The Chiefs are confronting their unwanted record in Super Rugby finals ahead of tonight's decider against the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Defeats to tomorrow night's hosts in 2021 and 2023 as well as a loss to the Blues last year paint an ugly picture for the visitors.

However, the team won both of their regular season contests comfortably, and are entering the final with a points differential more than 120 points better than any other team.

Assistant Coach David Hill joined D’Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk ZEDB Morning Made.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
How were going, I'm going, well, David, what about yourself?
Not long now until that title is up for grabs,
something that saluted you guys for quite some time. So
she's all on.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
No, feeling pretty good. It's been a good week, hey,
with how it's all gone, and yeah, been here before
pretty similarly, so I'm just looking forward to getting stuck in.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
So the record's not been fantastic. I mean, you've got there,
you've just not done it. Is that hanging around the
coaching groove and the team like a like a bad smell, David.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
So it's a strange one because because we've been there regularly,
we know how much effort and time and sacrifice and
commitment it takes for it to get there, and it's
not an easy thing to get to. So, you know,
like the the Cure says have done it for a
while but missed out last year. The Blues probably simming
to us, been there for three or four of the
last five. So it is there's a massive effort and

(01:04):
should be. We're really proud of the effort to get
to this point. So now we just you know, learned
from a few of those experiences last year in particular,
and just you know, really keen to write it to
you on the right sould of Leig just so to speak.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Is there anything particularly you think that you've messed over
the last few years. Has anything changed remarkably to turn
this result? Do you think, David, we did.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yeah, I think so, not remarkably. But go back to
a couple of years ago. It was twenty twenty one.
We probably weren't quite ready for that one. There was
probably a bit quicker twenty three was you know, we
were in the right place and you know, leading and
doing everything right, but still ended up playing the game
with two yellow cards and only just just fallen short.

(01:47):
Last year was you know, we ran into a team
in a wet night in Auckland that we're pretty good,
and we probably didn't have the game plan to negate
that and to counter that. So you add all those
together and you know, learned from a few of those
lessons and we can look back and go, well, we'll
majority of us have been here before and been through
this before. Something's going to happen. And as always in finals,

(02:08):
the margins are pretty small, so there's a little shared
experience around that one that we've had to do it
a couple of different ways and come out on the
wrong side of it. So hopefully we can do it
our way and play our game and like I said,
come out on the right side.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
You guys have had a great season so far. You've
had a couple of stumbles, sure, but it only matters
what happens tonight over that eighty minute. So preparation wise,
how seid are you? Blokes have yeah, cost all your
teas and dotted all your eyes.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, oh definitely. Yeah. Well, you know, we've got guys who've,
like I said, been been in the team for four
or five years now, and four or five years ago
there were ten twenty gamers. Now they're fifty sixty gamers.
So across the whole we've got good depth and good
strength and quite a balanced squad. So you know, a
lot of credit goes to them for the work they
put in and how they have to go about, you know,
preparing and competing every day. So again, because of all

(02:58):
that feeling, we're well set up in. The players are
pretty you can see it. They're pretty confident that they can,
they can do it and they deserve to be there,
And yeah, it'll just prepared as usual this week and
I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
We all know that you focus on yourself and you
focus on your men, you focus on what you're doing,
but you can't not look up and look at what's
on the other side of the part. What can you
tell me about the threat that the Crusaders bring.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, well there's a little bit of that as an
element of that. We know, like majority of people in
media and sport, what they're going to go to, what
they did last week to the Blues. You know, defense
is there's a big one for them. They've talked about it. Lots.
Set pieces obviously another big one. So nothing unexpected there.
But when you look at them and you look back
at our games in the last couple of years, that's

(03:46):
a place that we've been to before. We've beaten them before,
beaten them twice this year. So it's most of our
prep this week has been around what we can do
and a little bit around what they are doing. But
good d team, good team around set piece, So no surprises.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Do you guys tap into emotion much around members of
the staff that won't be there come the end of
this game. Clayton McMillan, of course, is the obvious one.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Well, I asked him that he's the elephant in the
room and he got offended. So there's been no talk
about that, you know, that's just that's been talked about
further earlier in the year. Sean was clear when he
was going. Clayton was clear, this is this is the
decision that's been made, and we just crack on and

(04:30):
do it. So again, because I've been here before, got
other guys leaving, you know. You know, there's always a
turnover of players every year. So the emotion for those boys,
I don't think or for Sean and Clayton in particular,
but probably a few others. You know, hopefully the emotion
is a joy afterwards. But we won't be spending too
much time on the emotional side of it. To send
him off, I don't think that's the way to go.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Well, one thing's up now, David. One last thing, and
be careful what you say. Angus Gardner is the man
with the whistle. How do you think he's going to
go as far as managing these two titans of the
game in a super rugg Pacific Final, but.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Not my decision who the right men, but he's who
we've got. So again it's you know, like we've had
the last week, a couple of weeks ago, I've been
rifted by him regularly, no and well good relationship with
their captain and our players. So you know, it's we
all know it's a it's a tough job and it's
a job that will be scrutinized either way. Most finals are,

(05:29):
and you know it will leave and flow and he'll
do the who do his best job and fingers across
the tmos and everything else can stay out of it,
but these are the reality is that though something will
happen in the game, and so job will just keep
our boys focused and moving on to the next move
and the next player in the next the next sequence.
So hopefully we can take him out of it as
much as possible. But that's life here.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Thanks David. Think you're supposed to say you're going to
try and take the referee out, but there you go. Hey, discipline, discipline, discipline,
you know what it takes. Get in there, play hard
and play fair and enjoy yourself. David Hill, thanks very
much for your time.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
It's good Man, he says, are You're a chief support
appreciated support.
