Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us. Roger Wakefield is an expert on blue collar jobs.
Forty two. You're plumbing veteran. Welcome in, Roger, Glad to
have you with me.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Thank you, Jason, how are you this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:09):
I'm doing great. I got to tell you one of
my favorite people in fact, is my plumber. And he's
just a fantastic guy. And we've gotten to know each other,
you know, over the years. And David Pendarvis is his name,
and he does great work. And he was talking to
me about this very thing that you know, if you

(00:30):
get a job, you know, in the blue collar world,
it's not your grandfather's job in the blue car collar
world anymore. It is hard to find master plumbers or
whatever the elite levels are that you know, will do
this type of work. But he goes, I'm telling you,
you can make six figures in this blue collar world,
in today's world. And the gen Zers are starting to

(00:53):
see this with the ROI rather not being so good
on four years of college and then have that debt
and all of a sudden, well, wait a minute, I
can get trained and work my way up to good
pay and always have a job. It seems right, you know,
you can.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
And I love that David looks at it that way
because he's right. But you don't even have to be
a master to make one hundred thousand dollars a year anymore.
I started making one hundred thousand dollars a year. God,
I hate to say it, but but like twenty five
years ago, in nineteen ninety nine, two thousand is when
I crossed over the one hundred thousand dollars mark. And
I've never made less since then. So to be able

(01:30):
to look back at that and think, you know what,
I got this without going to college. I literally got
a job, learned how to plumb. They paid me. Why,
I learned how to do it, and I just kept
moving up and moving up. So no, it's a great opportunity.
I think the gen zs are looking at it like
nobody else is.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
And I also saw a stat that showed they were
actually millionaires in the blue collar world.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Put it this way, I'm actually done in San Antonio.
I'm from Dallas. I'm out of a nice or the
state HCC conference and literally talked to a couple. Soon
as they said their names, I knew who they were.
These are multi millionaires. They own several companies, around Texas
and when I'm talking to the guy, he's a backwoods

(02:14):
country guy like me, And I'm like, this guy here
is a multi multi millionaire, and it just it blows
my mind because I look at him and I see me.
It's like, look, anybody can do this if you just
get in and try hard. That's really all it takes.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, And I know you're a huge as far as
social media goes and a big influencer and you've got
over a million subscribers across your platforms there. Social media
is kind of where it's at. Does that help, you know,
grow this industry? You know, more people share about jobs
that are out there and available to do it, you know,
help people get into the field and also help you know,

(02:51):
companies find good workers.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Everybody needs to know that there's another path. Unfortunately, we've
been told, or at least I was, but I was
growing up. If you don't go to college.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
You're never going to amount to anything.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
And I can't tell you how many times I heard
that from principles, from teachers, from counselors, from my parents.
And college wasn't for me. I mean, don't get me wrong,
I would have loved going and you know, playing college
football and hanging out with college girls. But that would
have been my major. I guess it wouldn't have done

(03:24):
me much. Okay, So I literally decided. I'm like, you
know what a friend of mine had told me about
his father and his three brothers that were plumbers, how
much they loved it. So I decided to go that route,
and I fell in love with it. I'm like, oh
my gosh, I love building things. And it's funny because
when I talk to trades people, and you can ask
David about this driving down the road, if I'm with somebody,

(03:48):
I'm like, you know, I built that building.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
They're like, yeah, I know.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Fuck, how do you know it? Will you tell me
every time.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
We drive by?

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Okay. We have a pride in the trades that I
just don't see in a lot of other things. And
I think gen ze ers are starting to see that
they can go in and build something tangible and it's
always going to be there. They're going to be able
to go back and look at that forever and say, look,
I worked on that, and I think that's just a
neat feeling.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Well, I like it, Roger, you got a great attitude
about it and everything and you've done very well obviously
with your career. So if young people are listening, your
parents are listening. Now going in, you know, where's the
best place to start and taking a completely you know,
hundred needy of your return on your career potential and
look into blue collar jobs. Plumbing is just one of them.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Plumbing, electrical, HVAC. Those are the three that I call
the professionals because normally in most states you have to
have a license. Yeah, anybody that wants to learn more
about it. I've got a website. It's my website Roger
Wakefield dot com. Or go to my YouTube channel and
I teach people about getting into plumbing, how to do it.
There's a lot of different ways to do it, but

(04:49):
I mean to be honest, college isn't for everyone, and
they just need to see that there's an opportunity out there.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Well, I'm gonna start following you, Roger. I enjoyed chatting
with you, Roger Wakefield. Check them out across social media,
talk YouTube seventy million likes between the two. How about that, Roger, Well,
thank you, buddy. I appreciate you. Congrats on your success
and your influence on others coming in.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Jac Thank you and thank you for having me on
this morning. I do appreciate what you're doing. Gen Ziers
need to hear more from people like you.
