it looks like quite a strong.
Speaker 5 (10:42):
Bidly love it.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
But if you're applying for a job and you send
to cev In because they just sent their press release
and they won't talk to you or accept your interview,
you're thinking games aren't right.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
I just I hope to be.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Proven wrong, and I'm sure you guys do as well,
because we'd love to see the stadium in christ Church
fields perfect.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
It's absolutely perfect for them.
Speaker 6 (11:06):
Yeah, but Darcy, I've got to say, mate, you're talking
about bets of two dollars sixty the tab. I'd say
this is more like a five dollars sixty the tab
against the team being in christ Jute, which is really
really sad for the fans and christ Chute because everything. Yeah,
they they've got all their ducks in the row, but
there've been a couple of other bids that look pretty
well organized as well, and they couldn't even be bugging
(11:29):
to talk to them.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Yeah, hey, we're almost running out of time. Just a
very quick word from the both of you.
Speaker 5 (11:36):
You first, Phil, the FIA have Well if.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
One drivers is could you just treat us like adults
please and stop giving us quif because we swear.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
What do you make of there?
Speaker 7 (11:48):
Yeah, it's an intriguing sort of thing.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
I see the Mohammad what's his name, the head of
the head of the Autumn, Yeah, the guy with the
billions of dollars, and says that we don't want we
don't want the drivers sounding like rappers.
Speaker 7 (12:04):
So you can unticked that in all sorts of ways.
Speaker 6 (12:08):
I would seduce ARSI but quite frankly, I think in
twenty twenty four, the idea that people who are fans
of Formula one are going to be offended by the
odd drop of the swear word is ludicrous beyond all belief.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
It is.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
And you mentioned that when Mohammed ben Soman suggested they
shouldn't be wearing too much jewelry, Lewis Hamilton turned up
Paul Allison wearing the no Start five. I think five watchers,
a nose start af, a ton of Julia lay whatever.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Bro, We've gone two minutes, mate.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
What do you think around this when you heard it
that the Drivers Association they're pushing back.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
Yeah, I can understand then, pushing back because already've had
the staff and lur clerk that have been fined I
think ten thousand pounds each for their comments in Singapore
and Mexico at the press conference where the language probably
was a little bit strong, And I know that sounds
like a bit of an old fuddy duddy, but the
fact that you know, they were probably trying to attract
people to Formula one as a crowd. Feeling that some
(13:06):
of that language is offensive, it's probably a bit over
the top. And they are saying that the difference between
swearing and tended to insult others and more casual swearing
such as used to describe bad weather is there's quite
a bit of difference around that. Or bad cars, which
is what one of them said. Their car was fed
at one stage. This is what one of them said
at the press conference. So you sort of say, well, okay,
this is probably a bit of a storm and a teacup.
(13:27):
The media have got hold of it. But when they
start talking about look, you shouldn't be wearing jewelry and
no studs and what have you, you'd say, look, it's a
bit over the top of today's age in terms of
progressive thinking. So we'll see where this one plays out.
I don't think too much more will come of it,
to be fair.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Sell a clerk makes twenty five, no, thirty five million
dollars a year and we're finding ten thousand. I mean,
come on, does it really matter?
Speaker 7 (13:50):
And a couple of.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Times change, it's not even small change in the long pockets.
Speaker 5 (13:54):
Even down the back of the couch.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Really quickly filed prediction for today, what happens with the
All Blacks.
Speaker 7 (13:59):
Island All Blacks by five?
Speaker 5 (14:03):
It's like two by two. Look like that.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
All Black's on the up and up. And that is
it from our all star panel. Real joy to have
Paul Allison and Phil Giffort on the wireless
