Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Dancy
Waldegrave from News Talk sedb.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
England's Free Ashes cricket Tour of New Zealand. Is it
the halfway mark? Just one results from the three t
twenties England, one of them against the black Caps. They
were two abandoned due to rain. So can we hope
for better fortunes with the weather and the three upcoming
odiis which starts tomorrow at Mount Smongan Nui Will Mike
Lane as co founder of the beij Brigade of course

(00:34):
these days part of the Alternative Commentary collective which brings
you all the summer's cricket action over on iHeartRadio. Morning
to you, Mike, Now, did you expect anything more than
a bit of rained out cricket heading into this past month?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah? Yeah, I mean like October is traditionally quite variable,
isn't it In terms of the weather here in New Zealand.
You can either strike it lucky like we did. Remember
in two thousand and eleven during that Rugby World Cup
we had an outstanding October. It was one of the
best Octobers of all time. But this time not so
much and Unfortunately, this is probably the new normal in

(01:10):
terms of the international cricket window, given that January every
period is probably going to be full with either ICC
tournaments or something else. We're going to be pushed either
side of that. But hopefully I was thinking I'd prefer
in April as opposed to in October. I think October
might just be a tad too early. And it's a
real shame given the quality of the opposition being Australia

(01:31):
and England, two of the best Tea twenty teams in
the world, and unfortunately we didn't get to see a
full series of either.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, and I guess it's also a time, Mike, where
we are looking for that sort of you know, the
next in line in the Black Caps to carry on
the legacy of you know, the likes of Williamson and
the Southe's and the Wagoners in the future. We want
to see some consistent cricket at home, just to see
who is taking that mantle to the next level. Right.
We probably have been prevented from seeing that this lasted
a month or so, haven't we.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Yeah, yeah, a little bit. I mean it was great
to see Tim Robinson get that one hundred against Australia.
You know, that's a that's a pretty good fear that
I put in your cap, isn't it? One hundred against
Australia and teach twenty cricket. So that was quite pleasant
to see someone like that come through. Obviously, the bowling
stocks wise is a little bit of a concern without
O'Rourke there, without obviously Docky Ferguson there and a Melmount

(02:21):
injured as well. Obviously we've still got things like Glenn
Phillips's still injured as well, Alan is injured. It's kind
of they feel like we had our full squad, but
when we get our full squad together, it would be
relatively formidable. But we don't a lot of other teams.
Look at that England team, you know, that's fundamentally different
from their Test team and they can afford to They've

(02:42):
got the depths, they've got the kind of programs which
they can just roll in and roll out ODI teams
to twenty teams test teams. I just don't think we've
got the depths to do that. We just need to
basically wheel out our eleven best players, our eleven best
cricket players on the park for each and every format unfortunately.
But saying that, Kam Williamson, he's back tomorrow for the

(03:03):
Odie's great to see the great one back New Zealand's best,
kind of all round better as back in the team,
so hopefully he can kind of steady the ship as
he does.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Indeed, indeed, what is your sort of biggest area of
interest with with the one days now? I guess England
they've probably got half their mind now close to the
Ashes were with a few of them heading over to
that afterwards. The New Zealanders wanted to get some ODI
cricket under their belts as well. For you, what's the
sort of biggest aspect you'll be looking at for the series?

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah, oh, listen, it's I think it's You're right. It
is blooding new players. It's getting new players out there.
Obviously everyone's focused on the T twenty World Cup in India,
which is happening in January February, so odii's are kind
of taking a back seat slightly, but it is a
good opportunity to get out in the middle and give
some key experience you obviously give you know, Tim Robinson
another another good run there. Latham is back into the

(03:54):
squad as well. Yeah, I mean's funny with those in
these in these non ODII international kind of non World
Cup years, they're kind of put on the back burner
a bit, these these one days. But I'm I'll be
stoked to see Joe Root hopefully he's going to have
a run out in the one day team as well.
But I hope that we need to get a victory
on the board coops we have. We haven't won a

(04:16):
game at home get this summer, so it'd be good
to just actually just get to get a w on
the board, hopefully starting in tot long It tomorrow. But
I just I actually really love one day cricket. I
T twenty cricket. Obviously that's the you know, there's have
a lot of a lot of a lot of haters
on the hit and giggle aspect of T twenty, but
you can't deny that it's helped grow the game. But

(04:37):
I do love fifty over cricket in the terms so
that the ebbs and flows. It's almost an ebb and
fly of a Test match. You can lose early wicket
and rebuild and still set a decent target. You lose
early wickets and t twenty you're probably on the back
foot right from the start, one player and pretty much
swing the game, whereas in T twenty, I mean and
within one days. I really like the fact that you

(04:57):
can be in trouble and you can come back, or
you know you can, you can plot along and in
the last ten overs get one hundred and twenty and
get a good total. You're always in with a chance,
I think, with one day, as as opposed to T twenties,
which tend to be sometimes a little one sided, and
you kind of know the result, you know, well before
the end.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yeah, exactly right. Well, it gets on the way two
o'clock tomorrow. Hamilton joined the week and then to Wellington
next Saturday, and Mike, I know you and the ACC
crew and a few others will be familiar names to
our listeners on news talks it'd be will be staging
an event on Friday night next week in the Capital
before the game. And this is quite exciting, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah, Well, obviously we doing all the commentary all summer
live and free on iHeartRadio as always, but we've decided
to I mean, look like podcasting at the moment is
the hottest thing isn't it. But live podcasting and doing
a live at being apparently is quite cool, so we
kind of give it a hone and we've chosen Wellington
to give it a hone. On we are doing a
live a Gender podcast, which is our daily sports podcast,

(05:53):
and we're combining it with our by C Cricket podcast
which has got dyl and Cleaver and pull Forward on it,
and myself and Matt Heath will be there as well,
and we're doing a live podcast of the Gender and
BC down there from the Harbor Side Events Center next
to Shed twenty two from seven o'clock next Friday or
this Friday. If you want to come and join us.

(06:13):
If you're Dan Wellington, you know it's Halloween. It's a
Friday night. If you want to get away from any
Halloween admin didn't come along to our live podcast down there.
You can grab your tickets from the acc in z
dot com. They're twenty five bucks. You get a couple
of free drinks with that and instead of the ship
hat and a bunch of free bees as well. So
we'll be grilling Grant Elliott on stage. We have several

(06:34):
other guests as well, so should be a good time.
I'm not sure how it's going to go. Could go
either way.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Ah, well, you guys at the album, there's there's no
question or to go. Well, won't it It'll be chaos.
It'll be chaos and best you recommend that people get
their tickets in advance.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Mate, Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, There'll be no door sales, so
get them, get them in an advance. You can text acc
to three two three six. We'll get a direct link
to those tickets, but you get your money back and
drinks and merch anyway, So be worth coming along on
a Friday night before the third od I, third and final,
hopefully the decider down there in Wellington.
