It's a huge day for the Thoroughbred Racing industry.

Today is a history making day for Thoroughbred Racing in New Zealand.

Auckland Thoroughbred Racing CEO Paul Wilcox tells D'Arcy Waldegrave today's racing is the richest sporting event in New Zealand, with $9 million in stakes on offer.

This is going to benefit the industry as a whole, which I think is great because people have seen through with their glasses, their parochialism for their own clubs, and they understand how good it is for the industry," he said.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Date nineteen All Sport Breakfast. On that news talks, there
be of a Saturday morning right, let's pivot off now
to the wonderment of the Thoroughbred Racing industry.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
SA.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Good morning now to the Aukland thoroughbir Racing CEO, mister
Paul Wilcox.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Good morning, Good morning Darcy, and good morning to your
listeners as well.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Massive day for you and the thoroughbred racing industry. That
this is huge, I suppose before I asked more questions.
What are we celebrating? What is this big event that's
coming out this afternoon?

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Probably the most simple things. It's history making day for
New Zealand racing. It's the richest sporting event, not only
for racing but in New Zealand, sporting event in New
Zealand with over nine million dollars in stakes on offer today,
and yeah, it's something we've been looking forward to for

(01:24):
a while. And yeah, we're extremely excited.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Darcy, how long has been in the pipeline for books.
Can't just whisk us up in the space of a month,
can you.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Paul, No, No, dear right and fair to say that
it has happened, reising me quickly. I remember first conversation
with Cameron George, whom I'm sure the listeners will will
no understand. He's the CEO of the Warriors, he was
at that stage the chair of New Zealand for Abred Racing,
and probably I would say middle of last year he

(01:58):
broke the idea with us and it was no brainer. So,
even though it has taken a while to get around
to today, happen reasonably quickly, which is what things that
are good should should enable to happen quickly, and it has.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
So I'm presuming you've got complete out of by on
buy in from everybody in the industry. They all want
to see the Barfoot and Thompson champions Day go ahead,
and I suppose get traction and get a foothold and
stay here.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, indeed, and look on that note. You know it's
not just removing the fact we're talking about Allesley here
and the Barfoot and Thompson Champions Day. This is going
to benefit the industry as a whole, which I think
is great because people have seen through with their their
their glasses, their parochialism for their own clubs and they

(02:50):
understand how good it is for the industry. And that's
that's from everything that that will be happening on the
day will flow back into all those other clubs throughout
New Zealand, which is important and you know, firmly sets
New Zealand's our New Zealand on the world stage and
has particularly the racing industry from around the world looking
at New Zealand racing for once, which is neat to

(03:12):
see and it's what we wanted, which is great superstar horses.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
That's what most people are there to see, right And
you go for the drinks, you go for the fashion,
you go for the day blood gud, but people really
want to see the bloodstock you've got out there. Tell
us some of your heroes that are out there racing.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Oh indeed, and you know, for your listeners out there
that might not be fully in tune with racing, it's
like turning up to the All Blacks match. You know,
you get all the pre event stuff. But you're there
to see the all blacks and you sit there to
see them when look, and it's the same with us
people here to see the horses. We've got some great

(03:49):
interest from Australia with the likes of evaporate perfumers and
public attention to name a few. And you know, don't
forget our New Zealand heroes as well. We've got Tuxedo
will you do it? In the Derby. We've got some
wonderful horses from keV Ken and Bev Calso sorry Legato

(04:10):
and Alabama lass So. Yeah. Look, this is a pinnacle
of the pinnacle and we've got the good athletes turning up.
And not to mention just the horses, but you know
the New Zealand jockeys. We've got Australian jockeys. It's exciting,
it's what it should be. It's the best of the
best and lucky enough it's happening here today for.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Group one races. That's where pretty much half your steak.
This was a three and a half million bicks there.
You've got some burg races and the Barfoton Thompson Auckland cut.
I suppose that's the hook you hag in the whole
event on you.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, it is probably the new initiative, the slot race
nzbkiwis that's the one that's really gonna change or put
this whole meeting onto steroids.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
So we're excited about that. As you pointed out, that's
where three and a half million these bonuses attack to
that which horses have been competing for throughout the campaign.
And then naturally, as you pointed out, we've got Auckland's
own Cup, the Buffett and Thompson Auckland Cup, and then
obviously the tracks on New Zealand Derby, which is a

(05:21):
blue ryeband event in racing in New Zealand, while derbies
are around the world. So yeah, don't ask me to
pick one. They're all they're all equal, but probably you know,
there's a there's a nice little touch running their inaugural
MZ Bigkiwi. That's that's one that we're really looking forward
to as well.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Might people want to get engaged. Gates opened at eleven o'clock,
racing starts twelve to fifteen, point people in the right
direction to get their tickets so they can get engaged
with this.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
You're very good, Dark you got that bang on don't
have to creast you're on any of that timing, which
is good, but look probably the easiest thing. Pretty much
everything's gone. We've we've still got general admission available, but
the best thing to do is allocy dot com in
zed that will tell them and then naturally if any

(06:10):
tickets pop up with late last minute cancelations, I'll be
able to see anything that's available outside of GA. So
if everyone heads to Alisi dot co dot in zed,
that should be able to sort them out and give
them and not only for purchasing tickets, but if you've
got your tickets, it's got a lot of interactive maps
here that can help with your navigation once you're on

(06:32):
course today and have a look around.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Hey, Paul Wilcox CEO or can throw ABD Racing, Thanks
so much for your time. You have a splendid day,
my friend.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Thank you very much, Darcy, and I'll be looking forward
to the nice cold beer around about six o'clock when
it's all over.
