Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News talksb.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Eight past eight. So yes, an eleven hours time kickoff
would have just taken place for the All Blacks against
France and Test number two in the nation's capital, Wellington.
A little bit of a damp day expected in the
capital for Test number two, no luxurious roof like they
had in Dunedin to play under today. So for the
All Blacks probably heading into Test two after a margin
(00:35):
that they would have loved to be far greater last weekend.
Obviously a few calls from the TMO didn't go their way,
but still I'm sure plenty of defensive work ons for
the team at training this week. For the French, I'm
sure a young team many debutants last weekend is celebrating
a job well done, a job where they pushed the
All Blacks and created some great open play opportunities. A
(00:58):
whole raft of other new players and debutantes to line
up for the French and Test number two and Wellington tonight. Obviously,
the last twenty four hours, the news has come out
that Caleb Clark, who had been named on the wing
to start, is out and ankle injury picked up at
training on Thursday, so Amori Nadawa from the Chiefs coming
into Debu on the right wing. Enrico Juani moves back
(01:21):
to the left wing to start for the All Blacks
Tonight's Earlier in the week, our rugby editor and Tonight's
match commentator Elliott Smith caught up with All Blacks full
back and last week's stand and winger Will Jordan to
look ahead to Test number two against France.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Well, Jordan has been this week as you're building too
the second Test?
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, it's been good.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
I think the first test you kind of have that
initial get together as a group and there's a lot
of learning and a lot of connections to be made,
and I guess now it's nice into the second test,
be a bit more clear and where our game's at
and have been an idea about what the French are
going to bring as well.
Speaker 4 (01:54):
So it's been good.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
Nice be out here in Anti CIEs we we can
really yeah, get nice and connected, to get tight in
the head into the city the savo and built for
the weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Do you feel a bit more cleric about the way
you want to play given you've had a game out
there Internedin.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Yeah, I think we're reasonably clear on the way we
want to play. It's probably just the execution of that
building connections. I thought, to be honest, I thought our
tech was pretty sharp on the weekend. I created a
lot of opportunities and yeah, I thought it was all there,
and something about interpassing between the backs and forwards was
probably the beast it's been over raises period that he's
been in. So just about sharpening that really potentially different
(02:29):
conditions this weekend, So just finding that balance between playing
the way we want to play, but also playing smartly
and applying pressure to him.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I think you entered the twenty two I think about
a dozen times, so that must give you the confidence
that you're on the right track if you can lights
to those opportunities.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Yeah, certainly.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
I think you know, thirty one points is a decent
horn a tess match.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
It was obviously up ten per under the roof.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
And yeah, if we've just been a little bit sharp
in a couple of areas and it would have been
a few more so. Yeah, lot the way we took
in that second half controlled territory when it got a
little bit tight, felt we were playing the game in
their half and that leads opportunities to play in their
tech zone and from there usually comes points. So so yeah,
it comes off the back of a good kicking game
and defense to allad exit well and then from their
(03:10):
ex kidding your attack.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
They clearly want to play the aerial game. How to
use a team adapt to that and with the conditions
not under the roof this week and what sky Statum
might bring this weekend.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Yeah, I personally love that.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
Yeah, it is a part of the game I really enjoy,
so looking forward to getting stuck into that this week.
In the past, I've probably kicked a little bit longer,
so maybe got the jumping us a little bit around
the contestiple game they bought on the weekend.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
So yeah, I think first is a back three.
Speaker 5 (03:37):
We're just going to own that a little bit bitter,
control their area, and then some stuff around. Yeah, Gouy's
getting around the ball for any loose balls and stuff
that pops up to making sure we're sharper to that.
I thought we'd just well enough in the second half
and did a bit of job of that, but struggled
in the first half. So there'll be plenty of coming
and what could be a pretty blustery night in Wellington,
so now look forward to that.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Obviously, you've got Rico and one wing this week on
the right and Caleb on the left. First you probably
played with them both on the wings. Does that change
anything for you and how you play it for back?
Speaker 5 (04:06):
Yeah, I think you just got to get connected and
work out different little tendencies.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
And where they play the game. I thought Calip had a.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
Great year for the AB's last year, really came back
into his own and yet we're in a real run.
So I've got a few rips with him on the
wing during that time, so I feel really come from
when that connection's ad And didn't get too much time
with Rex on the wing when I was at fullback
last week, but I've had a lot of training reps
the last couple of weeks, so just continuing to get
around him, work out what he needs from me and
(04:33):
what I need from him, and ultimately just try and.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Get them some good ball. Both guys a lot of
power and.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
Pace, So my job to hopefully put on their chests
and give some opportunities.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Does it have to be your job? You've have to
be recently adaptable, giving you played seventy nine minutes on
the right wing. Whatever a situation might arise in.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
The game, Yeah, I think so you want to prep
in Yeah, different spots. Going the event early wasn't something
I probably prepared for.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
But yeah, it gets to.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
The point now where I've played enough of wingan fallback
to be pretty semless between the two.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Probably took me.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
Ten minutes just to find the flow of it a
little bit last week, having played mostly fullback and super
but felt like I got there only well, so, yeah,
good chance that happens again later in the game. But
I guess the first and foremost hopefully now the role
the beck to start.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I'm not sure if you would have had a chance
to play with him at Tasman, but you would have
played against him to Marthy Tavia tub Now why getting
his opportunity? How big for him? And what have you
knownice about him since you've been in camp together as
all Blacks.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
Yeah, I remember when the last time I was really
in camping Tam was twenty twenty and he was coming
through then and he was a little bit smaller back then.
It was a bit more of the same build as Tevu.
But yeah, he's obviously really up his power game. I've
seen the way he's played for Tasman over the last
three or four years. I think he's actually got great
balance to his game, Like you see the power and
his ability to beat defenders, but strong in the air
(05:43):
as well. He's obviously gone to the midfield this year
more really strong over the ball, jackling and defensively. So
I think for him coming off the bench, she just
nescar and do his thing. Really played at his strength,
so I know he'll bring a lot of energy and
impetus for us, which is great off the point.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
And just finally, I guess this Fridge team, we've obviously
played them once. Now do you expect anything different this
weekend around the way that they might defend, attack, et cetera.
We talked about the aerial game, but you're expecting you
think different this week?
Speaker 5 (06:11):
Yeah, I think they'll definitely bring something different. Yeah, that's
way with the French. They are great at innovating and
they would have seen some opportunities when we played them
last week that they were adept to. So yeah, I'm
not going to stand here, you know, have all the
answers about hard the way they're going to play the game,
but I think you just got to be on the
front of your seat, have your eyes up and be
connected and just stale on mindset and just be quick
(06:32):
to adjust. So whether that's twenty minutes and seven a
quick combo about what they're doing, comms will come down
from the box and just find a way to null
fly whatever they're doing on the night.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
All the scores, all the stories, more questions, more scrutiny.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Against the All Sport Breakfast with Adam Cooper, News talk Z.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, well Jordan, they're all blacks. Well he can play
anywhere in the back three cards. He fall back named
for this weekend, but if it's anything like last week,
could have a fast and to add wing depending on
what else say happens. And you know, obviously a very
impressive showing by Will Jordan test number one and named
in that fullback position for tonight's Test and Wellington. And
(07:12):
of course that interview with Elliott was recorded just before
the news was released that Cada Clark is out after
getting his chance named in the team but a high
ankle injury suffered at training on Thursday. He has gone
and he won't be part of the rest of the series.
These last two tests, so it's given a chance quite
surprisingly to Ammanni Nadawa, you know, a standout for the
(07:34):
Chiefs through their super rugby, you know, impressive dominance over
the last few years. He'll start on the right wing
and I think maybe that's you know, made a little
bit more sense at the Koliwani as well, who's shifted
to the left wing, a position we're probably more familiar
seeing a mat than the right wing.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
It's a bit of a jigsaw puzzle that could have
its benefits in some way, but obviously it's probably not
the position the All Black selectors wanted to be and
having to bring in a morning Nadawa who was only
in the squad as wide a injury cover. So yeah,
but of a talking point ahead of tonight, we'll chat
more about that without All Star panel Ricky Swell and
Ross Bonds just after eight point thirty this morning as well.
But the kickoff is at seven oh five and the
(08:12):
live commentary will be right here on news Talk zed Be.
The build up will be from six pm, so we've
got your sorded for live commentary of the test in
at Wellington tonight and actually Jason pine will catch up
with him before nine, but he's doing his show from
a hot spot of Wellington on the waterfront that gets
very busy before big rugby games and big events, so
we'll chat to Piney about where you can find him
(08:32):
if you're listening in the Wellington region today as to
pop along and enjoy the build up to the big
double header at sky Stadium tonights.
