Front row Cheyenne Tuli-Fale has returned for the Auckland Premier Rugby Final, as two-time champions Ponsonby take on Marist in hopes of maintaining their winning streak.

She joined Adam Cooper for a chat about the growth and development of premier grade rugby over the season, and rising competition standards.

Tuli-Fale played for Blues Aupiki in the 2025 season and had a taste of the black jersey in the Black Ferns XV team facing the Black Ferns last weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Nineteen past seven here on the All Sport Breakfast. Great
to have your company this morning, and yeah, club rugby
right around the country, it's getting to that exciting stage.
A lot of champions are being crowned over the next
few weekends after all of the winter's competitions, and in
Auckland today someone will be holding the Coleman Shield a
bit later on today at Western Springs Park, two powerhouses

(00:32):
of Women's Club Rugby and Auckland going head to Head's
great rivalry between these two teams. Ponsonby and maris contesting
the final at two forty five this afternoon for supremacy
of Auckland's Club Rugby for the year. Ponsonby reigning champions
and going for a three peat though, so let's find
out how they're feeling about the final. And it's great

(00:53):
to be joined by well, very experienced rugby player Cheyenne
Tully Farley who's with us now and a week on
from playing in that Black Fans fifteen is joining the
Ponsonby front row for the final. Morning to her Chayenne
morning morning.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Our float to be here speaking about an unreal final
that's going to happen today. So thank you for.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Having me, No, thanks for your time, thanks for getting
up early for us. So tell us about firstly just
this rivalry between Ponts and Bey and Marist and what
you expect to play out today.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, it's definitely a rivalry between you know, the three
clubs has always been ponzib Rifles and Marit. We found
ourselves in a final between the two of them for
the last few years and there's always a special one
between Marist. We've got a lot of mates there but
as soon as we're on the field they behume just targets,

(01:45):
so we're excited.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Shane, You've had some great rugby moments this year. A
lot of people will remember that amazing try you scored
against against the Warritars for the Blues earlier this year.
You were also in the Black Fans fifteen game last week,
so it's been a busy rugby year for you on
the whole. But how nice is it getting back into
the Ponts Toby team and helping them out for a
big game like this.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah, it's it's so cool wearing the you know, wearing
a club jersey is always won my favorite jerseys to wear.
To be back home playing for Phillies, the culture is
unreal there, so it's always it's always an honor to
be stripping up in the Phillies jersey. Here.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
It feels good, great from your experience, when it gets
to finals, what is the key to sort of holding
on and staying in control of of really tight playoff
games like this one today for me?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
For I think for me it's sticking and staying in
our systems. So I know when it gets to the finals
for these and you know kind of feels like we
have to do all the fancy stuff and you know
someone needs to step up, But I think sticking to
our systems and just sticking to what we know throughout
the that we've done throughout the year, you know, our
shape forwards, kind of doing the mahi in the middle

(02:59):
before we send it out to the back. Just having
confidence in what we've done throughout the whole year and
not not having to do anything fancy or anything special,
because that's what's gotten us there is just doing the
real hard yards up the middle for our backs to
look pretty brilliant.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
I'm sure you do all the work as well, and
people do notice that tell us about Alloway's blackwell though
obviously we know the experience she has ex black Ferns.
She's captaining Ponsiby again today, obviously has led the club
to previous success. To tell us about her leadership and
how crucial it as having someone like her in this team.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, I think we're extremely lucky to have Alouise. She
brings a wealth of knowledge to our team. And when
I think of Alla, she is someone that gives back,
you know, tenfold to the team that she plays for.
She's all about service and on the field you just
kind of bringe on the field easy knowing that she's

(03:54):
there because you look up and you can't make that
ruck Ala will be there, or if you need someone
to talk to the rest, al will be there. Alla
does everything you need at moments you need her for.
So I feel extremely lucky to have as a teammate
and you know, just as a friend as well. So
we're very, very lucky to have them on the field.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Wonderful and I just want to get your thoughts saying
on on just the growth of women's rugby. Obviously this
is now you know, considered that the Coleman Shield a
big you know, this is one of the highly sought
after trophies and in club rugby across the country. But
since that World's cut being on New Zealand soil, how
how much have you seen rugby at a club level
at Aucktin grow?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Yeah, it has grown immensely. You know, a few years
we didn't even have I think only like three years
ago we didn't even have a development grade and this
year we've got ten women's rugby teams and the Development grade.
So the fact that that grade is thriving means that
the premier grade is going to have, you know, some
more competition and then you know, just I do a

(04:55):
lot of work in the junior development space. So seeing
more girls play rugby than netfil is kind of surreal.
My two little sisters, they both play rugby religiously and
prefer to check around a rugby ball than a you know,
a circle bar. So it is a lot different than
when I was growing up and just seeing the seeing

(05:16):
the growth you know, from young ages to now, it's
so cool.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah, also so cool, and I guess that will mean
you'll see a bit of a crowd along at Western
Springs today, I'm sure, Yeah, I hope.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
So, you know, Western Springs are the field of dreams.
We've got a nice stadium there which hopefully we're keeping on,
so I would would can definitely encourage. It's going to
be a battle, so definitely I feel like people should
be there. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Great, And just finally Shayed. You were in that Black
Ferns fifteen team last week for the game against the
Black Ferns. You were playing alongside and against a lot
of the players who are in that test against Australia
this afternoon and Wellington. What's the buzz like being in
that Black Fans camp and how to expect them to
go this afternoon.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
It was probably one of my favorite camps to be
in last week. The energy, you know, I thought it
was gonna be a lot of pure but it wasn't.
It was just, you know, kind of perform as you go.
The Black Friends are versing them. They are very strong bodies.
I honestly think it's going to be they're going to
be flying away with the game. Sylvia Brandt in particular

(06:22):
is operating in another level. Chris Vlik on the front row.
You don't want to meet her shoulders or just her
running at you. So I would be I would definitely
be very scared if I was coming up against a
full strength Blackman's team.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
All right, so look out Australia, is what you're saying.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Right, Yeah, that's all I want to say. Prepare yourself,
warm up nicely. Yeah, it's not going to be easy one.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Great hey Shan, great to chat. Really appreciate your time
and congratulations on all your your rugby seasons so far
and not all the best of you in the PONDSIB
team today in that final.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
I appreciate, appreciate the chat this morning. Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Have a good day you too, Sha, and thanks very much.
That is Shy and Turley fully there. She is a
front row of playing for Ponts of me today but
of course part of the Blue and Super Rugby Opicky
and I've been part of that black fan's wider setup
this year as well in a very big year World Cup. Yes,
I appreciate Shy and joining us here on the show
this morning, twenty six past seven here on the All
Sport Breakfast.
