Speaker 1 (00:00):
John Mounts. I'm filling in for JT. And we've been
talking about the uh, the shooting that happened in Minneapolis,
and again, our hearts go out to the families who
have lost children, families who have children in the hospital.
And of course the debate that rages on is over
the man. And yes, I know that's not politically correct
for me to call him a man because he'd like

(00:20):
to be called a woman. But well, he's dead now,
so I'm going to keep calling him Robert, Robert, not Robin.
Joining me?

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Now?

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Is Duvalier in me? First of all, say dou Vlier.
That is a very unique first name. I've never heard
of a Douvalier.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
It is actually a du Valier. So is du Vallier Malone?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Du valliero Vallilon? Yes, yes, so du Vallier Malone. This
debate that we have sparked is interesting over the the
transgender situation, because this is not the first or second
or fifth shooting by somebody who is transgender. And when
you start to notice a pattern, you begin to ask yourself,

(00:59):
why is there anything to this?

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I think that we really have to refocus the conversation
not on the gender or ideology or religion of an individual,
but really go three layers deep under the gun crisis
that we have sawt in America. Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Time and time again, we see that politicians like to
turn this into a political debate. Right the headline today
we're talking about a transgender versus talking about the true
issue at hand, and that is a common sense gunn
reform that is needed in America and is needed now.

(01:43):
We saw young kids. We saw young kids, let me finish.
We saw young kids crying. We saw young kids coming
out having to defend themselves. We had young kids that
were protecting their their their classmates and they said, we
only do not do this, uh drill in the chapel.

(02:04):
These young kids were praying. They it is a shame
that all school systems have become a war zone and
politicians want to turn this political. Well, since gun reform
at and it's time for it now.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Well, you said you don't want it political, but gun
control is political, and by the fact that we're talking
about it, it means it's a political issue. And the
the the question is what gun control would you propose
that would have prevented this.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
We need to have a cumbaissance legislation that it's passed
where we take these type of weapons off the streets.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Weapons. So when we no, no, you're reading talking points,
what kind what type of weapons are we talking about?

Speaker 2 (02:49):
So when we talk about when we talk about these
guns that these individuals are using to come into these schools, right, Uh,
these are weapons of war?

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Getting No, you said weapons of war? What weapons of war?
He had three weapons?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Right?

Speaker 1 (03:05):
He had a handgun, he had a rifle, he had
a shotgun, which one of those is a weapon of war.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I think when we think about gun controlling this country,
when we look at it, I believe that we should
remove assault style weapons, right, high capacity magazine weapons, ghats weapons,
right for the automatic weapons. All of these should be
removed off of the streets of America.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Well okay, all right, let me take another attack here, pragmatically,
how do you propose they're on the streets. How do
you propose removed? Because already a lot of those things
are illegal. The law didn't actually stop doesn't stop people
from who are already doing illegal things. I mean, we've
are I mean what again, say we need to make
murder illegal? It is illegal. A lot of these guns
are illegal. They're still out there. So what legal thing

(03:58):
would you do to better protect people from gun violence.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
I would do incentives to have these guns returned to
the government. Right, we've seen other nations and play.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Well, they didn't. You can't return them. They didn't come
from the government. You're talking about a gun back.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
But we could write we can do a gun buy
back program to try and get some of those guns
off the street.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Will that work?

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Also, if you have purchased, if you have el because
you illegally purchased a gun, right you paid you know,
five hundred dollars for a go and no serial number,
whatever it is. Would you then say, well, I'm willing
to turn this gun back in for one hundred dollars.
That's not gonna work. Usually, these gun back back programs,
they are done, and what happens is they get back
junk guns. They get back guns that don't work anyway,
because people are all too happy to turn in a

(04:43):
broken gun and get a hundred bucks. Ago there I
turn in a gun. It doesn't stop.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Crying, I think, but I do think it starts the process.
I also think that we need to also look at
some of the mental health programs that we have in
this country, strengthening those programs, having access to those programs
for individuals. And I think it comes back to really

(05:08):
us as a country leaders really starting to shine a
light on this. You you asked me a rated questions
and there's not a right or wrong answer to this.
We if we had the solution to this issue, we
wouldn't saw what happened this week in Minnesota. But I
think what has to happen is we have to start
having a stronger conversation. It cannot be where kids are

(05:31):
killed today and we're back to a headline tomorrow. We
really have to start coming together as a community as
a country and start really talking to the American people
to determine one of their views and how do they
want to move forward with this issue. And when we
look at the poland many Americans, most Americans want a

(05:53):
common sense gun control legislation.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
I gotta I gotta stop you there, because I don't
I don't know that most Americans do. I agree, we
want common sense, but common sense just means common sense,
but that doesn't actually mean anything from a realistic standpoint.
What people want is I agree, we want less killing.
Nobody wants children to be killed nobody wants children to
be killed in any circumstance, and what happened was a
terrible tragedy. But we can't make the knee jerk reaction

(06:19):
of blame the guns, and we need all the guns
confiscated because first of all, it won't work, and second
of all it's it's not even pragmatic. It can't work.
And so for all those reasons, Duvalier, I've got to say,
I have never disagreed with a guest on this show
more than I have disagreed with you. But thank you
so much for your time, thank you for joining us

(06:39):
on Alabama's Morning News. If anyone would like to weigh
in disagree, leave us a talk back message or give
us a call.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Boy.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
We have kicked over a horn's nest with that last guest.
I expected we would. We've got callers coming in. Mark
out in Hoover, welcome to the show.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Good morning, John. I appreciate and support and command your
response to the previous guest. You were more common sense
than he was, and particularly the response to these weapons
of war foolishness that we hear so often. So I
just want to commend you. And on another note, I
mean I think that there will be many people in

(07:13):
agreement with me there. But on another note, I had
no idea that Michael Barry knew you. He says good
things about you, and he knows all the cool kids
I met.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Michael. I actually brought the show to Burke not to
rag on myself. I'm the regularly I'm usual to the
program director for this radio station. So I heard Michael
Berry on in Houston on KTRH years ago when I
was looking for a show to replace. I don't know
if you remember the Schnitz Show we used to run
on the show the station.

Speaker 4 (07:37):
But I do. I didn't like it much now no one.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Else did either. So I was looking for a better
show to replace the Schnitz Show with and I found
Michael Berry and said, this is perfect. So when I
called him up, he was so nice. He sent me
a Peacan pie and he said how much you wanted
to be on WRSA, And I said, hey, I would
love to have you. And I have to say that
I'm not proud of many decisions I've made in this business,

(07:59):
but I am really proud that I was able to
bring Michael to Birmingham. Whether you like him or not,
I think he is going to be the future of
talk radio.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
Hey sent and else. I've turned on a lot of
people to your radio station just by him alone. So anyway,
but listen, I know that you are often underappreciated. I
totally support and appreciate what you did with our previous guest.
You weren't rude, but you didn't take any of his
foolishness either. So well done, sir.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
I'll let it well. Thank you very much.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Mark.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
I will let them talk.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
I will.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
I'm not going to cut them off. But at the
same time, I can't, like you said, I can't allow
them to be foolish for any extended amount of time.
If nothing else, it creates a great opportunity to have
a great conversation. Rush Limbaugh once said, the purpose of
the caller is only there to make the host look good,
or I guess I can say, in my case, to
make the radio station look good. To bring great conversations.

(08:48):
And I thought that Duvalier did a great job of
giving us something to talk about. Here is one of
our listeners. They left us a talkback message. I don't
approve of the tone, but I appreciate the sentiment that.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
Devar railroad lander is an idiot. Why would y'all even
have some trans lover even being interviewed on gun control?

Speaker 1 (09:16):
To answer your question, the reason we had him on
quite frankly, we get a guest pitch list from Fox
News Radio. Here are the guests that we have, and
I think they had to make a pivot because they
changed out the guests that we're going to have on
the topic. And the information I had was we were
going to talk about the about the transsexual issue with
this thing, and it became about gun control. I don't know,

(09:37):
I don't know why that got switched, but like I said,
it was an interesting conversation. So yes, that that is
why we ended up talking to Duvalier. And that is
probably the first and last Duvalier, however he wants to
say his name, That's the first and probably last time
we'll hear from him. Uh, thank you so much for listening.
We have to go after the next break, we're going
to continue the conversation because we've got more Uh uh

(09:59):
we did you want to say something? You're pointing at
your microphone.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
I was letting you know that we have another talk
back mic as well.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Is it good?

Speaker 3 (10:05):
Yeah, it's finally good.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
All right, Hell, I'm all right. Mackenzie is like the
DJ with the talkback MIC's play.

Speaker 5 (10:11):
Getting rid of guns. For somebody using a gun, it's
mentally unstable. It's like having somebody mentally unstable using a car,
or to kill twenty people. Then we're gonna just band
all cars. If somebody uses a knife and kills ten people,
we're gonna get rid of all knives. We're gonna get
rid of hammer. Or somebody kills a bunch of people

(10:31):
with a hammer. Use some common sense. Guns don't kill people.
People kill people, don't matter.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
How, And that isn't that funny? They always use the
word common sense gun They attach the word common sense
gun control as if it makes it common sense because
I put the word because everyone's a great look I
no one is a bigger fan of common sense than me.
I want common sense, But then you can't attach it
to gun control and make it and make that a
valid argument. I don't want crazy gun control, I want
common sense gun control. Well, what does that actually look like?

(10:58):
No one has a good answer for that. They just
want to take the guns away. And when you take
the guns away, when guns are illegal, only illegals have guns,
you know. I guess that's I know it's talking points
from the NRA, but it's kind of true. It's seven
poin forty. We're long for this break. I'm John Mouse.
Keep the calls coming in. I'd love to continue the
conversation about this. This has been a great show.
