Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now is Eban Brown also to talk about
the situation out in Texas and Eban, I know it's
looking pretty grim in the way of search at this
point is basically recovery, right.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
No, the search is still ongoing. They're hoping to still
find you know, survivors. At some point they'll make a
more formal change into a recovery mode, but they're still
hoping that they will find people. They're searching through debris
fields now at this point. Often this requires the use
of heavy machinery to lift up piles of you know,

(00:36):
wood and tree trunks and things like that, because the
floods have just ravaged everything and have deposited debris all
over the place. But there is some hope that they
might find people alive. One hundred and I think twenty
so are dead and there are still I think looking
for about one hundred and seventy people who are unaccounted for,

(00:57):
and so you know, there could be a mirrors and
I think that's what they're hold holding out for.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
And with those who are missing, is it's also possible
that they were just they're accounted for because they got
somewhere safe and they hadn't really called in so to speak.
So they're on a list of people who we haven't
been able to locate, But it doesn't necessarily mean that
they're correct.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
That that is always possible that they have left the area,
they have not checked in with people, and that they
are you know, hopefully okay, they're just out of contact
for some reason, and you know that'll get sorted out
as time goes on, of course.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
And with a meanwhile, what's going on out there? Unfortunately,
we've already gone to the blame game, and there's of
course some of this you want to diagnosed to see
what we could have done better. Other things. I think
it's just being turned into it's the fault of this
person for not getting the warnings out faster. They've blamed
the National Weather Service, they've blamed the sheriff, they've blamed
Donald Trump, the camp. Everybody is kind of getting blamed

(01:56):
in this situation. But I'm hoping there's going to be
some productive common oversations as to what can be done
as well.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
There should be and there will be, and you know,
I guess in the future when there's a good amount
of data to pour through and reconstruct timelines and whatnot
and try to come up with them with the better
way of doing business. In the meantime, the concentration should
really be on the search and rescue efforts, because that's
what is ongoing. You know, the local officials in Kirk County, Texas.

(02:25):
I've been holding daily press briefings, and not yesterday, but
two days ago, there was some wise guy reporter who
just kept shouting questions, angry questions in an angry tone
at the I believe it was the mayor or the
city manager. I can't remember exactly who it was, but
this is someone who himself was you know, had undergone
tragedy in the past five days. Is his community that's

(02:46):
been devastated, and there he was trying to give out
some solid information and then he was being constantly harangued
and up, you know, interrupted by this quite frankly, this
awful human being pretending to be a reporter. And so
you know, if there's you want to know why people
hate the press, it's because of people like that. And anyhow,
it doesn't really accomplish anything other than to maybe get

(03:09):
a viral moment or a SoundBite for an evening newscast,
to make someone who's already trying to do their job
as an elected official while at the same time deal
with a tragedy in their personal life and probably be grieving.
All you did was embarrass them needlessly, and that's why
the press stinks. So here here we are dealing with that,

(03:33):
and that's not very helpful. The press at this point
should be asking thoughtful questions that encourage the elected officials
to divulge actual, real hard information about what is happening
at the moment and what the public can do in
these early days post tragedy. And then the investigative part,

(03:56):
you know, that comes later when more appropriate.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
And Eben, I know you, and you're you're above the
fray on that sort. That's the reason when I think
journalistic ethics, I think Eben Brown Evin, thank you so
much for joining us this morning on Alabama's Morning News
