New Zealand will resume on 86 for five —trailing by 194 runs— on the second day of the second cricket test against England in Wellington.

The visitors scored 280 - with Harry Brook belting 123.

Black Caps all-rounder Nathan Smith says their batters largely delivered with aplomb, including nightwatchman Will O'Rourke.

NZME Cricket Commentator Andrew Alderson joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the second day.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk sedb England.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yesterday managed to piece together two hundred and eighty runs
in New Zealand had them wabbling, not unlike the tested
christ Church early doors for reasonably quick wickets. They recovered
to to eighty and then in New Zealand eighty six
for five o'rock and Bundle are at the crease and

(00:34):
we're joined now by Andrew Alderson. He's well rested, he's
coffeed and cross hunted and read it a hit day
two running with the flames at his feet. Andrew, first, up,
look out the window. What's the weather looking like?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yes, I preempted the stars. I had a look out
the window.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
I'm so predictable. I'm sorry.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Lovely, lovely as your sky so far so speaking, A
fine day, A gentle northerly coming across the ground. That's
coming across the arrow of Arts, standing up towards Mount Victoria,
Cook et cetera, and down towards Cook straight. So a
fine day expected, but a bit of rain forecasts around tomorrow,

(01:14):
so in increasing showers across the day, so it'll be
a bit of a change for tomorrowment as for to day,
with a full patronage expected. The act that based to
reserve it should been outstanding dazed cricket. But yeah, awkwardly
placed for New Zealand. I think at eighty six for
five in reply to too eighty because New Zealand they
really did have that early advantage forty three for four

(01:37):
England before you had this tremendous fifth big At partnership
between Harry Brooke and Olli Pope one hundred and seventy four.
But Brooke the star of the show again his eight
Test century third against New Zealand one hundred and twenty three,
which included well, I guess the standout stroke was really
the one that disappeared from Nathan Smith down Cambridge Terrace.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It was a stroke and I love to watch it bounce. No,
I didn't hate the fact that the weather might end
up turning a wee bit odd. Doesn't really matter because
the game has so well advanced, like fifteen wickets gone already,
so I don't thin there's any stress with that. But
what we're going to look, I don't know how many
lessons were taken from what happened in christ Church and

(02:19):
reapplied similar what we've seen to what we saw in
that first test. So taking that into account, what do
Blundle and O'Rourke have to achieve, What do they need
to look at, what do they have to not repeat?
What path do they have to beat on their own?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
I think, first of all, I mean the tempart of
the game is as such with the single one seen
that you're going to get a result inside four days,
regardless of whether a day is lost or not. I
think that you said certainly improved on the fielding front.
I think there might have been one drop catcher. It
was a bit of a pretty cracker struggle that Glenn
Phillips might have dropped in the gully, but it was moving.

(02:57):
There was a court and bowl preps as well. But
the fielding was excellent, as was the bowling for the
large part. I really thought met Henry did a great job.
Two for forty three fifteen. Oh it's probably not going
to be you know, Smifth took four against albeit at
seven runs and over and well I wrote bold well
for three as well, but a rock at the crease
as a night watchman. Blundele has come in as well.

(03:19):
Really they've just got a I think they've got to
keep that positive intent up, which I don't think is
any doubt that the busy and adventurous Blundle will be
able to do. He's just sort of trying and get
himself back into some four I think of I think
it was the last thing months. He's averaging thirteen point
five to two before the Test. But he's got this
tremendous record against England fifty eight. He is averaging against

(03:40):
them leading into this game, So I think in that
regard they've just got to stick it out. You've got
Phillips to come, potentially Matt Henry, but I'm going to
get some way towards parody. But this English attack, they're
pretty unrelenty, pretty ruthless, and in the field, I think
he's only going to have a few task starts.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Just wind back to brookd and what he achieved and
was fantastic. But where did New Zealand get it wrong?
What didn't they do that they probably should have picked
up from the first time he tore us apart?

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Oh look, I don't think they did that much wrong. Actually,
I mean, I think Harry brook he's just an absolute
juggernaw Tour de fource and really his batting is just sublime.
We're really witnessing a player in his pump here. And
if you think about I think he averages one hundred
and three against New Zealand from six innings. But in
addition to that, his strike rate in bearing minus his

(04:33):
Test matches is one hundred and two. So he's going
to more than the run of ball across those six
innings to average that. And it's just he just has
an amazing eye. He's able to adapt. He spoke yesterday
about they were cramping him up through the league, someone
who's looking just to work the ball across his legs
and then whip it away, and he felt that he

(04:54):
was in cramps. I decided he was going to take
them on and dance down the wicket and have a go.
And I mean this when you think about the context
of the stars, because he's he's coming at twenty six
for three, it's soon forty three for four. Uh, there's
there's that's that's pressure. And yet somehow he's been able
to compartmentalize that and take it back to New Zealand
with that counterattack. And really, hats off to I don't

(05:16):
think New Zealand did that much wrong, even with their lengths,
et cetera. It was it was a hard ask against
a player. As I say, just in this pob.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Something Andrew Ortison that we've seen is this debate around
where Glenn Phillips should be batting. It turns out now
with the nature of the night watch and he's not
coming in till eight, it still seems like a terrible
waste even when he's at seven. When he's at six,
is what's happened helping them maybe change their mind. I

(05:47):
know that they're pretty rigid in what they do, the
New Zealand Cricket captain and the coach around the position
of the players. But from what we've seen, do you
think that maybe that Phillips might get a chance or
is this this done for the rest of the year.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
It's a really good point because the irasis Gary Stead
the other day about what you know, it was raised
as part of the stand up in christ They're adamant
they're going to stick with Phillips. You know at seven.
I know it's a night watching, but seven normally and
Blundle it's six, I'd be inclined to switch them around.
I mean, I think Phillips is such a talent and
you wouldn't not want to see that resource wasted. And

(06:24):
depending on form and form it takes to the moment,
I think that Phillips probably does have that over Blundle.
So therefore I just think you don't want to waste
the runs with Phillips, and you know whether he can
go on and get more because it's aggressive player and
can really start to pile them on with the one
further spot up the order that might help. So there's

(06:47):
no indication though that that we switched, at least for
this test series.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Now we want to see him not have to hold
the tail together but actually throw his hands a bit
and expand. But that is another story for another day.
It's seven fifteen. Back to the breakfast buffet. You go,
Andrew Ordison, Thanks very much, have a very very enjoy
all day.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Looking forward to it.
