Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is John Mounts filling in for JT. And when
I first heard the news of Alligator Alcatraz, the first
thing I thought to myself because I lived for a
while down in South Florida, actually Southwest Florida, and I
know how everyone gets really really wound up about the environment,
especially the everglades down there, and so when they started
talking about using a facility in the middle of the

(00:21):
everglass the first thing I thought was, I'll bet the
environmentalists are not going to like this. And I guess
it took a minute, but that's caught up with them.
Joining me now is Evan Brown Live from Miami, and
Evan lawmakers are going to tour Alligator Alcatraz today and
I guess they might share some of the same concerns.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Good morning, Well they might, I think the concerns of
the lawmakers who would be taking a tour that tours tomorrow,
by the way, if they show up for it, I
is a concern for the conditions that migrants will be
housed in. There is a growing swell of people who
say that this is deplorable conditions for them. I would

(01:00):
say that is not the case that if your frame
of reference by the way as a Manhattan five star hotel. Yes,
this is not going to be as nice, but this
is a facility that is a detention facility for criminal migrants,
people who are not necessarily just here illegally, but who
have also committed other horrible things, things like murder, things
like rape, things like child trafficking, things like drug running,

(01:24):
things like terrorism. These are people who will be slated
for deportation and they will be held at a facility
like this that happens to be very remote, that has
the ability to shelter people, excuse me, with the climate
controlled facilities, to take care of medical needs, to keep

(01:45):
them in hygienic conditions, meaning they have access to clean water,
and they're there temporarily before they're deported. So that's what
this facility is. Now the same group of Democratic Florida
state lawmakers who said that they wanted to see the
facility or saying they will now boycott this tour because
they feel that it will be a sanitized presentation. Many

(02:09):
of them showed up the other day at the site
demanding to be let in. They seem to bring television
cameras along with them, you know, in most other lines
of business, when you just show up without an appointment,
they do turn you away. So that's what happened.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
It's funny the way it's almost like they're trying to
make it into something that it's not, because first they
want to say we demand to have access, and okay,
you have access. Okay, we don't want to have access.
We're protesting our access to the facility. But it sounds
like from what the way you're describing it there, it's
a humane situation. It's just not luxurious, and we're not
going to be giving them because, as you point out,
these aren't just like you know, you know, people who

(02:46):
are on vacation. These aren't just like people who need
even comfort. These are people who are criminals, and this
is kind of part of the sort of the punishment.
And they're not even criminals from this country. They came
from countries with far worse conditions than what we're offering here.
You said they're actually climate control, so it's not like
tent I was imagining like a bunch of army tents.
So this is actually like our classic oh I see.

(03:09):
So yeah, so it's tense with air contr.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
The ability to have uh ten you know, ten facilities
with air conditioning is something that we we have. We've
had that for quite a long time.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, right, like like at a wedding like you see
like when they have a wedding out in the field
and they have a big like a big white pop
up tent thing, but there's like an HVAC system kind
of hooked up in the back sort of circulating the air, yes,
cooling it even and the uh and the probably only
problem I can see down there is you know, is
this is Florida and uh, you do this is hurricane

(03:39):
season and there is there is a potential for a
storm coming through. Are there procedures on you know, on
the books for what we would do should there be
a major you know, Cat three, Cat four headed that
way to where we can put them in, I don't know,
a bunker or something like that keep them safe.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
The facility is rated to withstand category two wins, which
is probably what you would get in the Everglades anyway,
Category three, four five. We're talking about managing wind speed.
Those are the wind speeds that are measured and most
sustained in the storm system. It's usually closer to the
center of the storm where you find those winds and

(04:20):
by the time a storm would make some kind of
landfall and the center of that storm, where the most
powerful winds are would get you know that far inland
it would have degraded, it would not have You're not
going to get the category three, four or five winds
in the middle of the Everglades. You might get category
one or two, and this facility is rated for that.

(04:41):
And if there's any concern otherwise, I guess they could
make the decision to bust the inhabitants to an alternate
location for the for a short term while there's a concern.
So I'm not overly concerned that there would be some
kind of unity human sanitarian disaster at this facility. Should

(05:03):
it rain a little bit that it's just not I
don't think that's really a real concern for people, and
you know, other than people wanting to make it a concern,
I will say this next year there is a gubernatorial
election in this state, as the state will move beyond
the era of Ron DeSantis, who is term limited, I

(05:24):
think there's a reason why some Democratic politicians in the
state are going to try to use this facility as
a cause exactly.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
And that was kind of my point, I wasn't. Actually,
I'm not concerned about about their accommodations. I'm really not
concerned about them other than getting them out of here.
My concern is I don't want it to become a
photo op and become this thing that they can point
out and they treat it like a situation like Katrina
and look what they did, Look how they didn't. They
should evacuated them over to Naples and put them up
in the Ritz Carlton. By the way, Evan, did you

(05:52):
know I think Naples is the only place where there's
two Ritz Carltons in the same town.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
You believe that is correct?

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yes, Evan Brown, You're always great to be able to
give us the insight on all things Florida. Edmon Brown
from Fox News, thank you so much for joining us
this morning on Alabama's Morning News.
