The All Sports Breakfast with Darcy Watergrave, hughs Talks ed B.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Gracious me, it is eight minutes after eight on a
Saturday a m at New Zealand And v. Black I'm
sorry the New Zealand black Cats bey Pakistan or they
could probably take themselves on.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Is to be pretty good display that happens today. It's
the third and final One day International. Jacob Duffy joins
us now to discuss Good morning, Jacob.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Good morning, Thanks having me and thanks.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Very much for joining us on match day, on the
last day of domestic cricket. It's when are we some
deep in the fourth month or the start of anyway.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
It's quite surreal, isn't it last summer?
Speaker 5 (00:58):
So it was a nice point to get here in
fit and healthy, so that would be good finish. We're
looking to finish the sumstrong so well.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
It's the thing, isn't it fit and healthy? It's something
new athletes are always looking at. And have you had
any twinges recently?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Touch Wood? No, I'm feeling fit and strong, But yeah, it's.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Been funny and i'd say last day of summer obviously,
but to be fair, in the next couple of days
me and a few of the other guys are shipping
off and carrying on. So it's the end of the
summer here in New Zealand. But then the ball just
keeps rolling, so there's never really an end for us anyway.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
No, it's a global season.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Where are you off to after Worcester?
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Got three months stint over there playing some county cricket
and some blasts.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
So fantastic, So going off to summer and you're carrying
some pretty hot formatively fair to say if you look
at the gong, you've just gotten the T twenty number
one bowling rank. Did that come out of nowhere for you, Jacob?
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Yeah, I didn't know.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
It's a funny one, probably helped by the fact where
there anyone's playing twenty twenty international cricket at the moment.
But it's one of those ones that's it's a cool
thing to have on your resume, and you know, to
see your name up there with some of the bowlers
in world cricket's pretty special. So we'll definitely I'll definitely
take it.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
You've had a great season. Just look back at the
season so far. Has there been a particular highlight for
you with the ball, a ball, or an over or
a game. Anything. You look back and go, you know,
that summer worked all right?
Speaker 5 (02:20):
There was differently, there's that one over and against Sri
Lanka was quite cool the first twenty twenty out at
the mountain and we were looking like we were going
to get spanks. So they had a good opening partnership
chasing one seven year old. But I got three hits
in the over and sort of seemed to turn momentum
and then from there we sort of went on to win.
So to actually have meaningful impact and like winning performances
(02:41):
for jusy arms for your country, that's that's kind of
what it's all about.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
And that day it was pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
And Jacob Duffy joins us on the program. He had
the third one day internationals. It still got relevance. Do
you think I mean when you play this, because you
look at the way the test schedule or the international
schedule may well be changing to emphasize their T twenty
leagues and then stick all of these other series in between.
Does that give more meaning for you as a player.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
Mate, for a guy on my shoes where you know
you're you're sort of getting some sporadic opportunities, it means
it means the world still. So I remember Nick Nathan
Smith gave Nick Kelly as cat on the morning of
the Napier first eardio and you know they were both
in tears. Phoebe as Missus was there. They're in tears.
You know it's still its international cricket. It means a lot.
(03:29):
Guys work a lot, you know, put a lot of
hard yards and if it year on year to get
to this point. So I think anyone in their position
taking it for granted would be a something.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Tell us, well, you can experience that, because when did
you debut? Was way back in what twenty twenty?
Speaker 5 (03:44):
I want to say, yeah, I think twenty twenty, Yeah,
about December twenty twenty.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
I think it was Agast, Pakistan in the twenty twenty debut.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
So it's been a long time, but you've always been
there or thereabouts. How do you keep driving? How do
you keep striving to pick that cap up?
Speaker 5 (04:01):
I kind of have, mate, It's well, everyone says it's
a long hard Joe I don't eything.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
It's a brilliant group to be part of. I really
enjoy the touring.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
With the guys when I'm not playing, you know, as
part of that India series away winning test matches over
there and and you know England series and all sorts
of stuff. I was at Champions Trophy this year and
didn't get to play again, but it's a it's a brilliant.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Journey to be part of. Obviously, you want to be
out there playing and you.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
Want to be the one contributing to winning games, but
it's still an awesome group to be part of. And
I think if you've got the right attitude, you know
you're still looking to use those opportunities to get better
and grow your game way your way and not playing
it's that's the main thing.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
And honestly, I just bloody love it. So that's good fun.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Interesting. The I suppose the depth in bowling stocks and
quick bowling stocks at the moment, there's a lot of
you guys now vying for position you're slightly older, maybe
then you'd like. But the one you Zealand's been selecting
players and letting them actually get some games under their belt.
I'd suggest that you guys like to when he's early
(05:06):
thirties would be right in your prime. And this is
this is perfect, So the fight must be pretty rich
between you.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
All easy on on the old thing. I'm only just
turned thirty, so.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
I wouldn't say, oh, I see it old, Okay, get
your break. I mean you're not twenty one, are you?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
No? No, not twenty one.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
Yeah, it's a funny one. I feel like I don't know.
Everything that'scotted me to this point has has helped me
grow to the sort of the player ram Now.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
You know, I've got a lot of.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Domestic experience to call back on, and I feel very
comfortable now sort of at the international level, which you know,
I can go out and compete and perform because I
can bank on that sort of experience. But we've got
a great group of guys. We've got all sorts of
different bowlers in there. We got you know, you hit
the deck bowlers, your kjoling from six foot eight. We've
got your speedy guys and cis and guys are going
(05:52):
swing with your folks here whether all your all rounders
and smudge.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
You know, we got all the bases covered.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
And the best thing is It's a great bunch of
guys and we will feed off each other pretty well.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
And yeah, lead beautifully by Mett Henry.
Speaker 5 (06:05):
Wo's probably in my opinion top top three best bowler
in the world.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
So I think we're in. Yeah, we're in a pretty
good place.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Keep taking poles, mate. I hope you have a great
day today. Enjoy your time over in England. We look
forward to you returning and maybe getting a Test cap
at some stage. Jacob Duffy, thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
You go, well, that'd be the dream. But yeah, no,
I appreciate your time.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Dream on, my friend, dream on. Keep taking poles, not
smoking poles, Okay, very important that we make their definition.
Eleven o'clock today, mar Maganui bay Oval final act of
the summer of cricket.
