Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News talks'b after.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I joined now by a New Zealand a Herald's scribe,
but league expert, okay, league tragic Michael Burgess on the
air with us Mikey, you waited a long time to
get a bit of an RL and you got some
last night twelve all. Did that really reflect the quality
of the game and the two sides?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Do you believe?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Hmmm, good question to ask, good morning. Look, it was.
It was what you'd expect from a first trial.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
It was.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
There was nothing amazing, some good parts, some bad parts.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Both things were rusty.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
I wouldn't say there was tremendous quality throughout the match.
I think the Warriors got some things they wanted. I
don't think, and your webster will be overly happy. So ye,
a bit of a fruit salad of a performance. Really,
i'd give it probably from a warrior's point of view,
give it probably a I don't know, probably a B minus.
But I never like to read too much into Charles
(01:10):
dar So. I think, as you we've seen over the years,
there's been some big wins that turn into not much
when you come to the season and there's been the opposite,
so I thought it was okay that was.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Tagging me in the back of the nogg and watching it.
It's only a pre season. It really doesn't matter. The
players know, the coaches know. There might be one hundred
grand on the line towards the end, but it doesn't
mean anything.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
All.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
I look to a knees and like people listen to
me for the last couple of decades ago, we're tired
of this, but it's true. I just don't want anyone
getting broken in preseason. And sure as eggs are couple cramped.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Yeah, that's that's the thing, mate, especially with especially rugby league.
Is you just you're just so nervous watching these these
kind of games. And the fact that you know Dylan
Watinasnik has picked up a wrist injury is not a
good sign because he's had he had a few injuries
last season. And Las Vegas just around the corner, you know,
(02:04):
so you do wonder they're a bit they're a bit
slim in the wing department at the moment, so that
that wasn't a good sign.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
And that's not what you want to see. It's not.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
But yeah, no, sorry, but what we want we want
to see is some performances that look like they've got
something to work on and maybe shine. And that I
suppose you look no further than done at Walker for
a start, who I thought played particularly wall well and
Metcalf in that half position. That guy has been destroyed
by injury. He is hoping that this year he can
(02:37):
actually stay on the park because he's he's got something
isn't here.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, that was too I was going to highlight to us.
I mean that last night was that.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
But last night was the first game of the post
John Johnson Eira, wasn't it. And that's what we're looking at.
Who's going to be the number seven? And I liked
what I saw from Metcalf. I liked his kicking game.
I liked his organizing. He's got some spark early days,
of course, but I think he he put down a
good market that hey, I want to be that guy.
I want to be that guy running the team. And
(03:06):
it was quite a bit to like about what he did.
Dylan Walker the same Dylan Walker. It felt like, I
don't know, we just got used to him to the
Warriors often having a pretty flat first twenty minutes and
he comes on and gets things going.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
He's just so important, so he was great.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
And the other stand up for me I thought of
the new arrivals was Aaron Clark.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
I thought he was excellent.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
He showed why he's actually going to be a really
really important sign and I love his power up the middle.
He did some clever things as well, So I thought
those three of a mixed bunch, those three were pretty good.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
What did you make?
Speaker 2 (03:43):
A Jet Cleary finally running out? I know I have
and his family are pretty stoked. He's such a young
looking man, isn't he? That look won't last long in
the NRL. Have we we beaten to shreds in a
couple of years. But did he bring anything, do you
believe to the exchange?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
I mean he looks like the kind of guy that
could still, you know, sneak in for the student or
the kids tickets of the movies Darcy, like we used
to do back in the day.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Bitherways manly and old. How did.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
It came on with about fifteen minutes ago? And it
was it was a nice occasion. He's still he's still
very young. I mean he looks like a very young
Nathan Claire, which is exciting, but you know, I don't
think we'll see him in the NRL this year because
they've got four or five other halves for a start.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
But it was nice for him. It'd be nice and
nice memory.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
He didn't get to do too much, but he had
he'd had a couple of touches. The youngster I was
more impressed was and thought, hey, this guy's got something
was Sam Healey, the son of mitche Ley, the former
Cronella player. Actually at hooker, I thought he looked he
looked quite sharp. Actually he had about thirty forty minutes
(04:57):
on the field and he was one of those guys
you think, okay, well he's got something there.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
So certainly Andrew Webs have got to look.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
At a lot of his young players, which the point
of a trial really as well.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
And to start with it. And I think maybe this
might put more in favor to the Sharkies. They didn't
start with their best lineup, did they, whereas the Warres did,
so they were maybe exposing more players to a harder
version early in the piece. So I'd say even though
it was twelve, all the Sharks by those to take
that game.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Well that's the point mate, was that the Oh the Cirks,
I think they were probably missing eight or nine of
the top seventeen, maybe ten even They had some players,
but not a lot of the key ones, whereas the
Warriors started with a lineup that won't be too.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Far away from what we're seeing round one.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
So you would have expected the Warriors to win the match,
but they couldn't really. They liked a bit of polished.
They couldn't really make the most of their chances. Should
have been eighteen six ahead or something couldn't get ahead
and then Karnulla came back.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
At the end.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Of course, Cronell had a lot more to play for
their home. The young guys are so excited for a
lot of them. Was the biggest match to play all seasons,
so you keep that in context. But yeah, given it
was a week in the Sharks team. That's another thing
that Webster Wiley won't be too too worried about things.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
He'll be like, we should have we should have really
put them away.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Michael Burgess, I'd like to now talk about the referee
and the play the ball, but I can't be bothered,
so I won't thank you very much for your time.
Looking forward, to our continued chats throughout twenty twenty five.
Have a cracking week in.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
My friend, thanks mate. Yeah, that will be a topic,
but let's let's leave it for now. We're still in February.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Thank you, Michael Burgess. There out of the New Zealand.
Here all coming up a quarter past eight.
