The Mystics aren't fretting about a short turnaround between ANZ Premiership matches.

The northerners pipped the Magic on Monday to maintain second place on the ladder, and the defending champs meet the same opponent in Hamilton this afternoon.

Mystics Head Coach Tia Winikerei joined D’Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News talks'b Gilder.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
You've got the revenge on your hands, or maybe they've
got the revenge on your hands. How do you feel,
as the Mystics coach about taking on the same team
in consecutive weekends? Is that good? That happens a week
It doesn't at the competition.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Yeah, It's has its pros and cons to it. We've
got some good memories and things to bounce off that
we can apply quite quickly around what we would like
to do differently, just like they have.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Well, that's the big question. What do you need to change?
What do you want to do? Do you need to change anything?
What kind of tweaks? And what do you look at?
Because it was it was a low scoring game, wasn't it.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Yeah, it's it's not my favorite thing to look at
such a low scoring game. And to start with, I
suppose the things that I was really pleased with was defense,
Like our defense is outstanding. They got lots of all
and when I say defense, I actually mean the three
court Like all of the defense. I think we did
a really good job at disrupting their attacking line and

(01:14):
keeping them to thirty eight goals. They kept us to forty,
of course, which means their defense was very good also,
so what we I mean both teams will be looking
to have a much better performance on attack, and we
certainly will be and I would expect both teams to
be much better on a tack based on what we
put out on Monday.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah it was on Monday. It's the quick enough turnaround.
Although it's not like a contact sport, or most of
the time it isn't it should be okay, So I'd say,
and tell me if I'm wrong, magic were clumsy? How
much of that was you applying what you do to
them or how much of it was them just not
quite hitting their marks?

Speaker 4 (01:54):
Do you think? I think when you apply specific defensive
pressure and certain points of games and certain places that
you certainly see a much higher error rate. And I
think our defense did a great job in terms of
disrupting that and putting pressure on the attacking line. I
would also agree that they have their own unforced eers

(02:18):
that that may not have necessarily been attributed to one
thing that our defense did, but it could be a
culmination of pressure that's built across the game can often
cause those things, and we certainly experienced that against the defense.
That's why I'm saying that.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
When you look to your key players, who needs to
lift applying any pressure to any players to lead to
be that. I know Mickey Sockbeg sorry, mckade'm pizzin is
one of those. But are you looking to other players
to lift as well?

Speaker 4 (02:50):
To you? Yeah, We've We've got really strong player leadership
in my eyes and our team, and I Taylor, Petter
and McKey have have been the rock leaders of the
team now for a week. While Phoenix is obvious see
with us last year and after Phoenix left, Taylor's stepped
into that role. So Peter and McKey have been in

(03:12):
the Mystics a long time and they know what's expected
and their performance driven. So what always lean on those
three in terms of how they do their own roles
and what they give to everybody else on the court
to enable everybody else to do their role. So it's
important for me to make sure that they are on
the right page about what we want to do and

(03:33):
how we want to play.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Huge coach influence, You've got to make sure they know
what you know and want them to achieve. Comfortable with
that From a coach point of view, you are getting
that information out there.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
What do you mean, Well, you're.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Relying on these players to do this job, and they
need to know what's going on. But it's got to
come from you because you're the overarching You're the coach
or the manager, So your delivery, your application of what
you want from them is almost more important. Are you
comfortable that you're getting the message through to these plans
to you?

Speaker 4 (04:06):
Oh? I see what you're saying. Ye I. So we
pretty simple system at Mystics, and we try not to
over complicate things too much because too much information is
just too much information. And coaches and athletes are good
when they've got things as simple as possible, so they
are the best ones to if our messaging is clear.

(04:27):
But I can tell if our messaging is clear, if
we're able to execute what we've been asked to execute,
and when we're not executing it, that we can understand
how to change that quickly. So I think it's demonstrated
within the game whether or not that can or can't occur.
I think we hit some real good markers in the
last game in terms of how we applied some of

(04:49):
the principles that we planned it, but not all of them.
So we're mid season or we're in round six, we've
got to start consolidating what we've been working on since
we got together at the beginning of the preseason because
we're heading into the back end of the competition which
leads into finals.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
The ability see the players to actually understand and then
pivot as quick as they possibly can, that's huge. But
I suppose that sums up network, doesn't it. It's such
a high speed game where you've got to be changing
and constantly understanding where the energy is within the fixture,
so not only from player to player, but across the
game as a whole. It's a hugely important part, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yeah, And I mean we only get a few moments
to talk to them in a game. All the preparation's
done in training, and what we do in training is
what we try to put out on court, and I know,
depending on how we've trained that week, probably what's going
to happen in the game more. Yeah. So if you're
on point in training and we're understanding what we're going

(05:47):
to do, I can usually sense how well they understand
what they need to do and then it's just a
matter of applying that in the scenario, and the scenario
changes with every team that you play.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Mystics are southnon Glowbox and Hamilton's taking on the magic
and it's the return fixture after a very tight two
goal victory last week. Get it done again, Mystic sitting
second on the table, right at the top there with
the tactics. What are you doing? Whatever you're saying, we're shouting,
whether it's whispering, whether it's nothing at all, tear winny Coty,
it's obviously working.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
Good luck, Thank you appreciate it.
