Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildgrave from News Talk SEDB mister.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Tony Johnson as we look back at the two Super
games from last night, Hurricanes dominating the Warratars fifty seven
at twelve, that Brumby's getting the job done over the
Highlanders thirty four twenty seven and he joins us now,
Good morning morning, Darcy. Busy night of Super rugby last
(00:34):
night for at New Zealand teams and it's a weekend
where of course two of them aren't even performing at all.
A great result for the Wellingtonians, pretty horrible for the Highlanders.
We'll talk about what happened with the Hurricanes first, after
a very slow start, while a promising start for the Tars,
they scored first and then eventually they got absolutely flooded.
(00:56):
I remember saying about thirty something minutes into the game
it's not a high scoring game, but it's a high
impact game. And after that the accelerator got that have
became a very high scoring fixture.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Yeah. Look, I just didn't see that coming and in
fact I thought the tab were very generous with that.
They were offering the war Retars because you know their
team had just come off and went over the Brumbies,
And in the end it occurred to me after the
game it sort of reminded me a bit of a
game last year when the Brumbies went to Eden with
similar expectations and similar formen they got their clock cleaned
(01:32):
as well. Look, it's funny that you could say this
about a game in which a team has scored fifty points,
but I really do think the cornerstone of the Hurricanes
when was actually their defense. They defended. Yes they conceded
that early try, but they defended with such aggression, such accuracy,
they absolutely knocked the war Retars off their game. To
(01:55):
be fair to the war Retars, it's very hard to
back up in this competition. It's so tight, so even
two really good performances in consecutive weeks is not easy.
And yes, they had some disruptions with their injuries, but
you know they're bringing quality players on in their place.
But I just think they got knocked off their stride.
(02:15):
And if there was one moment that summed up or
led the way or set the bar, it was that
scything tackle that Bail and Sullivan made on Joseph Sua.
Lee just saying not on our house, champ. You know,
big reputation player, gifted player, but no, not here, not tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
And the effect they had right at the end of
that first half like bang bang, two very quick tries
which I think put the Tars on them on the
back foot. They didn't really know what it hit them
after that. They came back well at the start of
the first but it simply wasn't enough. And then it's
got run through some of the players out there us.
He was absolutely extraordinary. You mentioned bail in Southern. He
(02:53):
was quite something else. Rubin Love looked the goods.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah, look you're saying to me, it'll be a toss
up between him and Sullivan for my Man of the match.
The Warrior Tars would have put a lot of stock
on their much bigger forward pack gaining some sort of advantage,
but they didn't. As I walk lea where he was
another one coming in quite late into the game up
against those two gigantic New South Wales locks, but they
(03:20):
were clever around their line out variations. I think the
Warratas thought that they would get an advantage with ball
in hand. They're loose trio, they're all good ball carriers
Angus Bell you know, usually can be relied on for
a lot of meters in a game. Well, they didn't
get anything, and they were just completely cut down by
(03:41):
this as I say, aggressive but accurate defense led by
Sullivan and those loose forwards. But you'll says all round game,
he made a couple of lineout steels, he won a
lot of lineout ball, and it's just general play around
the field was quite outstanding. And this is a This
is a huge result for the Hurricanes because for the
(04:02):
moment it gets them up into the top six. But
it to them, look we can we can foot it
with the teams that are setting the pace and they
will go with great confidence to eaton Park next week
to take on the Blues.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, Wirata didn't shu in any favors though, I think
about thirty to fifty five minutes they got the yellow
card for collecting that scrum and then they were really
on the back food after that. There was no way
back for them.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Was it? No? No? And as I say that about
because once they got their momentum, and look, Lachlan McCaffrey,
their assistant coach, said it before the game that they
had to win the advantage line because they needed to
stop cam roy Guard from controlling the game or influencing
(04:46):
the game, and they felt the way to do it
was to stop the Hurricanes on the game. I well,
it was completely the other way around. They themselves were
stopped on the advantage line and they just didn't have
any momentum to build on, whereas once the Hurricans got
momentum some of the ball and threw the hand stuff
that you know, some of the quick you know, very
(05:06):
very quick passes or the wide passes or the flick passes,
just exquisite skills and obviously perfect conditions for that sort
of rugby and the warratars. You know, this will be
a real jolt to a team that was traveling along
along extremely well.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
The love back flick to Punuvie for that try was
something I thought about when you mentioned those flick passes.
Say over the ditch the Brumbies said high to the Highlanders.
Terrible start for them. Yellow cards straight away pretty much
for the Brumbies, but they just had too much I
think about twenty minutes to go, there was a lead
for the Highlanders, but some of their defense out wide
(05:46):
was a bit shonky for one of a better phrase,
so they had that coming. But you get a word
on the referees in that fix.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Oh yeah, look, look, it's just it was just a
moment in the game. First. You know, I'm not going
to take anything away from the Brumbies. Hell of a
hard team to beat at home, and they find ways
to win. And you know traditionally, you know they are
a tough nut to bowl on their home patch. I
just it's a general thing in the last couple of weeks. Look,
(06:14):
we've praised with refereeing so far in the competition because
you know they are speeding the game up. They have
this edict to go out there and you know, real
or a mandate, I should say, to go keep things
chicking over. I just wonder whether they might be going
a bit too far. We had a couple of incidents
last week where the referees were probably remiss in not
(06:36):
stopping play for an injured player, or you know that
the Reds were blowing up Deluxe about a shot that
was put on a young Tom Liner by one of
the Highlanders forwards. And then I thought last night, at
a fairly important start of the game, I thought a
clear cut shoulder charged by one of the Brumbies players
(06:56):
just went unpunished, and you know, yeah, they've done a
great job, but the laws are still the laws, and
of safety is still a concern and I just think
they need to dial the lass a fair back a
little bit. I'm not saying that that was the winning
or losing of the game, but it was a key
(07:17):
moment of the game. And look, there could have been
others that went the other way in the game as well.
There's just one that stood out to me, Darcy. But
in the end, once again, win or lose. The margin
when you play the Highlanders is eight points or.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Less tight for one of a better word with that,
you better go jump on your plane. Happy travels back
to the way he came. We'll catch up again soon,
Tony Johnson. The pleasure has been ours.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Cheer buddy.
