Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Dancy
Waldegrave from News Talks EDB, the Board Breakfast on your
homeless Sports News.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Talks EDB for b B. Great to have you company
this morning.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Well, it's an eye to the future with the black
Caps squad counting down to these three twenty twenties against
Sri Lanka over the next week or so. The series
begins at Bay Oval this evening, with another game there
on Monday. Things will then head to Nelson on January second.
Mitchell Santner is captaining the white ball team in this series.
The squad features international newcomers, a whole load of them.

(00:42):
Nathan Smith, Bevan Jacobs, Zach Folks, Mitch Hay and Tim
Robinson among this squad, but it has been confirmed by
the camp yesterday neither Jacobs or Smith will play in
tonight's opener though. Well, let's head into the camp now.
Zach Folks is a baseballer from Canterbury who debuted for
the black Caps and white Ball cricket during the year.

(01:02):
Morning to your Zach, is it exciting to get into
this home white ball series kickstarting at a few hours time.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
It's going to be awesome. It's going to be a
great day of the day and hopefully the weather puts
it on and people fill the banks at the day over.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
What's a focus for you with this series? You're a
part of the T twent ties as part of the
Sri Lankan tallis, So what do you want to get
out of these few games ahead?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
I think just trying to learn from from the more
experienced guys in the team, like and Jacob Duffy, even
like Sir Darrell and stuff. Just trying to learn as
much as possible. And yeah, old and good suits the future.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Really, it's a nice making that step up alongside Matt Henry,
who you of course has spent a bit of time
with at Canterbury, but also you've kind of filled his
shoes at times when he stepped up for international duties
and seasons gone by.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool. Here's a few cannery boys
in here. Now we've got Mitchie as well made his
debut and Sri Lanka and part of the series as well,
and obviously will ow' rourke has burst on the scene
as well, which is cool.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
How nice has it been getting that opportunity to head
away to the subcontinent, making your international debut during the year.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
You know what that kind of mean for your career. Yeah,
it was awesome.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
It's definitely very, very different to playing cricket over here,
but yeah, it's cool to challenge myself and those sort
of environments and yeah, fingers crossed, the next couple of
times they go there, I'll be better for it, I guess.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
And that was obviously.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
You know, there's a long term sort of changing of
the guards happenings that are the likes of that, the
tim Southey's and Trent Bolts and that are winding down
from their careers, and I guess that is opening up,
you know, quite a few spots for quicks like yourself.
What are you kind of trying to bring is the
point of difference to some of the options that the
selectors have for here.

Speaker 4 (02:48):
I'm just trying to be quite trying to stick to
my my sort of game, my sort of skills, and
try to be myself. Really. Yeah, it's helped me and
from now so hopefully hopefully in this international cricket it
will work. Fingers crossed. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Absolutely.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
In terms of the bay Oval, I'm sure you played
their fair bit as a domestic cricketer and Canterbury Colors.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, how do you usually go on the on the
deck there?

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Yeah they Yeah, I haven't had too much success there
obviously into a very strong team. Yeah, I've yeah, probably
played there three times and I don't think I've won
there yet, so fingers COSSI can change it.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
And playing Sri Lanka, you had a couple of games
against both od I n T twenty only a short
time ago.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
What do you kind of what do you learn from
them over there firstly?

Speaker 3 (03:43):
And what kind of threat do you expect them to
bring down here to the zeeling.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Yeah, it was pretty pretty cool watching them play at
Sri Lanka, just how they go about it with their
change ups and even their batting and stuff. That's pretty
pretty cool seeing what they do can do in their
own conditions. It'll be a little bit different over here. Obviously,
conditions probably favor us a little bit more. But yeah,
they're a quality team and I'm sure it would be
up to the challenge put on a show for the people.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Hearing that long now, Yeah, great.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Wanted to ask about you know, the batting side of
your game, Zach. Obviously you know where we see all
your wickets, your take.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
But I know that you know.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
You're rated quite highly as a reliable sort of batter
further down the order. How much do you like to
sort of make sure that that is a key part
of your game when when I guess you know you
are trying to get selected in teams for series like
this one.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, it's definitely definitely something that I work at quite
a lot. Yeah, hopefully it gives me a bit of
a point of difference from the straight bowlers. Yeah, and
obviously T twenty that power and death phase is pretty
pretty important, so hopefully, yeah, hopefully I can have a
few over the road in the next few games and

(04:52):
go from there.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Really nice and red Bull formula. It seems pretty good.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Do I see you had that the planket shielded out
soon after getting back from from the subcontinent against the
Targo Rung.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
You're a pretty pretty good A few sessions there with the.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Ball, yeah, yeah, first settings was good fun with the ball,
and then second things, I think we were in the
field maybe one hundred and eighty overs, so that wasn't
as fun, but it's good to come away with a one.
It rang you were, yeah, great, a great place to play.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, it looks it looks amazing.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
And what did you get out of heading overseas to
Europe earlier in the air to the T twenty blast.
Has that sort of been important and assisted your development
getting up to this this international level.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
Yeah, definitely. Just chatting to like different players and seeing
how they sort of go about their cricket, just trying
to bring as much knowledge from them. Yeah, I'm just
trying to try to learn as much as possible.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Really, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Nice, And how do you manage it this time of
year because cricket's always on around this time. You know,
everyone that's not in professional sport likes to indulge around Christmas.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
You know, food and drink and all are on offer.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
How do you make sure you're not getting too carried
away and in prime condition once the summer sort of
rolls around at this point.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Now Christmas Christmas Day is pretty quiet in the folks family,
which was good. And then shut off on a flight
yesterday and then train today and then absolutely whereing to go.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Nice one, Zach, Hey were great to chat mate and
I'm looking forward to seeing you being a big part
of this series over the next few games.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
So I appreciate your time and all the best. Getting
it underway awesome, Thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Zach Folks with us here on the All Sport Breakfast
black Caps fast bowler. He's got a few as the
national's under his belt from this year, few T twenties
and a solitary one day from the Subcontinent, so his
first chance to wear Black Caps colors on home soil.
Couple of players like him only playing the T twenties
in the series, that's Tim Robinson, Bevan Jacobs and Zach Folks.

(06:50):
But we have heard that Bevan won't be playing in
this game today and then will young, Will O'Rourke and
Tom Latham will be only playing the one days when
they get underway on January fifth at the base in reserve.
So a few players that have swapping in and out
for this series for Mitchell Satna captaining the team, Michael
Bracewell part of it, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Mitch Hay,

(07:13):
Matt Henry, Darryll Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Ruchan of Indra and
Nathan Smith all part of things through the series. So yeah,
be interesting to see how it plays out. Seven o'clock
gets underway tonight first Ball. You can catch live commentary
over on the alternative commentary collective The ACC on iHeartRadio.
Catch all your live cricket action courtesy of the ACC

(07:36):
