Wellington Phoenix defender Isaac Hughes is refusing to let last week's own goal damper his spirits ahead of this afternoon's clash with Macarthur.

Hughes put the ball in his own net as the Phoenix slumped to a 2-1 defeat.

The 20-year-old from Warrington is focused on helping the Phoenix return to winning ways.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be eight seventeen. It's Talks in Football now. Isaac
Hughes as our guest. He plays in the defendive role
for the Wellington Phoenix. They take on MacArthur today. He
joins us. Now, Isaac, good morning morning mate. Oh a, yeah,
looking forward to what's going on? What this evening five
o'clock Phoenix up and running again. I suppose you're trying

(00:34):
to push to one side the disappointment of what happened
last week here.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, you know, mistakes happened. The part of football that's
about how you respond. I felt like I responded well
within the game last week, and now it's time to
rebound from that and help we get a win today.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
You kind of play though, You're not going to carry this,
are you, Because as you said, people make mistakes and
the loss wasn't just your own goal, it was you know,
a lot of factors. So you're not going to carry
that guilt and shame, are you, Isaac?

Speaker 3 (01:03):
No. I think we obviously all looked at the goal
and there was things a lot of people could have
done differently. There was things I could have done differently
to prevent the goal or take those learnings, but yeah,
mentally just move on from them.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
You've been playing well, have you started every game so
far this year? So it must be pretty happy with
your position and where you are sitting right now and
saying with Chief you the coach, you must be loving
it as well.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, really really grateful to play every minute so far.
I hope I can continue as long as I keep
impressing Chief.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
You've what signed for a couple of years straight out
of the academy. What's the what's the master playing? You're
going to want to carry on playing planning in the
A League to carry on with the Phoenix what You're
young and you want twenty years old?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, I signed just before last season and this is
my second year, but my first year playing you know regularly,
and I just want to, you know, impress as I
can as much as I can in the A League.
That's all I can do, and then see what happens
after that.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
You've got an English accent. I think you immigrated out
here when you were quite is here a thought you
might want to go back there and have a crack
at the Premier League at some stage, Isaac.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I mean, I'd obviously love to play in the UK.
I've got a lot of family over there, and a
lot of family who support clubs over there, so I'm
sure they're secretly wanted me to sign to some of them.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Who's your club of choice and not necessarily in the
Premier League, but right across because you don't how any
teams play over the if you got a favorite, someone
you follow.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Yeah, I'm a Man United fan ever since, ever since
I was growing up.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
How's that going for you right now?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Terrible, to be honest, it was a bad choice when
I was a kid. It's not It's not great to
the mental health.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
But this is the thing though, and people understand that
you choose a team, well, the team chooses you. You
stick with them, thick or thin. You have bad times,
you have good times, it doesn't matter. That's the nature
of being a football fan, especially in Britain. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Yeah, and you know, I can't complain as much as
I want, but my dad's an Everton fan, so you
know I could have a lot worth.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Christmas must be fun when you guys get to get it,
you know.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
If United, when I sort of don't really if united
to beat everything, I don't really go too hard on him,
you know, because he gets it quite tough from a
lot of people. But if everything, when I do copy
it quite hard.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
We're joined by Isaac Hughes says defender for one of
the Phoenix playing and MacArthur five o'clock the Soathternoon aside,
what happened with the result? What do you need to
carry on from that game last week? What do you
want to develop from that I personally and as a team,
and what do you want to leave behind the pretend
like it never happened.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I think the game, the context of the game is
a bit different, and we're at home. I think we
really need to be on the front foot and dominated
the ball. I think we've got a lot of exciting
players did the ball at their feet. I think we
need to be a bit more patient this week, and
I think we were a bit too direct last week.
I think this week, with our quality players on the ball,

(04:07):
like cost of Alarusis and to Day and not the
world has you know, we need to get the ball
to those players and get them facing forward, and they
can really cause teams problems.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
What about yourself, What do you contribute? What do you
need to do?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
I think just the same as I've been doing all season,
just sort of showing my quality on the ball from
goalkicks and build up moments, and then off the ball,
just me and Scott communicating and trying to get everyone
into positions so we can depend effectively.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
You say, communicating you a bit of a loudmouth at
the back Vid. Do you like to hear your voice
your back orders and everybody or is it not your
phone yet?

Speaker 3 (04:47):
To be honest, I like talking a lot, but I
don't even know if it's necessary to help my teammates
or if it just helps me stay focused, to be honest,
so the more I'm talking, the more focused I am.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Next time I interview a Phoenix player, I'm going to
ask them how much of a pain in the backside
you are, Isaac? Can I expect the truth of them
should be a good chat. Hey, go well, leave the
disappointment behind, carry on surge at Ford Phoenix taking on
MacArthur five o'clock in Wellington this afternoon. Catch it on
the telly. Better still, get down to the ground and

(05:19):
watch it. Isaac Hues, thanks for your time. You play well,
play hard, play.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Fair, perfect, cheers mate, Thank.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
You, Isaac one new favorite Phoenix plainer, how's that going
for you? Man? You then he had shot his old man.
Loving that.
