Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk ZEDB All Sport Breakfast, All Star Panal.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
And they're All Star Penalty consists of Ross Bond, the
legendary One, Tony and Ross.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
How are you, mate, Darcy. Nice to speak to you,
my friend. Oh look, I'm outstanding. I'm sitting in the
office looking out over the harvest shivering. It's an absolute
shocker in the capitol. I'm just watching one of the
cruise boats coming, mate, and they're straggling to tie up
against the wolf. So the suddenly he's coming through. Good
luck planned cricket at Kilbernie Park today, my friend.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Right, hold on, so you can. You can't beat well
and on a good day, but on a bad day
you can punch it with an inch of its life
right as well.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Exactly you can, as you know.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
As you know, Ross Bond is the man the mic
when it comes to rugby. And I haven't spoken to.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
You for so long.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Griss great to have you back on again. And a
guy who probably sees far too much of me in
the office anyway. Digital sport editor for the new selling
The Herald and Petrol Ahead Alex Powell, Alex, good.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
Morning, morning mate. A day from me yesterday, but figure
just jump on here today and get my cravings in.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
That's good. I'll send you a signed photograph. Mike Tyson
Ross Bond slapped Jake Pauley wants to get hooked up
with old mate Dana White and his slapper thon. I
don't know what he's doing. What do you think about this?
Do you have any thoughts on this?
Speaker 4 (01:32):
What's nice?
Speaker 2 (01:33):
It's not a fight?
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Well? Know?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (01:37):
I don't know. I mean it's like, on a scale
of one to ten of interest for me, it's probably
about a minus point forty five. He's running out of money,
is he? I'm not sure what's going on with us?
And it's mine. He looks pretty cud. I mean, I
wouldn't want to meet him down a dark alley.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
I wouldn't want to meet him in a light yowoom.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I don't care exactly exactly. Yeah, I don't know. I
don't know. It's it's a ratings thing, surely well.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Netflix are putting it on so Motion for their platform,
I'm presuming. But Alex, when you look at it, it's
it's not really boxing because they've got fourteen ounce gloves.
It's eight rounds of only two minutes each. It's it's
a thing. I don't think it's really a fight. I mean,
I'll watch it because I can't help myself. I love
(02:24):
Mike Tyson from back in the day.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
But what exactly is this?
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I mean, you're exactly right there.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
What is it?
Speaker 4 (02:30):
It's entertainment more than a sport. You know, you're getting
these youtubbers and these social media personalities with huge followings.
You know, if Jake Paul wants to fight a real fighter,
he should do it. He shouldn't fight. You know, guys
who have been at UFC fighters and then they've got
to go and switch the boxing are now fighting Mike
Tyson twenty or thirty years too late. So if yeah,
I just don't even know what the point of this
(02:52):
stuff is. But the sad thing is people watch it.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Power slap. That's what I was looking for, That's what
he's trying to get involved in. In fact, you know what,
we'll just bury this rietya right now. I feel embarrassed
talking about it. Ross Bond. Let's go to Tim Southey,
how long has that guy been around for? How good
has he been And what a lovely way to end
his career book end action with the English.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah, fantastic. I mean I was just sort of looking
back last night at some of the coverage on the news,
on the news channels, and I remember Timmy coming in
as a nineteen year old when I was involved in
cricket and Wellington and he was always that I guess
he's such a cool guy off the field, but gee,
(03:35):
his performances and just his stick ability and his continuation
of what he does and his craft is just outstanding.
And you know, you get the people on the bandwagon
over the last couple of years saying time from to retire,
time from to retire, the other people that sort of
sit on the outside and don't quite get what's going
on on the inside of his Black Caps camp. And
(03:57):
he will be a huge hole to fill when he goes,
not just on the field but off the field. But gee,
the hours and hours of him trucking up into the
wind being a natural swing bowler made I think you
reckon if he was bowling against India last night, they
wouldn't have got five hundred and seventy six. So Kilburnie
number four or wherever they were playing. Yeah, just absolutely
(04:17):
immense and it has to be one of the legends
of our game when we look back on it.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Well, you look at the duo him in Lovely Trenty
Alex Powell and what a couple they were in their pomp,
untouchable in New Zealand cricket history. They've got to be
right at the top of the heap.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
None, Alex, absolutely as a pair. I think the thing
there with Bolton. Saudi has bolted all of his work
with Saudi, and Soudy's had to do a lot of
his especially in the last few years without Bolt and
still has the record he does. No, I completely agreed
everything Ross has said. This guy has been in this
team for close to half his life. You know that's
staggering for a bowler.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Well, it's very fashion one. Now look at James Anderson.
Everyone's doing it, Alex.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Oh, yeah, but he's there's something wrong with James Anderson.
He's got nothing else. Why is he still Why is
he putting himself in the ip auction? Your forty mate,
go for a walk?
Speaker 2 (05:08):
What do you reckon his chances of picking up another
five wicket bag and a half century in his last
game against England, high or not.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
I'd love him to crack a ton just to finally
get that off. But I think he's pretty close to
four hundred wickets as well, so I think it's about
what fifteen away, So I mean, I mean, fifteen wickets
and three jests might be a bit of an ask,
but got to be good to send to it.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Right, Well, let's get away from cricket, even though it
is on the verge of summer, because there's a bit
of rugby going on over the weekend. Ross Bomb the
side to play France. I'd say with Scott Robinson, what
he's done, he's been. He's been fairly safe right the
way through the year and I don't think that's changed.
He's made some pragmatic changes and that's what most of
(05:51):
them should expect.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Right mate. Funny, I was thinking about this this morning
and last night, and I've got some little notes written
down which I don't do very often, and I've got
safe written alongside this team selection as well. Yeah, and
I guess what he's done, he's taken the same. I
would have loved to have seen Peter Luckeye in that
loose forward mix one eyed I know or I would
(06:15):
have loved to see the player of the NPC if
you get a run, because imagine him against the French,
the standoff yelling at each other to do just bloody outstanding.
But yeah, I think the way he's reshuffled the loose
forwards is the safe option. Putty Arty back to seven,
so Titi, who's been outstanding of course, to eight and
(06:35):
fee now there just I guess for the physicality around
the French boys coming around the side, Cody Taylor back
in this up is probably needs a bit of a
break after playing one hundred and sixty minutes in the
last couple of weeks. But yeah, just safe, really safe,
And I think you're right das all the way through
his selections have been safe. Severus just comes back onto
(06:56):
that wing. I think this is going to be a
hell of a battle. This is one I think the
rugby followers around have been looking forward to for a
long long time. The French boys are lying in wait.
They won't be underdone like the Irish were last week,
and they won't stand and gesticulate to the crowd when
they've kicked the ball to the sideline.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
What well, I know the Irish were lying in wait too,
but they fell asleep when they were lying down. I
was like, what are you doing?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Alex.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Safe is good though, right in this first year for
Scott Robertson, he's setting himself a platform, a firm foundation
to go on. And he's anything wrong with being safe.
It's not like they're beatd players or anything.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
No.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
And I guess what we're doing is we're comparing the
first year of Scott Robertson to the last year of
Ian Foster, where he knew exactly what he wanted from
his players, he knew exactly who he had. This is
very much work in progress for Scott Robertson. He has
to know what he's got, isner who he's got, how
they'll work. In terms of safe, I mean the selection
of female to come into the loose words over luckye.
(07:58):
I understand on more than one level he's rewarding few.
He's been there all year. He had a luckeye. While
he will be a good we'll have a good all
Wax career, but throwing him into the deep end at
Star Defrance might be a bit too much too soon
for THO. He's not started a chest match. He was
very cautious with him in Japan as well. So I
think there will very clearly be a plan there because
(08:18):
that's just how Scott Robertson.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Is and I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold. I'm
looking forward to the rest of our conversation on the
All Star panel on the All Sport Breakfast, Ross Bond
Alex Powell. Shortly we'll talk about Brett Robinson's new role
and the hoarding of first five eighths by the Auckland
as how dead they This is News Talk ZBA a
(08:50):
forty six All Star panel. Alex Powell on the show
as well as Ross Bonder Alex Powell to you, we
go first, Brett Robinson, the Ossie Lucy. He's the new
boss of World Rugby and he's released this astonishing new
rugby finances are at crisis point. Really, I didn't see
that one coming. They really are in trouble, aren't they, Alex.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
I mean, yeah, what he's saying is the way he's
saying it, then absolutely, I'm quite excited by the appointment
of Brett Robinson. We tend to get this ideological split
between the North and the South in terms of how
rugby should be governed and more often than not, the
northern people are in these rolls of powers. And now
we've gone from the southern hemisphere. How good?
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Very good? Do you think maybe he'll be knocking on
the door of the Saudi Crown Prince.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (09:41):
I hope not.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
But that's just the way these thinks go, isn't it.
If we're having the World Cup and READD in a
few years, I wouldn't be surprised.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Would you, Ross Bond? Everyone else is going there. Why
wouldn't you just throw yours out of the toilet and
just go there and take the money. They've got EAPs
of it.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Well, clearly they have. Yeah. No, I'd be knocking on
that door too, Like you boys, I'm excited about this appointment.
I think this is fantastic for a particular game down
in this part of the world. But what I did
like about if you look at what else he sort
of stated, is about the playing of the game. And
I don't think it's any any surprise to anybody. If
(10:18):
you talk to anyone around the rugby traps and the
game is in trouble, you know it's it's sometimes it's
turgid to watch, it's awful to watch, his view on
senseless kicking. I mean, for me, it's more around, you know,
in commentary, I'm often sort of taking the p out
of scrum resets and the time it is to get going.
(10:41):
If we think back seven days ago, Nick Berry sort
of reverted back. I mean, I didn't know what thirty
seconds was for. It was awful. Lisbo did good old
Newsboat exactly pointed it out straight away. So look, anything
we can do to get the game flowing and back
to and yeah, I mean it's it's just going to
(11:05):
be a breath of fresh air. This guy is a
fantastic operator. He is a really intelligent individual. Loved the
way he's worked across the years. Was a pretty good
footy player in his own time. So, you know, God
bless Bill Beaumont. But I think this will be fantastic
for the game if he can get some of the
things rolling that he's already sort of putting out there.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
I don't think Bill Beaumont likes me. Asked him a
few questions for the Women's World Cup, honestly, and he
basically smiled and turned and walked off. It's well, what
am I supposed to ask questions?
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Like?
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Plainly not and Alex with they couldn't get the twenty
minute red card over the line because of course, apparently
they don't understand what it actually means in the Northern hemisphere,
so that I wanted it.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
Oh there you go. Then, how very northern hemisphere of
them to just kill it.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Still with you, mister Powell, and we'll go to our
last rugby story. All this talk around the Blues hoarding
three all black first fives, well they're kind of not really.
There's a first five, there's a second five, eighth, and
there's a fullback. They can just all play first five
if necessarily. Nothing wrong with that, is there?
Speaker 4 (12:09):
No? And like the Blues shouldn't be punished for having
three all blacks on their books. Parafetter and Plumber weren't
all blacks when they first signed for the Blues. They've
become all blacks of how they've played. So I don't
understand why everyone's saying, oh, he should he should go
over there because they need a ten, and he should
go over there because they need a ten. The Blues
are who the Blues are. They're the champions, And like,
(12:31):
if that's the way it's going to go, what's the
point And then they have been having a super rugby
system like we have just letting news on the rugby
decide where guys go.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Anyway, and ross I spoke with Andrew Hall, the CEO
of the Blues, and he said exactly that pretty much.
You just used some slightly more polite language. But our
paraphrase is like, well we built the scene where the
champions will do what we want tough.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yeah, I totally agree. I mean it's I mean, I
bet the irony won't be lost on the middle of
the South Island will when you think back, not that
long ago there was there was Mertons and Carter and
then there's sort of Colin Slade and then my longer
and you know the factory that was and we talked
about it, didn't we about the factory of First five
that's coming out of the Canterbury region. Yeah. Look, I
(13:16):
don't have an issue with it. It's you know, and
as Alex said, if you're going to get to a
situation where the ends are you going to place people around,
then the competition is dead. Of a dram said during
the week, you know, is there an issue? He said,
it's not happening. Just get on with it. So just
get on with it and then you're right. Parafeta plays
(13:37):
all over the place, Plums plays at ten, twelve or
wherever you want them to. You know, build your own squad.
That's what you pay the money for. Get on with it, fellas,
stop your moaning.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Okay, I gotta ask one more question now. Producer r
Andy wants me to ask you who's going to win
between Paul and Tyson, But I don't care. Tell me
what's going to happen between the All Blacks and France
Ross Bond, nice and quick? Which way is it going
to go?
Speaker 3 (14:01):
France by four?
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Alex Powell, I'm in a similar boat, France by not many.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
New Zealand by thirteen plus the Wrench relying on it.
Thanks guys, You guys have a wonderful weekend. To catch
you again. That next week you'll start paneled. Great to
have Ross Bond on board again. It's been a long
time since I've spaken an old fella.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
