Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildgrave from News talks'b.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
That's the eighth eighth state, that's the time of it. Anyway,
that was a reference for you old techno people out there.
We're joined now by Super Rugby Pacific commentator mister Tony Johnson.
To Marty Tony, I'm glad you've joined us because there's
plenty to talk about in a short amount of time.
We've got to look back at two games last night,
a big game coming up tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Well, what did you take out of last night?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
There was some scary stuff for the Crusaders for mine,
and you've really got a feel for.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
The Highlanders spotless goalkicking up until last night.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Yeah, well, so many of their games this year have
been decided a few points and this was one really
that they could have won with better goalkicking. And you
know a couple of guys who normally are very reliable kickers,
and last night they just couldn't nail them. They had
other opportunities to to score points, didn't take them either
good defending by the Crusader or turning the ball over,
(01:08):
those sorts of things. And look, you know that they
led a great chance to win the game slip. I
don't think even if they'd wanted, it would have been
enough to keep them in the hunts of the competition,
but it certainly would have affected the top of the table.
And the Crusaders will be very, very relieved to get
out of that one.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, a bit of a shamble sometimes time for the Crusaders,
a punch in the nose, but it had a couple
of those this season, so something to be worried about.
What's so the good thing about the competition this year,
of course, Tony, is that one v six three, anyone
could be anybody come finals time.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It's the home advantage only.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
Right, Yeah, well you look at the table now, that
was a game between one v eleven and it didn't
sort of feel like it. In fact, there were times
I thought the Highlanders were very good. But the Crusaders
found a way to win, and that's what really matters.
And so they go back to the top of the table.
Now it's up to the Chiefs. They get a chance
to either join them or probably if they win that
(02:03):
game tonight, they'll go ahead of them on points four
and against and positions that particularly those top three, top
two going to be really important. And look, you know, Crusaders,
there are a lot of milestones in the game last night,
and sometimes those can prove to be a little bit
of a distraction. But you know, and amongst it all
we've got Severn refs, not in the way that I
think people would have anticipated, a slightly dubious try I thought,
(02:29):
but one that was awarded anyway for his record breaking try.
So he've got that on his own and then had
other players, you know, with fifty games and one hundred
and fifty games and whatever. You but at the end
of it all, they survive a nail bier and now
they will have to go to Canberra to play the Brumbies,
who are once again a gnali team, very hard to
(02:51):
beat over there, and that's going to be absolutely crucial
because that will decide you know, you know, who finish
the higher up in the table, and who knows how
important that'll be in the final analysis.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Last night, the Hurricane's got a job done. G with
Billy Proctor.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Things look good, don't They have managed to work it out,
get it done. And I didn't pick that the Reds
at home, but well done to then it's great for
their title prospects knowing they can do that.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Well, what it means is that they are now absolutely
guaranteed that they will finish inside the top six. They
still needed to win that game to be absolutely sure
of it with a game in hand, and what they'll
want to do is stay there. Now. They can't finish
any higher than fourth, but they don't want to finish
any lower. The higher you finish, the more the chances
that you will get two bites of the cherry when
(03:43):
it comes to the playoffs, because the top ranked losing
team will stay in the competition. That's the draw that
they've got with three you know of those first round
playoff games, So that was really important. Yeah. Look there
were first of all the double to FINANEROFWL, who is
one of this clutch of new wingers that we've seen
(04:05):
in the competition this year that are really standing out,
showed a lot of power to score those tries. Another
outstanding performance of the breakdown by dupless kit Ify. Although
the Reds are blowing up and the Reds fans are
blowing up over the leeway that he was allowed at
the breakdown by Paul Williams, I don't know how much
of that is fantasy how much of it is reality.
But he won the battle with Fraser mcwright, which you
(04:29):
know who is Australia's best player when it comes to
the breakdown. So that is a huge philip for Duplessy
kit Ify, who has been one of the stars of
their performance this year. And of course another very good
eye catching performance by Billy Proctor, who I mean, I'm
not picking the All Black team, but if I was,
(04:50):
he would be my starting number thirteen just based on
the form that he's shown this year in Super Rugby.
But I think the key to it is that they
are giving him just that little bit more of an
opportunity to shine than Rico Yuanni is getting at the
Blues the way they play. But I think they were
the three standouts. But that is an excellent win to
beat a very good Reds team and it's it's pushed
(05:13):
them ahead of the of the Reds, and the recording
pushed the Reds down to five. I think they'll probably
be good enough to stay there and they could get
up to four. But but you know that that again,
that's another significant outcome when it comes to the position
on the table.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Mawana passiveka up against the Chief's nervous time for the Chiefs.
Very good team, but Mowana the joker and the pack
the way they play, and I've heard that they've cloned
a few more Artie Savias, so it looks like the
Chiefs are going to be in trouble.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
That this has got everything this match. This is such
a vibrant side.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Molana well, yeah, and their performance last week was it
is absolutely outstanding and I mean so much of the
talk was about Artie Savi, but there were other players
and the team that shone as well. And I think
that maybe, you know, partly due to the effect that
he's having this is that you know, players are lifting
their game. You know, he's had an incredible impact on
(06:09):
the side, but they are collectively playing well. I suppose
The big question is, and it's been one of the
I think one of the talking points about Super Rugby
this year is is you know, can teams play at
that level of intensity week in week out, because they're
going to have to come up with something Every bit
is good, if not better than that this week. If
(06:30):
they're going to play beat the Chiefs. If they do
beat the Chiefs, well, then I think you can say
that they probably are odds on to stay, you know,
and finish in the top six. But you know, because
they've got a very tough final two weeks more, three
weeks more in a PACIFICA. So that to me that
you know, that's going to be a big factor in
(06:52):
this game. Can they produce a performance of that intensity?
Can Ardie Savva produce another performance of that incredible quality?
If they can, then I think the Chiefs have got
a hell of a fight on their hands. But at
the moment and just the way things have been going
the seat, I still the Chiefs are you are well
equipped for this game and they will see too that
(07:14):
they will have their site set on the top of
the table, no question, and if they win the game
tonight then they are a big step closer to.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
That will be epic, gonna be huge, scary, scary prospect
Moan passifica. They are taking on the Chiefs tonight five
past seven, We will have the call on Gold Sport
and that was Tony Johnson and Duane and Sport Broadcasting.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Rugby commentary particularly great Havingtony on.
