Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Ferns a couple of good performances so far in the
Tiny Jamison series. In fact that they've won it, that's
arguably a dead rubber. But the show me a sports
person that sees any international game as a dead game.
I say, who doesn't happen? It's all about competition. So
they won seventy seven to fifty one in Auckland, seventy
to fifty eight in Napier Sunday night in in Vericago,
(00:35):
the maddest netball fans in the nation looking for another
strong win. Constellation Cup, of course, is just around the corner.
Who the coaches? I got no idea. Why don't I
talk about that? I don't want to talk I want
to talk about I want to talk about the sport
itself and Silver Ferns defender captain last time around. Kelly
(00:55):
Jackson joins us now to look forward to that game.
Hey Kelly, Hello, how are you going very well? You'd
be looking forward to the third test to seal the
Tiny Jamison in that series, and after the chaos going
on behind the scenes, you must be all really happy
do actually be playing netball? What a release?
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, well, yeah, absolutely, we've been through a bit of
a saga. But I think for us as players, our
main job out there is to get out and court
and perform and really happy with the result so far
that we've been able to put out on court.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
What do you put those results down to? Because you
ran away with it in the first test, but it
was can I say, a little sloppy in the first
quarter of the last test? I mean he managed to
right the wrongs that actually I think you drove that,
didn't you get a turnover? And then suddenly things started
working after they went on a gee had a six
goal lead at that stage.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, yeah, so I guess. Yeah. Going into that first test,
you know, as we know, there was a lot going
on behind the scenes, but we just really just wanted
to focus in on the netball and as we did,
we trained really hard with some great trains leading.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Up to it.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
We've got a really solid core group of girls who
have been around this environment for a few years now
and we've played a lot of nepple together, so it's
up to us to leave from the front, I guess.
And when we got in that situation on Wednesday night
when we're down by a few, I was like, right, okay,
my job as a defender is to go out and
get this ball. And the only way to turn around
a disk is to get ball. So I'm glad we're
(02:23):
able to. I guess caral back that desks that within
the first.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Quarter, get ball and feed ball. It's interesting to see
what they're returning Toyava is all about in her operations
with this. Grace Petter is working really well in that space.
It's a lovely combo.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, she's doing an awesome job, but I'm leading that
checking in. I think, as we know, she's already got
a concolidated connection with Grace, having spent yews with her
at the Mystics, and you just see the trust they're
having each other. I swear sometimes she doesn't even look
at Grace to see if she's open. She just turns
and flings it. So you know they've got a huge
amount of trust between those two and it's just awesome
(03:01):
to see. And it's beautiful nickel.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Allo, the way it turns and flings it. I'm sure
it's a little more precise than that, but if it's
working it's working. Now You've had a situation with revolving captain.
See you've got to crack on Wednesday. How did that
treat you? Enjoy that role? Yeah? I love.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
I love leading the Scrivers my first time in that
role last year I had a few games advice behind
me and your own and yeah, I think it's a
really cool setup we've got going at the moment between
the four of us and my south Kate, Grace and Carton,
we're in the leadership group and it's kind of nice
to share the load, especially with everything going on. There's
a lot of weight on our shoulders at the moment,
so it's to be able to spread that and kind
(03:39):
of give each other turns. It's quite nice, you think.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
The preparation looking around to the Constellation Cup and as
you mentioned, bit of chaos in the background. We don't
know how it is going to go forward, but there's
a lot required to focus on that. You've been working
under a different coach Javette mccauls and jury. Is that
worked out? What are you going to be able to
carry on what you've packed up from a vent and
put that down come Constellation Cup time?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Well, first, I think of it's son a phenomenal job.
Think no one else would have done as good as
a job as her being able to come to the situation.
She just brings such a cool, cart collected head and
she just you know, breathed confidence into everyone and that's
just such an awesome feeling that going into consolation. But
we know it's going to be another step up. We're
(04:24):
going to really level up. We've got a week at
home next week and they were back together for another
week camp and prep for concups, so a lot of
netwill to go before we get set first testam etch
Fins Australia. But I think we're treating really well.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I've filled a came in Vuie Susie came in and debut.
She must be bouncing right now.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah yeah, I'm actually her roomy at the moment, So yeah,
really special moment for her the other night to debut,
and I think she's done an awesome job. She's really
earned her spot. I think she's had some great performances
with the Mystix over the years and also has that
connection with Peter and.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Grace and yourself in your role, w do you think
you need to lift and improve I read a great
thing about you just saying that Kelly Jackson is a
disruptive presence. Good to be caught on the court, right,
get in everyone's face.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Well, yeah, I guess until I got out there and
do I just want to be a bit of a
piece to the shooters and the feeders and get ball
from my team. But I think, you know, looking at
the game coming up, we would like to get ball
right throughout the court and work more at the units
and just you know, create for each other. And you know,
(05:35):
you always go out there to as much ball as
possible on defense and make the a checkers' lives as
hard as possible.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
It's the idea. And with South Africa made some improvements
planning in game two, game three, where do you see
them with room to move?
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, we've got a huge amount of respect for them.
I think we were we went to in what the
performance we put out in that first six s match,
but we were a little surprised with the margin we
were able to create over them and there were Yeah,
it was in the top five teams in the world,
so they're a quality side. They've got some quality athletes
to in the super leagues in England and over in
(06:13):
the comp in Australia, so they've got really good experience
and we knew that going into a second test that
that'd be able to make an improvement and as they did,
so we know that going into Sunday that they'll probably
make another step up and we've got to do exactly
the same.
