The Warriors know they'll have to be at their best to take down the Cowboys in tonight's Magic Round contest in Brisbane.

After starting the year with three straight losses, the Cowboys have rebounded with four wins on the trot.

Number six Chanel Harris-Tavita says it's up to him and halves partner Luke Metcalf to drive the team to a fourth straight win over the Cowboys, but he admits their combination is still a work in progress.

Kick-off for the Warriors home match on neutral territory at Suncorp Stadium is at 7.30pm.

Former Kiwis international Daryl Halligan joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
First we go to the Magic Round. Warriors are taking
on the Cowboys tonight at seven thirty. Preview that action
now with the stray Dog Wolf Wolf Daryl Halligan.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Good morning, Darryl, Ahi the Bondy There, guys, Gold and
new Zellen. Absolutely stunning over here in Australia. I know
you've had a bit of a rubbish weather weak but
te Magic Round.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Does it get any better?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Nor?

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Well?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
I know it's chocolate blot full of kiwis as well.
I've seen a whole heap of them yesterday.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Thanks for rubbing it in, Darryl. Where we are that
that works a treat. Hey, Look the wires are up.
It's a home game for them, even though it's in Brisbane,
because it's the Magic Round. They're taking on the cow Men.
And when you look at this matchup, is it fair
to say they're probably two of the most underrated teams
that are flying under the radar sofa you don't hear

(00:58):
much about them, but they're getting the job done, aren't they.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
I think when you look at the ladder you have
a lot can see, you know, with the Warriors and
fourth in the Cowboy is in sixth.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Everyone's going, how did that happen? Sort of thing.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
But I mean the Warriors are five and two and
the Cows they said first three and then they've won
their last four. So if you can win five in
a row in this competition, no matter what time year,
even through origin and that, then you're definitely going to
play in the eighth at the end of the year.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
So no, the Cows have found some form for Toddy Payton.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
I think it comes off the back of like Johnny
Bateman and Jeremiah and I in the back row. They
seem to have found their groove if you like. And
then the Hearts are quite exciting. Joe Clifford's been in
the system for a little while and Tom Dead and
is as close to Nathan Cleary as you can get
without possibly the class of the kicking game, but running
at the line.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
He's a real guy.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, And there's a lot to like in the Warrior's
side too. Of course, you were with them yesterday, you
were kicking a ball around with him. What's the general
scene around there?

Speaker 4 (01:58):
They were in good form yesterday.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
They shot across the night before and had the captains
run out at Ballymore there and yeah, they looked, they
looked in their groove.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I mean, Webby's done a great job this year.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
You consider you know, Rogers due back soon, Fish is
nearly on his way back. Dlan whittenes a Lesniak, so
there's been a lot of rotation of players through the system.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
Yeah, they were great.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
I mean Mitch Barnett was there firing down the orders
and Jackson Ford I don't know where he plays. He
goes sidewards, he sometimes goes forwards, but he's got a
bloody big motor and it seems to work. And then
the two young kids are going really really good by
Lecqua and of course the metric. So yeah, no, it
was exciting Rocker Berry get another opportunity to actually get
some games under his belt for the year. So a

(02:46):
real toss of the coin in terms of, you know,
the winner out of this one.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
But I do like.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
The fact that our haves are getting more and more
settled in terms of Luke Metcalf and Janel Trevido Harris,
So they're starting to find when to play, when not
to play, who does what and who doesn't.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
So yeah, there's lots to like about the Warriors.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
I hope it doesn't take magic rounds for them to
actually really put a score on someone.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Where we see you talk about defined roles, and that's
what we're getting with the Has. But let's look a
consistency of the favorite word in rugby league, the consistency
of the spine. What we've got there is amazing. You
can build victories, you can build teams around that. And
sometimes the Warriors don't have that because the injury God's
turn up and wreck everything. But that's looking good in fact,

(03:32):
right across the team, there is some consistency in selection.
It's a regular team.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
And it's got to be good.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, it is a regular team, but there's also players
who have played a lot of positions and a lot
of minutes this year as well. Way Megans played everything
that's thrown in front of him, and also Kurt Cape
well out, why do you I mean he's played back
row and then he shifted in the centers, actually ended
up in the wing in one game. And then when
Chance did go down and get injured, you know, Taine
drops back into that fallback position really seamlessly. So he's

(04:00):
massage the squad really really well to actually just jump
in and fill the spots, and the guys in more
than kable of doing it. So I guess it gives
the confidence. Really, I mean, a few're five and two
in this competition. Then after a bye and you're sitting forth,
I mean, yeah, you're going to go places the.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Next couple of weeks. So then it's origin.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
So we only have a couple of players Mitch Barnett,
maybe Kurt Cable might get a thing for Queensland again.
But there's plenty to like about the side at the moment.
But you know what happens when we talk them up.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Ah, they're terrible, terrible nowhere. It's the worst team I've
ever seen. They talk about talking things up so much
energy around at Liquor Halasina. He's only a kid. I
think the big thing here is can he actually carry
that pressure of expectation you'd since hegan the way he plays.
But there's a lot on that boy's shoulders.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
He shown some really I guess classy pieces of skill,
hasn't he really with the ball in hand?

Speaker 4 (04:58):
And I guess when they were sitting.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
On the on the bench early in the season, in
the first couple of rounds and they only got sort
of like seven and eight minutes or twelve fifteen minutes,
and everyone's going.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Let's give these kids a little bit more. We want
to see them, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
And now we're starting to see that, you know, the
experience of of where be just bleeding them in and
giving them the game time. And then the game has
actually given them more and more time as well, because
they need to stand up now with a couple of
injuries and what have you. But yeah, no class and
stuff we haven't seen for a while. And you know,
we've always been excited about our young kids, you know, Clinton, Torpia,

(05:32):
Ali Lao Titi when they come onto the scene and
you know, they could swing the ball and hold it
in one hand and you know, palm players off even
you know, Arwen Gutenbil and they I mean, these kids
are obviously the future of the Warriors and they're exciting.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
And there's many more like.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Them out of our younger grades that are playing rugby
league across the country. So no more of it, you know,
I don't think we can see enough of them.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Hey, Darryl, thanks so much for joining us. As always,
enjoy the magic round and we'll pest you again soon.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Yeah. Got only meant to go well the wise.
