Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildergrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're going to get things running with one day International
cricket after the washout earlier in the week. Ah please,
not another one. Let's just pretend it's going to be sunny,
a savy divine. Now it joins us there, captain of
the world champion white Ferns. Get a Sophie, Get a Darcy.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
How are you well?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
I'm like you, hoping that Wellington weather actually starts behaving
after the wash out a couple of days back. Here
is hoping that there's actually some action today at the
base and fingers crossed, right, Sovie.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Oh absolutely. I think it's probably one of the most
frustrating things about cricket is when the weather doesn't play
ball and you're just there twiddling your thumbs waiting to
be able to get on. So fingers crossed, the Wellington
sunshine can can come out and we can get a
good crowd because we've had pretty good reception so far
off people wanting to turn up, which is awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Well, the cool thing here it's free today and it's
free on Monday, so I think that provided the weather
comes to the party, there'll be a pile of people
turning up. Great way to celebrate around Christmas, celebrate the
Dare I say it, the World T tweety champions in
town Sophet.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
It still sounds good, doesn't it.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Look, I think you's in a cricket have been fantastic
with it. I think for the first game unfortunately washed out,
but they hed close to four thousand tickets I guess
reserved for those people wanted to come along, So it
would be awesome to see that many people come out.
I think. Yeah, as you say, the momentum that we've
been able to create and I guess people just wanting
to be involved and engage with the white fans is
so cool to see. So it's just up to us

(01:44):
now and the weather gods to be able to get
out there and hopefully put on a show. Right.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
So you've got to really adjust. You've got to come
down off the cloud the pedestal of Championship T twenty
cricket and start working on your long version game, if
you will. In One Day Internationals up against the Australian
So I don't think you've beaten them and I don't
know how many games. So you've got to forget what
you've done, don't you refocus?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, you do. And to be fair, we had a
bit of a taste of that obviously straight after the
World Cup when we were in India, I think twenty
four hours later, so we sort of know what it's
like to have to readjust and as you say, come
back down to earth a little bit. But we're really
excited about this challenge. I think there's no bitter team
to take on than the Aussies. They're world champions in
the fifty over format. It's obviously really important process for us. Obviously,

(02:29):
the Rose Bowl I think you know we've spoken about
it within this group. It's like our bledders Low Cup,
so there's so much history that fuck a puppa behind it.
It's just so cool to see, you know, how badly
we want to win it back. You mentioned we haven't
had our hands on the troph and we haven't been
in the Aussies in quite a while, so we're certainly
gunning for them and hoping that we can put together
a complete performance in this format.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Okay, so the complete performance, where does that start? We
know it's about fielding, it's about batting and it's about
bowling anything else that you've got to really hit the
ground with.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
I think that's something that we've reflected on from the
t twenties in terms of what's worked well for us,
and we want to sort of, I guess transition that
through to the fifty over stuff. It's just you know,
you have to do it for longer periods of time.
So with us we speak a lot about partnerships. That's
a really important thing for us is you know, if
you can get a couple of big partnerships, that's going
to help you post a big total. I think we
speak about it with the ball. It's not just you

(03:20):
from one end. It's what you can do with your
partner down the other end and backing it up in
the field. And something that I think's been outstanding the
last couple of months that we've been building really hard
on is the energy and effort, and that's in every
facet of the game. Obviously in the field it's chasing
the ball down and it's hunting impacts, but it's also
running between the wickets. It's simple things running between the wickets,
it's hustling between overs, it's hopefully something that someone from

(03:43):
the outside can look and say, Yep, these girls are
absolutely flying here. They're putting everything into it. So that's
what we've been focusing on. It's very process, I guess
driven rather than outcomes. But we know that if we
do those things really well for long periods of time,
that we're going to have success.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well in Schiposophie Devine and joining the program, you've got
the old school, and I say that in the politest
possible way. With a lot of the the staples of
the side playing the next generation, the younger generation coming
through really important for them to taste success as well
and learn as much as they can. And anyone in
particular that you're looking forward to seeing over the next
couple of days, Oh look.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I think, yeah, the young guns have gone all right
little bit. I think Eden Carson has been outstanding and
she's certainly going to be a real driver for us
with the ball and informing a key partnership with Merely
obviously with her offspin. I think Asie Gays has been outstanding.
I think we've seen her grow in confidence behind the
stumps and I thought how she kept at the wheel
cup in tough conditions, you know, not just with the

(04:40):
heat but the actual wicket and lack of bounce. It's
you know, I've got big hopes for her and the
work that she's been putting in behind the scenes has
been outstanding. So they're two real key drivers for us
in terms of spoke about the energy and the effort.
They're the two that are really going to help lead that.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
And the threats out of the Australian camp. Who do
you look to and want to put a target on
their back figuratively of course.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Sophie, Oh of course. Oh look, I think you could
name any one of their squad. They've all got the
ability to take the game away from you. I think.
You know, you look at the young guns and you
look at phoebe Letchfield has been outstanding for them. She's
been at the top of the order and it's called
it a mountain of runs and you know, it's been
a real energizer bunny for them. But then you look
to I guess probably some of the more experienced players.

(05:25):
Elise Perry in this format has some ridiculous numbers and
stats behind her, and we know that she's really the
staple of that side and the batting order and what
she can do. Beth Mooney at Misscorch's teammate again misconsistency,
So look, they've got some real threats. Annabel Sutherland is
another one for me. I think she just keeps getting
better and better. So we know that they've got threats.

(05:47):
But I know it's pretty bloody cliche, but we know
if we focus on ourselves and do our job right,
you know we'll go a long way to being in
these Aussies.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
There's a reason a cliche is a cliche. Because it's
a cliche. You don't be afraid about saying that that's
the way things roll in this game. Hey, I hope
the weather comes to the party. Are looking forward to
the fixture and the second one coming up on Monday.
Go well and to the entire team from us here
at the All Sport Breakfast, Merry Christmas and happy Holidays.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
We can think that.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Thank you, Sophie Devine.
