Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks edbo S.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Talking basketball now sALS n b L is still early
days in the calm, but she's starting to get running.
And we're talking now to Jackson Ball, a young fella
in a hurry, still at school. He's a Hawks bay
Hawks guard. They're taking on Tarderannaky ears. He joins us. Now,
good morning, Jackson, morning morning, big day for you, as

(00:36):
it always is. You guys are trailing or not trailing.
You guys are doing very well, aren't you know? A
Hawks bay Hawks are seemed to be in a bit
of a rhythm.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Yeah. You've got a bit of a role going on.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Ye, And it's a role going on without your imports,
and a lot of teams have that early in the season.
So that's a positive for you because the reinforcements are coming. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
No, it's really exciting.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
We just got a good group of guys who have
stuck together through this first part of the season.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
So look forward to the import the onmin in ye.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yes, so when they turn up there, they're going to
pinch God those positions. How do you feel about that?

Speaker 4 (01:08):
No, I think I think you've runs pretty feeling pretty
good about it. To be fair, it'll be tough to
let some guys go. They won't be able to play
as much, get as many minutes, but we'll be a
pretty good team when the imports comings.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
I think that'll make up for it.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
You've got the Rapid League as well, so you've got spots,
haven't you? People still playing? And it's that's such a
good andiative, isn't it. What a couple of years it's
been going for now.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, this is the second year it's been running for
the NBO, and yeah, it's really cool. Just given some
some of the bench guys a good run before the game.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
What do you see? You're in a guard spot? Are
you likely to stick around where you drop down? You've
still got a bench roll.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah, it all depends on what the coach wants. I guess.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
I definitely see myself having a big role part of
the team still, But whether that's starting or coming off
the bench plain Rapid League, I'm I'm happy either way.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
So give us a little bit about your hastory Jackson Ball.
How long you've been playing, where you come from, where
you're going to?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Yeah, well, I'm obviously quite young.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
I'm still seventeen, so I'm still nappy boys high school
at the moment, going going well there, play play for
New Zealand, both edge groups, and I made my debut
for the Tour Blacks this year, so that's pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
More than awesome, it's fantastic. It's seventeen. Do you pinch
yourself sometime and go, what the hell am I doing here?

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Yeah, it's all a bit of a blur sometimes it
happens so fast, but not pretty greatful them.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
The balance with that and your school work, because you
even know basketball might not be all that, so you've
got to get some education behind you, don't you.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
What are you focusing on?

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Well, yes, it's not high school, so I'm not sure
heading over to Wisconsin next year.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Not sure what I'm going to study, but you know,
I figure it out.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, so you're rolling over there to play university. You
must have told them what you want to do besides
shooting shooting a boar? Or was that what it's all about?

Speaker 3 (02:58):
At the moment.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
For me, that's what it's all about. But you know,
I definitely have to start thinking about that sort of stuff.
But I'm just pretty happy playing basketball at the moment.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Wow, I'm going to be your guidance. What are you
good at? Come on, what are you at the side sitting? Oops?
What else do you enjoy.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
At school at the moment? I think mass is kind
of my thing.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
I didn't expect that. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Well, to be honest, I don't have a lot of
hobby that'side of basketball. It takes up a lot of time.
So I'm just based between basketball and school.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
When did you pick up a ball for the first time, Jackson?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
When I was about eight at primary school.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, some teachers said, wow, you're really basketball and I
was like, I'll come play basketball.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
So as far as your growth from eight through till seventeen,
you're in a guard role, so you don't have to
be massively tall. But has that been effective in your
career the way you've developed.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, well, I'm obviously a little bit bigger than most
of the guards in my positions.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
That gives me a lot of advantages both being able
to see.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
The floor and just a bit of exercise is the way.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
It's good. So absolutely it's help with my development.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
So what are you standing at.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I'm about six five at the moment.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Okay, seventeen six five, I'm freaking out already. What about
like as you're developing, I'm trying to remember back when
I was seventeen years a while ago now. But you've
still got a lot of broadening to do. You've got
a lot of weight to pot on. You're still very
early on. You got targets around where you'd like to
set out as far as you are your body and

(04:23):
your presence is concerned.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Yeah, I'm obviously looking to put on a little bit more,
a little bit more muscle, get a little bit stronger,
but you know, and a little bit taller, it'd be awesome.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
But now I'm going pretty well so far.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
So where do you need to improve on court? Because
you've still got, as you said, a lot of growing
to do. But what about your skills? Where do you
need to lift? Do you think?

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, it's at the moment. It's everything you can always improve.
But at the moment, I'm really looking to get a
little bit more athletic, which just a little bit stronger,
just because at the next levels, everyone's tall, everyone's got skill.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
ID just have to be able to keep up.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
Has that been an eye opener for you?

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (05:05):
No especial, especially in this league. It's all grown men,
so they're all just trying to beat me up. So
I was like, definitely got to get a little bit tougher,
a little bit stronger.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Do they bully you, bro?

Speaker 4 (05:15):
They tried to, not always successful, but they definitely try.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Right, How are you gonna bully your opposition the SAFF
the Noon Rapid League first up, and then you've got
the the real McCoy I suppose up after that. So
what are you going to bring to the court as
far as pushing Taranaki around in their own house?

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yeah, we just got to We just gotta play with
a lot of pace.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
I think we've done a lot of a lot of
work getting prepared for this game, and I think pace
is going to be a big factor in our outcome
of the game.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
You're going to have a not a new coach, but
your head coach is on the way over from Ilawarra
as well, and you've been running with the deputy if
you will, before that. The transition between ideals is that
going to change much? Are they on the same song sheet?

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Yeah? Yeah, We've still done a lot of call calls
and stuff with Sam so him and the coaches are
on the same page at the moment. But yeah, it's
going to be definitely a lot more yelling when he
comes back.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
But no, I'm excited for it.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
How do you respond to being yelled at?

Speaker 3 (06:20):
I don't mind it. To be fair, I try.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
I try to listen to the words people say, not
how they say it, because the motion's run high, especially
in basketball, so I try my best to not focus
on being yelled at and try to listen to what
he's actually saying.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
Aren't you still at school. You'd be used to getting
yelled at, wouldn't. I don't put you into detention.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Not me, not me. I'm a I'm a good lad.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Looking forward to watching the game this afternoon. What time
do you tip off against Taranaki?

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yep, rapidly tips off at three o'clock and NBL tips
off at four.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Get a Monks, great to meet you. Really enjoyed the conversation,
Jackson ball, go well, go hard and grow Yeah, thank
you very much. No, don't don't grow.
