Speaker 1 (00:00):
What an incredible organization Hoover Helps is, and joining us
from that organization, Greg Bishop and also Debbie Mahr in
the studio with us. Greg, I know Paul was kind
of stuck in that rack out there on sixty five.
You were really stuck in that mess out there. So
hold on, let me get your microphone on. There you go.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
I was right behind it, and luckily they were clearing
it up right as I came.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
By, so you were You're okay, I'm glad. Everything's good. Yep,
you got here and everything's wonderful. Yep. All right. Well,
let's talk about what this is all about. Debbie. You've
been involved in Hoover Helps for.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
How long though, It's been about seven years from.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
The beginning just about, So let's tell everybody what it is.
For those that are not familiar with Hoover Help does.
It's all about the.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Kids, all about the kids.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
So we work to fight food insecurity with kids in
the city of Hoover and also work very hard to
ensure that the basic needs of all kids are met.
So we work in coordination with the school counselors at
all seventeen schools. They know if they find a need
with a child that is preventing them from their success.
They reach out to us and we do what we
(00:59):
can to help.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
You know, you would think in areas like Hoover and
Vestavian Homewood and over the Mountain and even Trustful in Gardendale,
in suburbs around the Birmingham area, you would think that
there wouldn't have any really major problem with kids getting fed.
But you know, the schools help out with their breakfast
programs and lunch programs, but on weekends and in holidays
and summers when kids are out, I mean, there's a
(01:20):
lot of kids that are really struggling with this.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
There are a lot of kids that are really struggling.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
You know, we have over five hundred students in our
backpack program and we handle it really discreetly. So there's
kids that just don't have enough food to make it
through the weekend. So we ensure that, you know, bags
are discreetly placed in their backpacks with some non perishable
foods that they can take home for the weekend and
make sure that they're okay.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Well, Greg, you were part of this at the beginning. Obviously,
you and your wife Dona kind of ramped it up
and got it going from I guess a program that
was going on in Ohio with David Vanister kind of
bringing up the idea here. My wife was actually talking
about this at one point before all of that. She
drove Hoover City school bus for seventeen years and back
before this got started. I don't know how you guys
(02:04):
got it going and pushed it through, but she presented
the idea and they said, well, you're really getting into
people's personal lives and you don't want to, you know,
embarrass people. And to get that done, it's going to
take you going to have to move a mountain to
get it going. What changed and got this moving in
the right direction.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Well, we were blessed to have a couple of faith
based organizations that were already doing the backpack program. Green
Valley Church and Bluff Park United Methodists were already doing
a backpack program and we simply came in and replicated it.
So now we work with thirteen different faith based organizations
and they are so generous and so blessed that you know,
(02:43):
they do most of the heavy lifting. Okay, they buy
and packed food, deliver food, and we help with funding
when when necessary.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
So how can people be a part of this. The website,
you know, can they check it out on social media?
Where do they go to find out more about this
and how to be a part of helping these kids?
