Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm John Mounts filling in for a JT today. JT
does return on Monday from his vacation. The border crackdown
is something that all Americans, I think, deep down in
our hearts, we want and we know it's all about security.
It's about keeping us safe from people who shouldn't be here,
people who are trafficking in drugs, trafficking in people, all
these things. Nothing good is coming across that southern border.
(00:23):
But on top of that, as much as it's about security,
Donald Trump also says it's saving us a lot of money.
That's a new angle. Joining me now to talk about
this is Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall. Matt is the
House speaker for the Michigan House of Representatives. Matt, welcome
to the show.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Hey, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
So, Matt, how much money are we talking about saving
because the border control crackdown?
Speaker 2 (00:46):
I think what President Trump's saying is, first of all,
in the big beautiful Bill, he finally has got the
resources for ice that really has long been needed. You know,
under Biden, you know, the illegal alien numbers in this
country surge to about eighteen point six billion illegal aliens
(01:08):
according to some estimates, and so President Trump has gotten
the resources to put to finally finish the border wall,
to fund new deportation centers, to house illegal aliens, to
end the backlog in our immigration courts. You know, under Biden,
they'd have to catch and release because they had nowhere
(01:30):
to put anybody, and they and then the courts were
backlogged for years, so the illegal aliens would just go
into the country and not show up for their court dates.
So you know, these are some really key things. And
then hiring ten thousand new ICE agents to really work
on the interior enforcement. But what President Trump's saying is,
(01:50):
you know, under with the existing resources, we've seen the
border crossings, you know, for illegals go down to nearly
zero and in some places, so you know, we may
not need all of these resources, but now ICE has
the resources they need to really execute President Trump's vision
of launching the largest deportation for us in the history
(02:13):
of our country.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
I think he's basically what he's saying is an ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In other words,
it's a lot easier to stop them before they get here,
then let them in and then let them do things
break our laws do who knows how much damage, and
then we have to push them through our court system here,
which is already backlogged, and then we have to find
a place to house them. Definitely, keeping them out in
the beginning would save us money. Now tracking them down
(02:38):
the ones that Biden already let in, that's a bigger proposition,
and it's an expensive proposition, isn't.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
It It is? Yeah, But you know, President Trump offered
opportunities for illegal aliens to self deport and there you
know reports that many have right and so I think
through the you know, through the show of strength from ICE,
you know, you're seeing that more and more occurring, which
(03:05):
helps with our efforts. But you know, they're going in
and in some of these sanctuary cities. We have sanctuary
jurisdictions here in Michigan, and we're seeing you know, recently
ICE agents coming in and showing themselves and coming in
and arresting illegal alien criminals and beginning the deportation proceedings.
(03:29):
So you know, if they're not going to do them
in these sanctuary jurisdictions, we're seeing ICE wrapping up their
efforts to bring safety because we're seeing in states like Michigan,
you know, illegal alien murders, illegal alien, criminal sexual conduct.
We're seeing fentanyl that's poured in and really hurt our cities.
(03:49):
So we need ice to come in and step in,
and they're doing it, Matt.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
There was a talk show host that I used to
work with years ago. His name is Phil Valentine. Piece
passed away, but he wrote a book called The Concertive Handbook.
And one of the things he called for in his book,
and this was over ten years ago, he said that
we need to demagnetize America. And what he meant by
that was we had a magnet. We have a magnet
here in America. People are enticed to this country because
(04:14):
it is the land of opportunity and there are so
many great things here, and we have this incredible safety
net that you can use should you need it, should
you fall on hard times. And so, with this huge
magnet on and inviting all these people in, and you know,
you heard Joe Biden say it, right, if you want
to come, you should come. We've had this huge magnet on.
And what Donald Trump is essentially doing is he's turning
(04:35):
the magnet off. And once you turn the magnet off,
like you said, the people are going to find this
less enticing of a place to come. They will turn around,
they will stop breaking in to America to get the freebies.
But also we will have enforcement because there's some people
coming here not for the freebies but to do bad stuff.
And so one two punch. Number one, we take away
the freebies. Number two turn we make sure we turn
(04:57):
away the people who are coming here to traffic, rugs
to traffic, fentanyl to traffic people. And that is how
I think we're going to save money. And that is
in the at the end of the day, that's what
Donald Trump is trying to do. You've even heard how
insistent Tom Homan is to get this job done. But
he's meeting a lot of resistance from Democrats who, for
some reason, I think we all know the reason, don't
(05:20):
want to de magnetize America.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah, I mean in blue states like Michigan. You know,
our governor Gretchen Whitmer has been giving free rental subsidies
to illegal aliens. We have sanctuary jurisdictions here. We've seen
food staffs and medicaid in some cases going to illegal aliens.
And so in this big beautiful bill, what President Trump
(05:45):
and the Congress has done is they they've they've they've stopped,
they're stopping this. They're penalizing states that are paying out
the welfare to people that are not eligible or not intended,
and they're putting in requirements in the medicaid program that
are going to stop illegal aliens from receiving those benefits.
(06:07):
And that's exactly right. As you eliminate those benefits, the
illegal aliens, say, have a lot less than Sennath to
come into these sanctuary jurisdictions and sanctuary states.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
And that's one of the things they were saying about
the big beautiful bill that Democrats were saying that it's cruel.
And I guess the question is cruel to who, because
we're talking about turning off the It's like that I
brought this up before.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
You know.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
You go to a national park and there's signs everywhere
they said, do not feed the bears. And the reason
they tell you don't feed the bears is not because
the bears you want them to starve. You're not cruel.
You mean cruels the bears, not by feeding. You're not
feeding the bears because number one, they lose their ability
to fend for themselves. In number two, they become aggressive
and they start attacking people. You get behavior you don't
want when you feed the bears, so much the same
(06:54):
way when you magnetize America. When you feed the illegals,
I don't mean physically, you know, I'm not saying we
want them to starve to death, but I'm saying when
we entice them in, we can't be surprised when then
they come in, they break the laws, They come in
and they take what we're offering. So by stopping the offering,
by making it illegal to feed the bears, the bears
will go back to Venezuela.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah. And we want to you know, preserve our medicaid
system and our other welfare systems to ensure that we're
getting the benefits to Americans. And you know, you see
a big housing crisis in many big cities where they
have large illegal alien populations, and you know, there's a
lot of public policy problems that comes with an unchecked
(07:37):
wave of new people coming into your communities. And so
through the big beautiful Bill and the new Ice enforcement,
we'll see changes that will help all of us.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall, thank you so much for
joining us this morning on Alabama's Morning News.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Thanks for having me
