Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
They're coming up right here right now on News TALKSZB
we are talking the rn Fairly Shield, the legendary log
of wood Rivers and Rahanna joins us as a man
who's picked himself up a Super Rugby title this year
and wow after Marty a rivez, what a what a
(00:33):
way to start the season A Shield chilenge?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Shh Yeah when it first come out, we're pretty excited.
O the boys up north here it pretty early on
and our calendar said it's a good good way to
start the season.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
The Shield Challenge, yep, well even better if you actually
win it. What's your involvement in rain Fairly? Should have
you played many fixtures at all or not?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
I've played in two before and I've been around. This
is my six year of NPC, so they don't come
around too often.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Night. How do you broach it? Because there's two schools
of thought, isn't there the one that's just a regular game,
it's about the championship, and the other school of thoughts
is man, it's the shield, who cares about the championship?
Where do you go sit.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I think we fit in the later stage. This is
pretty special for us. I don't think we've had it
since nineteen seventy something. I think it's been almost fifty years,
so it's definitely been a special week. I haven't really
touched on it too much, but you don't really need to.
The motivations, you know, it's already there.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Well, the coaching stuff probably don't. But you blokes muster,
you must have a wee chat about it from time
to time through training, going on a lord, it's a
shield time. There's got to be that energy.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Right, Yeah, one hundred percent. Like I said, we circle
this game pretty early on in calend Us, so there's
been a bit of a buzz even on the flight down,
these people wishing us good luck. So it's been pretty exciting.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
It's not about luck, it's about talent and application and
everything else. Right where do you fly? I mean it's
hard to know, isn't it. At the start of the
NPC where you actually sit. You look across, you're twenty three.
Where do you think is strong rivers?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I think we've done pretty well to get some some
reinforcements up front. Like I think this is one of
the most super agby represented team that we've we've put
across in the last few years that I've been here, definitely.
So we've got some good recruitments up front in the
in the Ford peck and then you know you got
the likes of solid JT at the back. Yeah, I
(02:32):
think we've got a good mix.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
He drives nuts by using nicknames Ala Marlo, I'm presuming
you're talking about just carry on mate, JT. Yes, and
Jordan's trainer there you go. Yeah, I need to pay
him coming fullback, isn't he? So these are so tell us,
tell us about your pack. They're going to give you
the platform that you need. Who are the who are
the call ups? Who's the cavalry?
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Yeah, so we've got Marcel he's come up. We've got
Jordan La he's come back home. And we've got a
few more of the blues boys who's come up and
bosted our Ford pack. James Mullens come up from Canterbury.
And then we've got some some boys who've played some
really good club and who have been in NBC the
last few years, have put the hand up like Collie.
(03:15):
He's another cult hero up there.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Matt Molds still floating around or not.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Matt Molds our skipper, So yeah, he's still there. He's
down at the Crusaders with me. So it's pretty special
to be playing in both these teams with him.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
He's a top unit. I love talking with Matt every
time I get him on, Like, this guy has put
down a home grassroots, is he not? You can't get
much more MPC than what Matt brings.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah, He's been around the world, been the UK, been
in America, and it's pretty cool to have him up
home leading us your drive.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Throughout this game plainly you've you've come off a successful
season worth the Crusaders. Where are you heading now? What
will the MPC provide you springboard wide? Do you know
what you're up to? Have been given any taps around
the next level up? Or Rob Penny? What's he talked
to you? About?
Speaker 3 (04:06):
What?
Speaker 2 (04:06):
What's your focus? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:08):
I caught it with Pittons after our season was done,
and I think he just wants me to come up
here and enjoy my footy. Yeah, I just stuff around
my game management. Being a ten, it's obviously a mess
apart of our game. So yeah, picking up some leadership
rolls up North here, Zombi's huge for I guess next
season with the Crusaders. I'm signed for next year, so yeah,
(04:30):
I'm just looking to have fun up here and hopefully
leave the boy as well.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
How do you carry the way to be expectation because
you've got a title behind you now and seeper rugby,
is there a bit more on it or I'm expecting
from talking to you, You're like, yeah, whatever, I'm just
going to carry home, playing code like normal.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah. To be honest, it hasn't even really sunk it
in yet. It was kind of just next campaign and
to the next one, so I guess it's just being
where my feet are and at the moment they were
the Tunnies, so I just want to focus on that.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Great to be home, mah must be a relief to
be in the warmer climbs.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Oh so good. I was talking to my partner last
week and it was minus three and cross shoots, so
it's definitely good to be up in the wintal North.
Even though it was pretty much a hurricane throughout the week.
That's pretty weir in Wendy, but definitely wasn't as cold
as down south.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
It's good warm, but wet and windy and what about
pad Naki? What do they bring Because they've got a
pretty loaded team as well, haven't they.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah, they're definitely loaded. They've been a quality side the
last couple of years. I feel like they're club players
are Yeah, they're really good. They'll be pushing on super
call ups. They've got a strong four pick and we
know they're going to be coming hard there. And then
they got some real skill out on the edges. I
think they've got those two feeteams running the march through preseason.
(05:44):
So if you're looking to contain them, hopefully.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Well it's his name, Tannian Rocudo, isn't it. One of
the Fijian imports there.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yeah, he's come over from the drawer. I think. Yeah,
he'll be a literc.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Well, it sounds like a pretty good replacement for Keetting
the Holler if you can actually replace a guy like that,
hate looking forward to it. Shield challenge in there, be carefree,
have fun, but also control the game and win, right right.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah, that's.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
That's good. You take instruction, well, Reviz, you've got a
future Rivers Revers Rivers, but Ahana, what a top bloke
on Matt molds too another living legend of the game.
This is tonight's pad a Naki and I didn't come
down the last shower either. There's a will you look
(06:34):
across the NPC there are some awesome teams, some amazing teams,
and you look to the dreaded Tasmin Muckle and you
look at their back line. I won't tell you what
it is look it up. Oh maybe I'll tell you
later in the piece. I don't know how on earth
(06:55):
they managed to collect that much talent in one back line.
If they've got half a forward pack, they're gonna be
unbeatable this year. That's another story though. Tonight at ten
past seven year of stadium in you Plum. You can
watch it on Tally or get real and listen to
the broadcast iHeartRadio. The Old Sport has it on Taranaki,
Be North and the Bunnings NPC.
