Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News TALKS'B.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're joined by old mate friend of the programs in
general all round, Good bugger, mister Tony Johnson.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Good morning to you, Tony.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Were in a Darcy Howrey mate.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I'm very happy, plainly after last night's result made me smile.
But that matters not because they've none who've won nothing yet.
But what did you make of what the Crusaders did
last night? I think there's one word. Netword is scrum.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
Yeah, they're just a bit too clinical, you know. Going
into the game, I felt that, you know, numbers six
to fifteen, they had a reasonably even spread a talent
across the two teams, that they were reasonably well matched.
But at one to five, the numbers was always going
to be where the game was decided, and on a
nightlight that it was decided by the numbers one to
(01:00):
five and it was a no contest. Hopefully to Mighty
Williams is not too bad because he Taylor and Newell
they just destroyed the red scrum won that succession of
early penalties and that really dictated the terms of the
match of classic Crusaders in a way. They just took
control of the game, particularly in that set piece, and
everything flowed on from there.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
The new was again tremendous.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
He's got a V twelve engine, he's got a heart
like a lion. He's quite something else that the domination
with him and Timinety was what.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
It was scary. It made the Reds look seek in class.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Which then not are they Yeah, well, they don't have
that sort of quality in their front row though, as
theat is a good hooker, but they it's a combination
of technique and power. And Nowson Williams and Newell both,
I mean, Newell has been a terrific form. We've had
a few injuries and as I said, hopefully looking at
the bigger picture that that knee injury of Williams isn't
(01:58):
too bad because you can see those two both being
right in the all black frame for this match or
serious coming up against the French. But what means is
the Crusaders through. And it means now that both semis
will be played in New Zealand. Even if the two
Chiefs lose, they'll only be able to drop the second seed.
(02:20):
So guaranteed two semi finals. In New Zealand next week.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
So tonight Chiefs take on the Blues. It's the Bombay Battle.
It's at f m G. Chiefs have gone alive, the
Blues haven't. The Blues are in the ascendency. The Chiefs
haven't dropped from where they've been right since.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
The start of the season. How does this work out?
Which way does this go?
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah, I'll try and explain it in as simple terms
as I can. Darcy, you know, get a pen and
paper because I'll ask questions later. But look, if the
Chiefs win, they'll play the loser of the Brumbies Hurricanes
game and the Crusaders will host the winners of the
match in Canberra. So that scenario of it not really
mattering in terms of who survives who goes out. That
(03:05):
won't that game in Canberra, which is you know, the
scenario that people are talking about. But if the Blues
do win in Hamilton, and let's not forget that the
last time they went down there they were beaten by
the width of a goalpost, the sideline conversion that hit
the post and bounced away in a thirty two to
thirty one loss. But if the Blues win in Hamilton,
(03:28):
then they'll play the Crusaders in christ Church and the
Chiefs would play the winner of the Hurricanes Brumby's match,
and the loser in Canberra would be out. And so
that match in Canberra would become extremely important. But that
all depends on whether the Blues win. And look, they've
been in that stay alive mode for quite some time now,
(03:48):
and they'll be well motivated going to Hamilton. They know
that probably most people have written them off as potential
for a defending championship run. But I think anything's possible
the way this competition's played out, and so it really
now become a very juicy prospect this game.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Do you have a favorite either way?
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Look, I think you've got to back the Chiefs at home,
and just looking at some of the numbers, I mean,
they've scored twenty more tries than the Blues this year,
seventy five to fifty five. Their defenses are about even.
I think the Blues have conceleted is considered slightly fewer tries.
The Chiefs points differential two thirty one plus Blues just
forty seven, which kind of underlines the manner of the
(04:33):
scrap that they've had this year just to stay alive.
You know, the Chiefs just seem so organized on attack
that they they've got their structures, they've got their setups,
but they're still they don't sacrifice their ability to hit
what's in front of them, and they have a very
good attack and a forward pack that you know, really
(04:53):
rolls up at sleeve and does its job well. Aiden
Ross playing his hundredths tonight, there's another incentive for them.
The Blues, I think that, you know, they've got to
bring a bit more than the crash bash that we've
seen from them most of the season, and we saw
a bit of that, expanding the horizons last week enabling
Rico Joanne to score three. They've got Tillia and Clark
(05:15):
back together pretty late in the season, but they've got
to create opportunities for them and if they do that
then they are a chance at an upset. But if
the Blues just try and kick the door down, I
think the Crusaders, sorry, the Chiefs, will be well ready
for that.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Playing the Crusaders at the Orange Theory Stadium leaned to
it him in a call It is horrible away gain.
Possibly second is playing the Brumbies at their place at
the Jero stadium in Cambra.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Yeah, look mate, I think I I mean it's kind
of Happy Valley christ Church compared to playing in the
Candra And it's going to be worse than ever tonight
after that blow up after the game last week, that
cacophony of grizzling that came after the game between the
(06:07):
Crusaders and the Brumbies, and I think the guy who's
going to be in the focus and this is really unfortunate,
but this is the atmosphere or the lens that's been
created for this game. If you like that, it's all
going to be on Nick Berry. The crowd are going
to ride him from start to finish. Every little suggestion
(06:28):
of an era that doesn't go unpunished by the Hurricanes
is just going to be met with a wall of booing.
It does create a rather joyless sort of an atmosphere
for a game. They've always been a bit chippy by
their very nature, the way they were created that the
offshoots I guess of Australian rugby, so there's always been
a bit of a chip on the shoulder. But it's
(06:50):
going to be even worse for this game after what
happened last week, which makes the task of the Hurricanes
probably that much harder. They've lost a supple or more.
That's a really big blow too, because his ability to
power the ball up, whether it's in traffic or whether
it's in a bit of space, that is a really
important part of their game. They've still got plenty of that.
(07:12):
I think, you know, obviously the ability of duplecy cold
ify to win turnovers at crucial stages, and if they
can create some some forward momentum then they've got that
dazzling back line that can take advantage of it. But
if they allow the Brumbies to get in front dictate
the terms, it's going to be a tough night for them.
(07:33):
I think the key is getting in front of The
Brumbies don't necessarily chase the game particularly well, and so
that that might be the key for it for the Hurricanes.
That and staying on the good side of a referee
who is just basically going to have a target on
us back.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I think ferl's too generous a word to use when
it comes to that crowd there. I can see Lennik
at least pull something out of the bag like he
did last week, what a stunt, and try that was
what an offload for him.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
To pierce through. That'd be great, but really we.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Want the Hurricanes to win because we want Super Rugby
dominance to stay here. Don't mean, Tony Johnson think very
much for your time. You've got the call tonight with
the Chiefs and the Blues.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
I have indeed looking forward to that one too. Good
a right, Tony Johnson, thank you very much for your
time
