Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB seven nineteen.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
On the All Sport Breakfast, We've got an ice hacky
now the women's league. It's the n ZED Women's Ice
Hockey League. Today semi final action. Four teams involved, so
four plays one, two plays three and then tomorrow the
gold medal playoff are on. It's at the Dneian Ice Stadium.
We're joined by the Auckland Steel captain Jamie Jones.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Good morning, Jamie, good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
And this is what the season is all about. Get
into the finals weekend. It's all about what you can
do and it's got us right from the get go right.
It's the four teams in the comp You finished first
with Auckland and as a direct result, your award is
to play fourth place. But that's not exactly a reward
because it's not a pushover.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Is there no year Dunedin is no pushover at all?
I think the league is very even, so anyone can
come out and win the finals no matter what play
you are.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
And when you've got the home ice, is there an
advantage there? I suppose the players are sleeping in their
own beds there in their own communities.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
That's got to give you a bit of a leg up, surely.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Yeah. I think we are playing in Dunedin, so for
them it probably is a bit of a home advantage.
But I don't know for us is Auckland to travel like,
you know what you're there for. You're with your team,
you're not home, so you don't worry about every other thing.
It's kind of easier to take your home hat off
and put on your hockey hat. And yeah, is.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
It deliberate the way you prepare by taking on an
attitude like that into a way fixtures?
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Oh totally. You have to be. I think the amount
we travel and obviously we have lives outside of hockey
as well, and we've got other personal things we've got
to juggle. You just got to wear all these hats
and switch them accordingly.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, and you say, look, you know we've got jobs.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Of course you have. I mean you're not full time
forfere stills, are you. So that balance in itself is
something else.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Yeah, totally.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
I for everyone playing sport in New Zealand, you know
most of them have jobs. So yeah, I implored everyone
that plays sport at a really high level because they
probably have jobs.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Most of them do. It's only a few of the
luxurious ones at the top that don't. Actually Yeah, anyway, Hey,
so when you look ahead at the finals, plainy, you've
got to back yourself to do what you do and
do it well. But you've gottu breathing down your neck.
As far as points are consent, they've got to be
the most relevant opposession. I don't want to dismiss my
(02:43):
old hometown of Canterbury, but what could keep you with
the other ones?
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Aren't they?
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Yeah? Yeah, they came in very close to us with
just one point in it ending the regular season, and yeah,
they are a really great team. But I think we're
a really good team too. That's why we came first
this season.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
So yeah, and there's nothing wrong with the bit of swagger.
I like the way you talk, Jamie. It says what
you need well, you need to be confident of what
you've got and put a step forward. It's not a
particularly Keiwi thing to do, but it's a great attitude
I think.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Anyways, that's the way you.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
All roll totally. I think that's how the Auckland team
definitely rolls. We got a lot of experience. We've been
in this position a couple of times. We've gone into finals,
not in first place and still come out on top.
So yeah, we we do have a lot of experience,
and so I think we do walk the talk.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
You know, it's good to hear. We're talking to Jamie Jones.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
He's the captain of the Auckland at Steel, New Zealand's
New Zealand Women's Ice Hockey League. It's the finals weekend,
so what is it? Four v one, two v three
and in the final on Sunday?
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Yet, Yes, that's it simple.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
I like this because sometimes playoffs get really really complex
and me will kick confused.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
This is easy.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
What about your players? How are you looking? If you
got a full compliment? Is everyone fit ready to roll?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Oh, Hicky, they've been fitddle. We've had a pretty long season,
so we've had players dipping and out, but everyone has
come back for this final and they'll be raring to go.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
You say a long season.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Is this a long season or has it been a
long season or recently is it going to get long?
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Was there more expansion plans.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Or yeah, so this was the first year of our expansion,
so we've essentially doubled our league. So we went from
playing about four games I think regular season and now
we're Yeah, we're pretty much doubled. And that's why it's
been so long. The girls are getting used to that.
It's just as hockey grows in New Zealand, so does
(04:45):
our league have to grow, and we've just got to
go with it. We started in January, so it's been
a bit long already.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
And what about for the future.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Are there many other any teams out there that we
could join and maybe expand that league as far as
competition and teams are concerned.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Oh, yes, totally. There's talks about rents pop up all
over New Zealand all the time. Unfortunately there are any
rumors at the moment. Dunedin has a really small rink
and I know they really want to get their hands
on some full sized ice and I think as soon
as they do that, they'll be in our competition within
a couple of years. There's a lot of inline players
(05:24):
that are spread around the country that would have to
travel to like Auckland. Say if there was a rink
in Hamilton, immediately they would have a very strong ice
team because of the inline community that's down there, so yeah,
there's lots of places that can join.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Well, we know how expensive it is to play ice hockey,
to travel for ice hockey, so you're good at fundraising.
If anyone get themselves in New Ice has got to
be you guys, right, I hope.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
So we really are at capacity in Auckland. Though we
have the most rinks in our region, which is only two,
we really are at capacity. You know, we're starting to
train later and later or get up earlier and earlier
to find the ice time. So yeah, we would love
another rink.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Get up there, get amongst and bring home another title.
Jamie Jones, we thank you very much for your time
and wishing you the best for you and you steal
over the next couple of days.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Thanks for your time, Thank you very much.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
Yeah, let's go steal, Yeah, pinch it.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
It's not ready stealing dominant team. They are indeed two
ranks in Auckland.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Well worth going along to one out east, one out west.
Wishing them the best right the way through this, if
you want to watch it you can. You need to
go down to Dneed and if you're there already, I
