Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB to.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
AUK that you have seen next. The A League season
number two for their men's team begins this weekend. They've
got Melbourne victory, bit of a grudge match after of
course Auckland eliminated by the victory in the playoffs last season.
So looking forward to chatting to Lachland Brook, who's joined
Auckland in the off season to be part of the
A League for quite some time on and off. He's

(00:33):
an Aussie player from Adelaide, played for a couple of
other A League teams, but he's actually joined the Auckland
set up from Major League Soccer in the US after
a stint there, so we'll chat to him ahead of
game one for them this weekend. Jeremy Marshall king out
of the Key. He's going to join us ahead of
their Pacific Championship butner against some more this weekend and
a great win for the Breakers last night as well

(00:55):
to get off the bottom of the table. They've got
another game to back it up with tomorrow, so we'll
head into their camp shortly and we'll wrap things up
by talking the issues of the sporting week with our
all star panel this morning. Joining us as Reuben Mama,
who you've heard on our sports news all morning so far,
and alongside him will be New Zealand Herald's sports journalist
to Alex Powell. So plenty to come this final hour

(01:16):
of the show as we get your set for your
sporting weekend, Let's talk A League football though it's resuming
for the twenty twenty five to twenty six season this weekend.
In round one, it was an historic run for Auckland
FC and their debut season last year, of course minor premiers,
winning that plate, but of course just falling at the
final hurdle. Before the Grand Final, they get the chance

(01:37):
for redemption that team that eliminated them from the playoffs
last season as their first up opponent away this evening
Melbourne victory. Let's get into the Auckland camp now and
joining us is new winger Lachland Brook who's joined the
A League and Auckland FC from Major League Soccer in
the United States. Lachland morning to you mate, and firstly,

(01:58):
have you settled into Auckland as you build up for
this campaign.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, it's been good quite an easy transition, to be honest.
Obviously I knew a few of the boys here and
knew a bit of the staff, so yeah, no, it
was a very easy transition. Obviously a bit closer to
home as well, so that's a big positive for myself.
But yeah, no, I'm enjoying it so far.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You did play a lot of A league football before
you went up to the States. What was your main
motivation to coming back down to the scene of the world.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
For me, it was a few things, to be honest.
For me, it was more about coming back to a
place where I can enjoy my football again, you know,
close to home, like I mentioned, and in a league
where I've played before and been successfuls That was obviously
a big part of it. And also just joining a
club that's new that's had success is quite exciting as well.

(02:48):
Obviously you don't really get the chance to do that
very often in your life, so yeah, it's very exciting.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
I'm sure you followed Auckland's amazing journey last year from
AFAR with a fair bit of interest, given yet your
history with the A League. What did you make of
the debut season as an observer?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yeah, it was very impressively. You know, I think when
there's a new team, you've obviously they've got no they've
got no prior history, so there's no expectation obviously as well,
and sometimes that can work in your favor obviously, but
they yeah, they've done really well and obviously the team
you know, it's not changed drastically as well, so hopefully

(03:25):
looking at to back that up again.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
And Auckland, you see it's a big squads, a lot
of competition for spots, especially those returnings from last year.
What is your strategy as you compete for the starting
a live in or selection in a match day squad?

Speaker 3 (03:40):
For me, I think no matter where I am is obviously,
you know, just every day give it one hundred percent
and you know, make sure you're doing the right things
and obviously if you're working hard, every single will then
lend well for you. Obviously there's you know, external factors
that sometimes you can't control, but yeah, not for me,
it's just work hard and enjoy what I'm doing and
hopefully the rest source itself out.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Lachland Brock can you Auckland FC squad member for the
new league season? Locklam? Just for Auckland fans listening, Where
do you see yourself positionally, how you feel your best
can fit into the Auckland lineup, and I guess how
you feel you can best enhance the team this year.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, so I'll play no majority right wing or as
a ten, so you can expect obviously I like to
get on the ball a lot and create a lot
of chances. Yeah, obviously can be quite aggressive as well,
which is a good good thing with the way that
we want to play. Obviously, quite an aggressive team like

(04:38):
to press a lot, so yeah, hopefully that can help
out in that way and obviously score some goals as well.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
And does that agressive mindset and style suits you and
what you've been used to with your previous teams. Yeah,
I think now the way football there is a lot
of teams are quite aggressive.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
I think that's just the way of the game at
the moment. But yeah, it's something that I've sort of
learned along the years, but something that I've always sort
of had in my game as well. So that's obviously
hopefully going to be highlighted this year.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
And opponents have now had a decent look at Aukland
FC how the team plays, and I'm sure gathered some
good ideas and often teams and their second year after
a breakout season can be shut down a bit more.
What is the mindset of the whole team approaching season
two and discussions around maintaining those strong results from last year.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
I think the majority of it's the same I think
last year maybe, I mean this is just a feeling
that I get that there wasn't as much football played,
is a little bit more direct, but we have been
working on playing a lot more football now and you know,
mixing it up, which is a good thing. Obviously, we
know that we can go directly we need to, but
switching it up and being unpredictable and playing as well,

(05:48):
I think that'll be a real strong suit for the season.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Lock when we know the World Cup is not far
away early next year. You've come through the Australian age
group system has been a key part of some of
those teams. Have you got ambitions to be heading to
North America next year with the Soccer Rus.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, I understand that was obviously a reason as well
to come back. I wanted to play as much games
as possible and you know, put my best foot forward.
So for me, obviously that's a goal, but I also
just want to have a good season and you know,
do things for myself as well, and obviously if I
do well, hopefully it can and work out for the better.
With that sort of stuff as well.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
And in away trip tonight against helping Victory to get
things under way, as in away game to start things
off sometimes beneficial. Just give the team a bit more
time to have some team building and time together on
the road.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, I think no matter where we are, to be honest,
I mean we're a quite tight knit group. I've fit
in very quickly. There's a lot of good lads, so
everyone's a good lad here, so they've made it very easy.
And yeah, like you said, traveling a lot. You know,
we spend a lot of time together and that's only
going to help on the pitch as well obviously. Okay,
we talk about you know, being a family and stuff.

(06:58):
So yeah, it's it's massive, you know, with all the travel.
I think that it's a it's a real benefit for us.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, I can only imagine there's a fair bit of
motivation for the team for this fixture, in particular given
for the guys returning from last season how things ended
in the playoffs last year to Melbourne victory.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Yeah, for sure. Obviously there's that added motivation as well.
You know, being round one, there's always going to be
a lot of motivation to start off well. But yeah,
like you said, with the way things ended last year,
definitely a bit more motivation and obviously quite personal for
a few of the lads and obviously for me being
a leader Nada fan, it's always personal against Melvin victory
for myself. So yeah, no, I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
And just before you go, Lachlan, you mentioned about enjoying
your football. How do you measure that? How do you
make sure you get enjoyment out of playing the game
week and week out?

Speaker 3 (07:47):
I think playing games and stuff and obviously the happier
you are, I think that translates to better performances as well.
I think when things are going well off the pitch
as well. You know, I'm close to home, I'm in
a familiar places. It's good, you know, I'm in the
similar times of going to my family and yeah, my
sister's pregnant at the moment, so a lot of good

(08:07):
things happening in around a family, which is very exciting.
So yeah, being close to home you know, it's only
going to help me to enjoy the football again and
like I said, obviously playing games as well, I was
going to contribute to that. So yeah, it's very exciting.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Yeah, brilliant Lochlin. Well, it's great to have you in
the country mates, and look forward to seeing what you're
off for Auckland FC this season. Thanks for chatting mattin
that go well from that season opening tonight, Thank you.
