Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast Podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk ZB All Sport Breakfast All Star Panel, and.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
On the All Star Panel we are joined by mister
Ross Bond and mister Phil Gifford. Ross A delight to
have you on. I trust your.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Well, I am indeed good to talk to you. Good morning,
So Merry Christmas everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, morning Ross, And it's very fitting that one of
our more regular guests on the panel, Phil Gifford, signals
off the end or signs off the end.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
Of twenty twenty four of us.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Right, let's get things underway. First up, because it's my
favorite thing, Ross, Liam Lawson, best sports story of the
year for me. Mate, Mate, maybe I'm a little too enthusiastic,
but how good's that signing?
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Mate, Look, I've got to be honest. I'm not a
fantastic f one follower. If you go, h okay, thanks, have
a good weekend. But first we sort of popped up
on the I've taken a little bit more interest. Yeah,
absolutely fantastic. Fascinating to see how this pans out from now,
because this is I guess where the real pressure starts,
(01:15):
and you know, It's not going to be an easy gig,
is it. I mean, I'll make this stuff and isn't
shy at cutting people. The pressure that's going to be
on him. But from what I've seen, mate, he is
such a level headed young man. This is going to
be fascinating to see him just if you're right. Fantastic
story heading into Christmas.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, we'll feel like he's lived under this microscope, under
this pressures. He started racing carts when he was knee
high to the you know, the grasshopper situation, so he
knows what it's like and he's been edged into it
with a couple of years in racing balls. But so
right Ross, it really does start now. Everything else doesn't
matter anymore. Pressure enormous in Formula One, the money, the eyeballs,
(01:59):
the size, it's just crazy.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah, I mean one of the things about Liam Lawson
dares and I entirely to me it is easily the
sports story of the year because it's just sort of
built and built and built and built. It's almost like
it was written by a Hollywood scriptwriter and Liam Lawson
for somebody that Again, I'm a bit like Ross. I'm
not a fanatic on eayone. I'm interested in it, but
(02:23):
not to the degree year I made. But Liam Lawson
has made me and my family and my darling wife
absolutely riveted by it because he presents as such a likable, grounded,
intelligent and at the same time tough as nails young
man that it's fantastic. And can I just quickly share
with you a story that I think is the best
(02:45):
story I've ever heard about a keywing in Formula one,
and I'm going talking about the late great Denny hol
nineteen sixty seven Formula one world champion. In the early
nineteen eighties, for reasons I can't quite remember, I was
editing a magazine in Auckland and Denny was in the
office a lot, and I actually got to na him
and chat with him. Anyway, when he first went to
the UK, he was under the wing of the great
(03:08):
Australian driver Jack Brabham and they were doing one of
Denny's first time that he was driving a car in
the UK. They were doing the qualifying at Brand's Hatch,
which apparently is in those days especially, it was very
very English and very much you had to do the
right thing, old chat. It was like Wimbledon on wheels anyway,
(03:31):
Denny Denny was actually leading the field. He had the
fastest lap and he came in and Jack Brevian came
to him and said, listen, mate, you're doing real well.
Because Jackson asie right. He said, you're done real well mate,
and keep it up. But I have had a request
from the British officials here, would you mind putting some
shoes on? I'm not driving barefoot.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
I don't think he get alo that now has a
great tale, Phil and we're moving on rosspond to the
next subject. Look idly and Wilson on the show yesterday
had David Nie from the show yesterday as well. I
was a peg in the proverbia. But Anika, out of
nowhere gets a world title fight. He's got two weeks
before he starts up with one of the scariest men
(04:12):
in the division.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Gip a tire. Yeah, unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
I mean it's but again, just a fantastic story when
you when you set up your career and you set
up your pathway and you always want to have a
crack at a world title and all of a sudden,
out of nowhere this has popped up. However, I guess
It's a little bit like wood End or Oxford playing
the Crusaders, isn't it. It's a little bit. It's a
little bit tough on him because I mean, he's surely
(04:41):
out of the pen into the fire here. Opatire is
just unbelievable. I guess the one thing behind David's I
guess the title fighters. He's just come out of an
eight week camp, so's he's in good nick but oh
my god, I mean, this is just going to be unbelievable.
I mean, you couldn't give me three million dollars again
in the ring with his nutcase. Yeah, and he just
(05:06):
sort of he just looks to me like something that
Hannibal Lector might come to dinner at his place.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
He possibly eats as young.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I suppose.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Feel what I looked for this one here is that
you look at Mikaylovitch and he had that title shot,
but he was completely outclassed. And you're worried that Nika
is still early doors. It might be, but I've talked
to him yesterday. He's spent around about forty rounds in
the ring, sparring with Jay previously. They know each other,
so there might be something in that.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
You would certainly hope so wouldn't he because because I
totally agree it's ross Opeti is just one of those
terrifying people. And yeah, if he had dinner with Hannibal Elector,
I think he would eat Hannibal Elector. But I've got
to say that if you're familiar with the guy and
he sparred with him that much, which I didn't realize
until you talk to him yesterday, does if he's that
(05:57):
familiar with him, then fingers crossed, that means that there
will be no you know, no incredible stage right when
David Nika actually gets in the ring and if you
can win it, my god, what an achievement.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, and I suppose the opposite of that, does he
knows what Jai can bring to the ring, but Jai
also knows what David can bring to the ring. So
it might be seen as an advantage, but it cuts
both ways. January the eighth, so looking forward to that,
you know, guys, and.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
We're going to just.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Tie up for a second then back shortly. But in
the space of seven weeks there are three key we
fighters fighting for a world title, Joseph Parker, David Nieka
and me and Motzi Think Crazy seven weeks for New
Zealand Boxing. More from the Boys coming up and next
as we carry on with the All Star Panel, Ross
Bond of Phil Gifford.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
All Sports Breakfast, All Star Pedal.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Caught at the nine All Star Panel, Ross Bond and
Phil Gifford, Phil Helberg's finally we've got the finalists. I
don't know is anything non Olympic going to win this
year or what?
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Well? Look, first of all, I love the Halburg Awards
and it's because one of the things about them is
they have such a it's such an incredible cause, and
Sir Murray Halberg was such a magnificent man. And the whole,
the whole thing about the Halburgs is fantastics. That the
aim of them, the real aim of them, the actual selections.
I love the fact that people get hot under the
(07:30):
collar about it because, let's to phase it, let's face it,
it's actually almost insane. How the hell do you judge?
What do you mean almost yeah, how do you judge?
How do you judge a jockey against a high jumper
against a football playlot? Chris Wood. So the actual event
itself is a wonderful talking thing, and the more controversy,
(07:54):
there can be the better because as long as the
Halburgs are being talked about, as long as people are
interested in them, long as people get hot under the
collar collar about them. And I've once seen I won't
name names, DARSP. I had been at a hell big
awards where I saw but gold medalers storm out because
this particular athlete coach didn't win Coach of the Year.
(08:15):
So that's seriously some of the participants.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
I think, I know how you're talking about, but I
won't say it. You don't inflict me your text just
so I know that that'd be great. Well, I think
it's insane. I the charity amazing, but the whole concept
of comparable awards for different sports is mad. Like I'm
in finishing year twenty three of this now, and I
think on the same tip Ross Bond right from the
(08:39):
get go, I don't get it, which is probably why
I've never been invited Ross.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
Yeah, well, probably true.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
I think the other thing for me, like Phil, I mean,
I think it's fantastic, and it's always I guess it's
always sparked the old water cooler conversations or the lift conversations,
hasn't it and the people the passion that New Zealanders show.
But the other thing for me across this is when
you look through the nominations, My god, how do we
bat about our weight in world sport? This is just unbelievable.
(09:11):
Like half of these names when you go through and
I was just reading through, you know, and you go
through the woman's nominations and Dame Lisa Carrington she might
be pretty close to getting it, I guess. But then
you look through any go Lydia Coe, Amerelya Kur, Sarah
Her and Briany both. I mean, just unbelievable, and you
go through the whole all of the categories and it's
and it's I guess it's a little sort of poke
(09:32):
in the backside. It's going, oh I remember that now,
and you're look back like Team of the Year, Sportsman
of the Year.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Bloody hell.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
I mean, yeah, God lack being a judge on all
of this, and there will be conversations and feel's right.
I've been at Wellington Sports Awards and other things where
the supposed short short odds person stormed out the root.
I've seen a couple of willing to do that too.
I won't name any names either.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Yeah, but it is.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
I mean it's it's controversial, it's cool. I reckon, they're fantastic.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
And that's all coming to a head. I think it's
early February, isn't it. That award semon is on? But
we know now, Oh my.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
God, I've done some research.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Oh wow, that's what we keep getting on. Ross Bond.
You're so well prent, even though you don't like motor
sport feel at the Santana claus Chalky flatline. There's so
many nicknames for him that a new captain of the
white ball game makes perfect sense to me. Remarkable character
(10:35):
right at the right time, I think, to captain this side.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
Yeah me too, mate, I mean I'm a look, I've
never actually met the guy. I presume you've interviewed him,
but Mitchell Satner to me, one of the things I
love about watching him play cricket is that when he's batting,
it looks like Harry Potter at the crease with those
little glasses on. But bye God for a very pleasant,
well spoken man. He's a bit like the Lamb Laws something. Mate.
(11:01):
He strokes me that he's as tough as nails and
tents the competitive and in mine, brilliant choice to be
the white Bull captain.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Yeah, and Rossi's one of his nicknames flat lines because
he's completely emotionless. He dropped one of his arms off
like Monty Pythe and you just look at him say
that's a flesh woe.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
It doesn't react.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
And what I've liked about what he's done is he's
developed his career and now he's almost in that Vittory
like role with what he can do with the bat
at the end of the innings. And we've seen it
in test cricket, we've seen it in white ball cricket.
So he covers all aspects of what's required.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
Great great appointment.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Yeah, fantastic appointment. Unlike Phil I have had the pleasure
of meeting much in a previous life at Cricket Wellington
when he was coming into the scene. Fantastic guy, I mean,
just a real likable character, doesn't get ruffled. I think
the other thing that's behind this appointment and it's a
fantastic appointment, and I think he'll do a fantastic job
(11:56):
is he's learned his captaincy craft in the white ball
game of one of the best in the world. And
I'm talking about Stephen Paul Fleming at the chair things
where flem We know his record five titles with the
Chenni Super Kings. There was a guy called ms Doni
in that side as well. So if you're going to
be a fledgling captain and you're sitting in a changing
room with those two outstanding humans, you're going to learn
(12:19):
your trade pretty well. And I think just as Phil said,
you know, ordas as you said, he's one of those
guys if you chopped his arm off, he'll just remain flatline,
and that for a captain is outstanding to see and look,
I think he's going to do a really cool job.
The other thing that will come into this white the
white ball game with the black Caps is a number
of young players that are going to come into this
(12:39):
side over the next couple of years, and he will
be outstanding rolling those guys through because he's been there himself.
So I think it's a fantastic appointment and I can't
wait to see how he goes.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
And he's one of the driest buggers you'll meet. He's
one of my favorite interviews. I really love talking to
mention you're not quite sure what you're going to get
and he plays the game. He knows who he's talking to,
and he knows how to tailor his response to whatever
baboons down into the fine which is I'm on referring
to myself, but great to have him around on that
(13:12):
And on that note, we're out. We're running out of time,
and Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you. Feel
given into you, Ross Bond. It's been wonderful having you
as part of the All Sport Breakfast throughout twenty twenty four.
You are coming back.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Right well hopefully dark. Merry Christmas. If you're having a break,
you have a lovely break. And to everybody listening, I
must say, if you're a sports fan, you're my kind
of person. So have a lovely merry Christmas.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
All right, I'll finish it off for all of you.
Feel good as gold.
