Speaker 1 (00:00):
Justin w. Ragling with Glenwood's Pecans for Autism an organization,
a home and a business that takes care of folks
with autism.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
That's right. It's a nonprofit. We've been in business for
over fifty years and we serve individuals with autism and
behavioral health needs to live life to their fullest potential.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
And they live there. Do you also work with autism
folks that live at home but we need your services?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
We do, yes, So we have a residential program. We
also have a building down in Avondale and we help
with behavioral health anything behavioral health related and you don't
have to have an autism diagnosis to be seen there,
but our main focus is autism. We also have a
school on site for kids that are six to twenty

(00:44):
one years old who maybe can't make it at public school,
and so we do that for them at Alan Coott.
We also have a kindergarten program that helps integrate children
into public school. So we have over forty different programs
and services help those with autism and behavioral health needs.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Tell everybody where Glenwood is located.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
So we've We're located just behind Liberty Park off of
Secret Hollow Road three hundred and sixty three acres as
a matter of fact, So we've got houses all over
I did not realize. Yeah, yeah, all over our location there.
And then we also have community homes all throughout from
Bluff Park to North Birmingham, Eastside, west Side where we've
got houses everywhere.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Are these normal families so to speak that take folks
in that you know, kind of like a foster situation.
So how does that work where you have different community
folks in?

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So really what happens is we group individuals with kind
of similar diagnosis and we put them in a home together,
so they become a family in reality.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Right, Okay, Yeah, So when you have the school there
and folks that live, you know, on site that's run
by you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Right, that's correct, Yeah, it is.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
I mean we staff members, volunteers.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Do you we actually have over four hundred and eighty
one employees. Wow, because you're talking about twenty four hour
care three hundred and sixty five days a year.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
I know that one of our guys here at iHeart
has a son that lives there.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Sure does.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Yeah, And Mark lives down at the Lake and has
been an iHeart corporate guy for years. He and I
actually I used to live together years ago, right, he
was at my wedding and how about that. But I've
known Mark Thompson, Mark Chase for years and he cannot
say enough good things about what you do for his
son here.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
It really is a great organization. I've been there since
January and I've learned so much and just that the
need is so big. I mean, you talk about one
in thirty one individuals that are now diagnosed, where you
know it used to be one in ten thousand. Just
you know ten years ago.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Things have changed with what's going on genetically with ingredients
or the shots, is it or we're just more aware
of it now and label it.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
I think it's a little bit of everything. But yeah,
definitely more aware. Know the the the ability to diagnose
has become greater. But you know, the research is still
ongoing and we're we're behind that one hundred percent. We
have research folks there that are that are doing their
job daily and you know, we're we're trying to figure
all that out.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
All right, Well, let's talk about this big event that
happens every year during the holidays. Glenwood's Pecans for Autism
been going on for what forty years?

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Now forty years. It's one thing that's not shut down
like the government's right, it's wide open. We actually opened
on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
How do people get the coffee and the pecan rolls?

Speaker 2 (03:34):
In oh Man? We've got so many great products from
chocolate covered pecans, the hot honey glazed regular pecans. You
go to Pecans for Autism dot org uh and you
can order there. You can stop by the campus that
I was talking about. Right, We've got a full warehouse
there where you can buy products. You can shop there,
ship them to forgive yep, you can ship them out.

(03:56):
We do shipping online as well. And what's really cool
about Pecan for Autism is that some of the individuals
there at Glenwood help pack and deliver the pecans as well.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Wow, so where do you get all the pecans? How
do you produce the chocolates and the coffee and the pecan?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:12):
So, do you have a plant somewhere? You get somebody
partner with you.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
We do, We do have partners. But the pecans are
farmed right here in Alabama and in South Georgia. So
we take all those in and we work to you know,
put the best products. We have some fan favorites. I
think the milk chocolate you just had. Some chocolates also
have a milk chocolate, but when we got our signature
coffees as well, so all kinds of different flavors. Like

(04:38):
I said, you can come to the warehouse and you
can shop everything. Oh and we also have hand painted
ornaments by some of our residents too, so if you're
looking for something to deck the halls with, we've got
those as well.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
All right, So justin once again, where can people go
to help with Glenwood is.

Speaker 2 (04:52):

about the organization and you can help and donate. And
then Pecans for All Autism dot org is where you can
buy the pica.

task and so many good things are happening at Glenwood
