Seam bowling star Matt Henry doesn't believe the Black Caps have rested on their laurels following the historic 3-nil test series win in India.

New Zealand heads into the third test against England, starting in Hamilton today, desperate to bounce back from two thumping defeats in the opening matches.

Henry says the abrupt change in fortunes isn't due to a lack of will or effort.

Matt Henry catches up with D'Arcy Waldegrave for a full preview of the third test.

You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
The third and final Test of the year of the
home season England at New Zealand, and we're joined now
by Black Caps player mister Matt Henry. Good morning, Matt morning.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
How you done?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I trust to well allbeit a little glum, because this
is it. No more Test cricket domestically for the year.
The season's finished. You got sad face broke.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
Yeah, obviously Test cricket has been nice to be playing
a lot of Test cricket of late, so yeah, it's
it's a shame that it's done and dusted in this
last Test.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Plainly, you won't be sort of drive for this Test match, Matt.
You're and the rest of the crew a lot of
discussion in the shed. I'd think around lifting for this
because well, let's face, at those first two Tests against England,
they were underwhelming.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Oh it hurts, doesn't know, I think from this group
obviously coming back from India and having high hopes of
qualifying for the Test Championship and so.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, that guy's feeling it.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
At the same time, even for we've got a great
opportunity here to play a test match here in Cidon Park,
and we've had amazing support throughout this whole series, so.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
We're looking forward to another full house.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
What kind of energy is pouring out of Tim Southey
right now, Man, he'd be absolutely loving it, basking in
the attention. Surely, you know.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
It's lays quite operator, and I think it'll be a
week to reflect on what's been an incredible career. Has
been part of this for a long time now, about
half of his life, so I think to be able
to celebrate him and what he's been able to achieve,
but also he wears that hat with a lot of pride,
and I think it'll be a big week.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
What's the compartmentalizing process like for you guys, because you've
got to clear the decks, say, the memories of the
the last couple of test matches. Is that a simple
enough process to go through? Matt?

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Yeah, I think having England come here, we're under no
illusion that they're going to look to take the game
forward and attack us in areas and.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Try to throw us off our links or what that
may be.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
And so I think obviously that that speeds the game
up and you can't hang on too much of those
those two games because we'll be presented with a new
wicket and a new surface. So I think for us
understanding the last two games and just adapting to our
plans and fine churning some things so we can hopefully
get a few more things right and have a different result.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Bad but good for Devin Conway, right, doesn't get to play,
but he gets to be a daddy, so that's fantastic
news for him. Of course, Well, you were young as
to be sliding us straight into that role. How has
he been looking in the nets? Mate? Have you have
you been peppering?

Speaker 4 (02:55):
He's been doing great well in fine form and he
looks great with the band. More importantly, he said it's
an exciting time to become a dad for the first time,
so everyone's just absolutely thrilled for Devon and his You.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Haven't been giving him any family advice? Have you know
how to be your dad for the first born? Because
that is so annoying when you're a first time parent.
You just wish them the best, right, you keep your
mouth shut, haven't you mat.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Not at all?

Speaker 4 (03:19):
I think we're just trying to figure it out. So no,
I think it's just a nice time home in his family.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
About yourself, man, how are you going, jeezus? Exercise and
patience your career. Huh, you've been hanging around the side
bit part every now and then, but a very successful
one test cricket and finally it's your time to show.
And I'll tell you what, bro your bowling has been extraordinary.
You're really making the most of this year. You're picking
up the slack and you're flying. It's great to watch.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Oh, thank you.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Yeah, no, it has been probably a little bit of
my journey, but it's okay.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
I think for me as always.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
Just trying to focus on what I can what I
can do to move the team forward, and I suppose
move my own game foward too, So it's great to
have a bit more continuity and just really enjoy being
out there.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
You're seeing your pastman too, now, aren't man? How does
that suit with you?

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (04:08):
No, I mean obviously being involved in the script for
a long period now, that's great to obviously see the
evolution of the same attack. And we've obviously had some
world class performers over the last while with Tim and Trent,
and we've got the guys will O Rourke and Nathan
Smith as well as all these guys coming through as well,
so Ben Sears as well.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
So it's great to have good bowling stock.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
I'm interested in the transition between the wild success you
had in India and well the failure so far in
this Test match. He left so much on the park
up there, thought process around that maybe your tank was
empty and when you came back and played this Test
series in England you had nothing left. Do you think

(04:53):
that's a fair thing to say. Do you think that
success in India had some bearing on what's happened against England?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
No, I wouldn't have thought so.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
I think the nature of professional sport now is your
mo on pretty quickly, and that what happened in India
was very special and it was something that was pretty
incredibly a part of and it does take a lot
out of you. But by the time you come home
and get ready for what's a huge series for us
against England, we were fully ready to go for this

(05:23):
and it's something that obviously hasn't gone the way we
wanted to, but at the same time, like we've still
got another game here to keep growing as a group
and hopefully put it out a good performance to everyone
that's been supposed supporting and following us for a long
time now.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
It taught us about Gary stead last test mention in charge.
We think, I mean, he may well take the job
again come June. It's all about White bull now I'm in.
But throughout his career, what has he done to contribute
to the success of this black Caps team, especially the
test team talked to us about Gary.

Speaker 4 (05:57):
Yeah, I mean Gary's been amazing and be ugly, one
of our most successful coaches ever. And I think what
Gary brings is a lot of passion. This group means
a lot to him, and I think the way that
he goes about work, his work and I suppose to
support he has around the team. I think he obviously
he takes a lot in the media. I think being
a here coach is a pretty tough job. You get

(06:19):
a lot of critisism. But from this group, he's got
a lot of backing from the guys. And I said,
I'm not sure what's happening moving forward, but to be
able to have someone like Steady lead this team for
a long time now has been awesome and I think
he's got a lot of respect to the guys here
and we're looking forward to hopefully putting a good performance
in Hey.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Thanks man, always great to catch up and love you.
Hear those words on Gary Stead because it's never about him.
Bloke has zero ego.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Thanks for yours, no ego at all, great man, Thanks very.
