Positive signs for the Black Caps with both bat and ball in their final T20 tri-series group game against Zimbabwe in Harare.

New Zealand claimed a 60-run win over the hosts, defending 190 for six by rolling Zimbabwe for 130, including four for 12 to spinner Ish Sodhi.

They’re looking to cap their so-far perfect run – a win cementing new coach Rob Walter’s first series at the helm.

Batter Daryl Mitchell joined D’Arcy Waldegrave from Zimbabwe for a chat.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Right, let's get amongst black Caps at South Africa International
Try Series final eleven o'clock tonight. It gets underway on
three now. Darryl Mitchell, I hope as part of the lineup,
but you never know.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Do I spuzzle? I'll ask him, but let's get amongst.
Good morning, Darryl.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Hey, Darcy, hi, very well, looking forward to the antics overnight.
It's going to be a late one but it'd be
worth it. They've got a final coming up against South
Africa on this tri series, which is an oddity in itself.
You weren't playing against Zimbabwe. I'm presuming you are going
to be suiting up for tonight's fixture.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Yeah, look, it's exciting. I think you know, we don't
get to play much Try series cricket, and I guess
as a kid for me growing up watching sort of
VB series and Try series like that, it's nice to
be part of one, be here in Zimbabwe and the place.
I personally haven't tour it as well, so looking forward
to it.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, are you going to be playing though? That's the
quest you had to rest last time out. Do you
think you're going to get back up again?

Speaker 4 (01:09):
I hope, so yeah, Look I'm not sure yet. Well
you've got training staff and then and we'll find out.
But yeah, i'd like to hope.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
I'm in the next sitting back and watching.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
I find it fascinating that there've been people saying, O,
I said, and he's on the A team, it's not
really the number one team. And I say, well, look
at the results, look at the players, look at what
they've been doing. I don't think there's anyone there who
thinks it is a secondary team. They all want positions
and they're fighting for them. And I think Tim Saife
it's the best example, isn't Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Look, I think anytime you play for New zealand's pretty
special and it's something we keep reminding ourselves as every
time you put on that furn you're gonna be very
grateful for every opportunity. So yeah, everyone's very proud to
be representing the Black Cats over here and looking forward
to tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Got to ask about Rob Walter. He's going well, isn't
he? He said? And drop the ball again. It's not a
bad way to start your coaching career. Yeah, look at something.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
He's fitted a nicely. He's a good man and he's
fitted them both on and off the field really well.
So it's good to have him part.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Of the group transition wise. Is there a major difference
you can tell yet between him and Gary Stead, who
was like they're on the tiller for such a long
and successful time.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Look, it's obviously only been early days, and I think
Rob's fitted in really well in terms of how he's operating,
and for us, there's not a lot of change and
how we're going about the big things. That's probably the
little detail and moving forward, how we want to prepare
and how we want to go about, especially in the
twenty stuff. So far, I guess he'll rub his own
flavor and as it goes. But yeah, so far, so good,

(02:38):
and really enjoying it.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
You look at the opposition coming up tonight in seed time,
taking on South Africa. Not that you fear anyone, but
when you look at that side, where are.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
The points of concern? Where do you go? Okay, we
better watch this fuller.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Look there they're a world class team. They're in the
twenty World Cup final a few years ago, so we
obviously know their strengths. They've got a very good bowling attack,
which also Africans do, and they've got some dangerous statter.
So look, I think for us it's more worrying about
if we can adapt to the conditions here in Zimbabwe
quicker than them and try and I guess keep trying
to find what to put pressure on with both bat

(03:15):
and ball will go a long way to trying to
win games.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Describe the conditions, what are they like?

Speaker 2 (03:19):
We've seen it on TV three over here, but when
you're on the ground short, it's different.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
What what's it like there? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Look, well I guess it's winter hear so for me,
apparently it's a bit warmer than what I'm seeing back
home and christ photos, so yeah, look it's the picture
to be honest, I didn't expect as much bounce as
what we what we got in the first few games,
and as the pictures are getting more tired and more used,
it's definitely starting to turn a little bit more and

(03:48):
it's on the slower side. So yeah, it's about finding
ways to keep trying to put them under pressure without
taking reckless risks because it can be challenging on these
types of surfaces so it's just trying to play smart
cricker and try and yeah, find ways to win little moments.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Great to see he said he's gone on string. It's
figures from that game against Zimbabwe were quite something. Else.
He's having a joyous time, isn't he.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, look, he's basically he's one of my best mates
and I'm really proud to see him, I guess to
have success. But also it's a different.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Role for him.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
He's bowling some different balls and probably what he used
to bowl is a traditional leg spinner, and it's cool
to see all his hard work paying off. And he's
looks like he's having good fun as well, which is cool.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, very important part of it. But I think with
all tweaker is the maturation of the game really evident.
And he sody he's worked so hard for so long.
He's weaving that magic and I don't know what in
the early thirties now, he's still absolutely got so much
more to offer.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, knowing heach, you'll probably want to play till heast sixty.
So he's still got a long way to go. And yeah,
he loves his craft and yeah, obviously bawling in the
power play and he's calling himself in the street spinner now,
So just really proud of all the hard work he's
done to create this opportunity and I'm sure there have
plenty of success for it.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Mystery. I love that.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I'm going to use that next time I talk to
him and yourself, Darryl, as far as look, you had
a bit of a rest, but you're happy enough with
what you're what you're providing.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Yeah, look, yeah, just loving plan. Obviously been a busy
period really when you think you've had the home summer
with champions trophies thrown in there, then straight to PSL,
straight to the MLC in America and here we are
now in Zimbabwe. So it's been full noise for the
last sort of ten months or so. But you're looking
forward to playing the final and then two Test matches,

(05:35):
which is always pretty special, and then get sort of
a month at home after that prepare for the home stummer.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
You absolutely needed. You must be missing your family, light mad, Darryl.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
I'm sure they'll be super keen to see you succeed
and then come back home again.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
No, I was lucky I had them in America, so
they thought they were Dallas cowboard cheerleaders for half of
that trip, so that was good fun. But it'll be
nice to nice to get home and see them nice.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Thank Darryl.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
D A r l is she she's the single digit
Daryl because there's too many rrs and ylls.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
And that's how I remember how to spell his name.
Do you care? I'm sorry I shared. I had to.
Darryl Mitchell should be performing tonight, you hope so. And
this has been pretty entertaining time but so fake.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
You can catch that from eleven o'clock tonight on three. Now,
let's see T twenty International Try Series fine within Black
Caps and South Africa.
