Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waltergrave from News Talk SEDB eighteen.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're talking here football now and we're going to Ross Haveland,
Orkland United played christ To United as the Chatham Cup
carries on, Ross joins us now whatever Ross morning. How
are we looking forward to the quarter finals of this
most historic competition over one hundred years as the Chatham Cup?

(00:33):
And you're now down to the point at the end
after well, you absolutely roasted last week, didn't your Malvel
got destroyed? What did you get out of that? What
was it? Seven zip? Seven to one?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, seven to one, Yeah, it was Yeah. I think
we just came out the blocks, firing and the clerk.
We've always been saying we've got, you know, such weapons
up front, so I think it's it's kind of been
coming that that someone was going to be on the
end of it, and unfortunately that was Malville.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
So scoring wise, that's fantastic, But what about the play itself,
the attitude of the players. Is that close to the
best performance in the Cup so farthest year for you guys?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, I think yeah, We've We've had quite a few
injuries this season and the team has been kind of
kind of changed quite a bit, so we're kind of
getting those those players back from from injury and the
squad's kind of, yeah, clicking a bit more now. So
I think, yeah, obviously in terms of yeah, how we played,

(01:35):
it was it was great and obviously great to score
some goals, but I think it's just just kind of
shows the depth and strength of the squad.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
So who's on their way back and when it comes
to removing people have done well and then the injured
returning players. That's always difficult from a manager's point of view,
isn't it. Even though you're assistant, you're not a big
boss man. But that's never easy.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah, no, it's never easy. But like, yeah, yeah, we've
said from the beginning that it takes a squad to
do well and compete, and you know, everyone has their
their moments within the season, so you know, when when
people are asked for, they deliver and that's kind of
what we need from the squad.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
And they're all happy to play the game.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, yeah, exactly, and that's that's kind of what you
sign up for, especially if you you know you're you're
a competitive team that want to you know, compete for
the National League and compete in the in the in
the Chatham Cup.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Christ Jets United. They're playing at home, which is a
boost to them absolutely. They've come off a recently comfortable
victory over Wanaka. What what do they bring to the pitch?

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, I think they're they're a well organized team. The
coach as well. Have they've been They've been doing really
well in their league. We know that they've got some
some weapons and strengths of their own. I think the
style of football they tried to players in a similar
way to how we try to play. So I'm expecting
it's going to be a tough contest.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
So describe that the way you guys both teams play.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, we like to obviously, we like to play an
attacking style obviously with with a lot of you know,
position counter attacking moments, you know, structurally in the in
the defending area where we're organized, high pressing and just yeah,

(03:27):
lots of energy as well.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
And you sitting out the back there making sure everything's
so okay, it's your form going. Because you're saying you're
a veteran player is probably a bit rude, but you're
not twenty one anymore. Aros.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, you're right, I'm not twenty one, so I yeah,
I tend to kind of all over and around at
the back. Nowadays, I don't. I don't do my signature
kind of a mazy runs anymore for the team. None,
I'm happy to do that.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well who called them signature? Was that you or someone else?

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Well, yeah, I won't say it with me.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
But and also taking that roll on and with the
assistant coaching role, this is something plain you're going to
move into that once you hang your boots out. That
is that combination comfortable for you to a better apply
your skills in both areas.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, I think it's It's definitely an area that I
want to kind of dive into after my playing career
is done. And I think, yeah, whilst being assistant and
playing is actually it provides its challenges and it's also
great to be to be learning off Jose's who's the

(04:41):
head coach at the moment, so he does he does
a fantastic job for us at the moment, just trying
to and he organizes a lot. And then I just
I'm happy to put in my input when it's when
it's needed.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Just be happy with lot Auckland United have provided across
a number of different competitions in the last six months
or so.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Yeah. Obviously our women's team of flying they're very successful
and have been for a few years now, so we're
just hoping that the men's team can kind of bring
some silverware to the table.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Well, just don't hope, go there, apply and get the
job done. Wishing you the best for that wonderful tournament.
The Chatham Cup over a century old, much older than you, fella,
so you can feel like a spring checking when you're
out there. Hey, thanks for yours you have a wonderful
day and look forward to talking to you again when
you're at the semi finals.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah, thanks mate, I appreciate your time.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
