Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk S'B.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
First and foremost, we're going to talk more cricket because
it is summer after all. In Nelson, the North of
the South t twenty series is being played. It's a
best of three series between the top domestic talent in
women's cricket across the North Island and the South Island.
The South Island women won the first game. The North
Island has won this second game. It was rain effected

(00:33):
in close, so it sets up what you can only
describe as a very exciting conclusion. Set to get underwaight
eleven o'clock this morning. We're joined now by Polly Engles
White Ferner and represented of t y Ponami. That's the
South Island side. Chez going listener, how it's going and
talk to us about the game later this morning. Good morning, Polly,

(00:55):
good morning, how are you? I'm good. You're in the
thick of a three day tournament right now, South Island v.
North Island. Tell me exactly what this tournament is. I
found about it a few days ago. Again, what's this?
What's going on? So lay it on the line. What
are you doing poly, Yeah, I guess.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
So three years ago we started up Northwest South again
and I guess it's been an opportunity to get the
kind of best domestic players from the North and from
the South together to play in a three match series.
So last year it was fifty over Stuff to lead
into the fifty over World Cup. You're playing some two twenties,
so yeah, just a really coo opportunity to play a

(01:35):
little bit of a higher level of cricket. Yeah, it's
been great.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Just before Christmas sets commitment for you. Yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Luckily I'm not a big gift giver, so not getting
too down on my Christmas shopping. But now it's cool
because it's right before Super Smash, so it's called ever
head out and some girls that have put their hand
up from each from our fifty over stuff have kind
of got some selection here and then getting a good
head out before Super Smash starts to stuffter Christmas.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
What's the level of competition, Like a lot of Ferns
involved in their so yeah, yeah, okay, good, yeah, yeah yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Most of the White friends are playing bar sort of
a few injuries and a couple wristed. So for South
We've got myself, Bella James and Lea to huho, and
then the North have too many to name probably, but yeah,
some really good talent and some up and some young
up and comers as well, which is cool.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Lea too, who is an absolute weapon. Great to have
someone like that on your side. I have never talked
to a cricketer before who refuses to take a backward stick.
Doesn't matter what happens to you. She's got a fight
to the bitter end. Must be great giving someone like
that on your side.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, yeah, well, ADMT, it's nice to play with these
girls instead of against them for a bit. We had
as you sharp, whacking it to all parts of the
ground a couple of days ago. So yeah, I said
to afterwards, I'm pretty glad you're on my teeth today.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
City Bait's not around. She's given up on you.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
No, no, Unfortunately she picked up an injury in the
first round of the fifty over stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
So okay, and I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm not throwing
shady if you're listening, soasy, really I'm not. You know,
I'm a beach so when when you look, that obviously
means there's a high quality of competition here there. You're
not get for fun, are you?

Speaker 3 (03:19):
No, not at all, and the South haven't won it yet,
so it's it's one all at the moment. So heading
into today it's it's been some really competitive cricket. Unfortunately
the Rain won yesterday and we one ball lease and
we might have taken the series. But it's just the
way cricket can be sometimes.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
It was a really close run thing, wasn't it Friday's match?

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, rained a little heavier one one ball, but Flora
managed to had a four and then they went ahead
on the duckworth and off we came.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
It's to stop a cricket, isn't it something as a
cricket you've got to deal with because you're never really
quite sure what the weather is going to be and
what the equation is either are there are lots of
crumble bits of paper around with various equations about what
you have to get.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Oh yeah, for sure, but not enough there's anyone that
quite understands the dallis. So yeah, we'll make it off
as we go along and just keep trying to win
the game.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
I guess it's a great place to get up close
in person. The players. I'm presuming whereabouts you playing.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
We're in Nelson, so yeah, surprising that it rained today, really,
but yeah, it's great place to play cricket. We've actually
had quite a few people down on the banks watching,
which has been awesome. And it's been a great, great
de of some high scoring games, which was cool to see.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
I mentioned in the lead up to this interview, and
I don't want to sound like I'm age shaming, because
I can't because I'm so old myself. But you're only
your recent addition to the White Ferns and your twenty
nine years of age. Are you like a lot of
the Black Caps who are now getting selected older and
now they know exactly what their game is so when

(04:57):
they turn up it is a finished product? But is
that a fair thing to say?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
I'm not so sure about finished product, but I guess yeah.
I've played domestic cricket for a long time now and
been through some pretty tough times with the Sparks not
winning too many games. But I guess every every one
of those, you know, helps you learn, and you've been
in a lot of different situations, So yeah, I guess
I feel pretty confident in the way that I plan

(05:23):
I guess lots of people would say it's pretty odd
for the way I play, But.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Why is it odd you can't throw that? I may
not answer it, why are you are?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
I guess I have a hockey background and some people
would say my swing is a little unorthodox on the
cricket field. But yeah, I managed to kind of hit
some weird areas of the field and often get how
the how did you get that there? And I think, question,
but it's gone there, So.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Get a monk do it for the South because born
and bred man from the finest place in the world.
And so I'm even though I've lived up here in
my life, I'm fully supporting you get in there cause
of rukis and go.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Well.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Lovely to meet you, Polly. You have a wonderful Christmas.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Thank you so much.
