Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
But first and foremost, we're going to catch up with
the victorious skipper of the White Ferns. They got the
first win of the World Cup overnight through this morning.
They beat Bangladesh by a hundi. They were down my
thirty eight three quite early. They lost three wickets in

(00:32):
the space of a few runs, but Savie Devine and
brook Holiday saved the day. Maddie Green my birthday twin.
She helped them set up the total of two and
twenty seven for nine, and then the Ferns came out
and just ripped Bangladesh apart thirty three for six at

(00:52):
one stageikes. So Savie Devine joined us now hot hand
with a bat no doubt so far, and she's going
to tell us exactly how it worked out overnight in India.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
She's with us now. Gooday, So today, Dan's how are you?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Oh, I'm pretty good. Not as good as you. Of course,
you've finally managed to get that elusive when in the
Women's One Day International World Cup. I'd say relief would
be at the forefront of your mind. But I'm probably
wrong emotionally. What are the team colding right now?

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, I think probably relief is probably up there.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
To be honest with you, I think we've played good
cricket and patches, but it's just nice to finally get
across the line today. It was a really gritty performance
from the whole group. I thought the way Broke badded
was outstanding, and then with the ball everyone sort of
chipped in, and you know, I thought it was a
pretty complete performance. So fingers crossed now it sort of
sets us on our way.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
So two hundred and twenty seven for the last of nine.
At that stage, what was your gut feeling around what
had to happen. You'd seen the perch, you'd had a bait,
you scored sixty odds. Did you think it was going
to be okay to defend a bit of a challenge?
What were your processes moving into that.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Yeah, we probably spoke before the game even started that
we probably had to readjust what we sawt a winning
score on network at and we thought, you know, if
we could get around the two twenty two to thirty mark,
were certainly are competitive total, and I guess me and
Brock probably did go a bit slowly through the middle,
but we also knew that wickets in hand at the
end was going to be really key for us. So
the fact that we were able to build a solid
partnership there and slowly chip away at it, and then

(02:21):
to be able to have a couple of late cameos there,
you know, Maddy Green was outstanding leir to who who
you know in a hundredth game. Also, those sort of
runs are so valuable for us, so and anyway we
started with the ball to have them, you know, a
couple of wickets down early doors, it's always sort of
nice to work your way into that and then yet
to finish the job and finish up with one hundred
run win pretty pleasing for.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
The whole group.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Thirty five, first wicket goes down Georgia Plumber and then
suddenly Sugi Bates has gone. A couple of runs later,
Amelia goes There would have been a bit of tension
in the shed at that stage. An okay start, but
three wickets on the bounce stress unfortunately.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
It's been a bit of a common theme to the
start of this World Cup is that loves a couple
of early wickets. But I think we've all all known
that we've got some really good batting depth there and
that we're just going to have to knuckle in. I
think we back and trust everyone about our betters, and
when it's your daves just could absolutely knuckle down and
do the job for the group. So yeah, I guess
me and Brooke knew that going into the situation we

(03:19):
found ourselves in, and we knew the longer we could
stay out there, the better position would get the team into.
So well, you always want to have a dream start,
don't you, But that doesn't often happen, So it is
it's about adapting, adjusting and playing what's in front of you,
and that's certainly what I guess all the coaches that
have been speaking about is you just got to play
the conditions in front of you and also keep you
guys with the way that the group was able to
probably come out of that little hole that we found

(03:40):
ourselves in, losing a couple of early wickets, but to
get a total like we did, really really happy.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
The attitude around defending that total. You managed to chip
in toward the very start, and then it just carried
on collapsing for bungled desh, How do you impress that
upon them. Mate, I know that it's a turning wickets
down there. You've got to have that sort of out.
But it wasn't just the tweak, was it.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
No?

Speaker 4 (04:07):
And I think that's you know, the really pleasing thing
about the size. We've got different options. Obviously getting Rocco
Meyerbeck into the into the line up today and how
she bowled and her first spell was outstanding. You know,
she was able to move the ball off the pitch
and keep going at the stumps. And that's again a
really big theme for us in this bowling group is
we want to continue to take the stumps because these
wickets you know, are starting to deteriorate. So again, everyone

(04:29):
chipped in there, I think was great. You know, obviously
merely was able to tiden the screws a little bit.
But the way that lead to who who again, Jess
care When we build dots, pressure happens and things happen.
So again I thought it was a really good team
performance that different people stepped up at different times and
then you know the likes of the spinners being able
to and even you know Brook calla day coming in there.
I think it's really important for us that different people

(04:49):
are able to step up and do different jobs at
different phases through the game. It's it's going to hopefully
hold us in good steads throughout the tournament.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Rocco, Can I call her that too? That's great?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Yeah, absolutely, I su'll love it. Rock.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
We're joined by me, Sophie Devides. So what's your nickname,
Sophie and the team?

Speaker 4 (05:05):
What's my nickname? Yeah, you don't want to know. It's
usually pretty offensive.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Okay, fine, okay, this is really this is g rated radio.
So we wake up run that one as well. So
you're on your way now, and plainly you've still look
I was talking with Craig mcmillane a couple of days ago.
You want to just keep winning. There's no point in
just hoping you can win the next three of the
next four and get through. You've got to keep winning.
But your net run rate goes up after this victory,

(05:31):
and that's got to be something that gives you a
bit of comfort.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah, it does, I think.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
I guess that's a tricky thing about tournament play, though,
is you can sometimes get so focused on the net
run raid or the weather or what's happening in other
games that yes, you forget that you do this need
to win a game of cricket, and so for us
that's going to be a real focus for these next
however many games you've got, is the only game that
matters is the next one, So making sure that we
do the job there first and foremost. As you say,
you know, it's really nice to get the first points

(05:57):
on the board, and now it is it's about turning
our focus to that next game.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
In trilnca Verseral Anchor.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
So yeah, it is these sort of tournaments, you can
get distracted by a lot of the outside noise and
what's going on up and down the table. But for us,
we can only control what we can control. There's no
point stressing about whatever else happens, and for us, wins
are the most important thing.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
And last thing. How did the athletes come through? You
didn't get anyone broken up during that exchange? Did everyone's
fighting fit?

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (06:25):
From what I can see, I think everyone's going all
Right't me and Brooke, we're a bit crooked after that
betting innings.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
But you know, this is what all the hard work
that we've been putting in probably the.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Last nine twelve months of tooling away and the freezing
winter back home to be able to cope with the
sort of load and the heat and the oppressive condition.
So yeah, everyone looks like they've come through really well,
which is pleasing.
