Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our White House correspondent John Decker in Alaska anticipating the
meeting with President and President Putin. John, welcome in, Thanks
for being here.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Long day of travel. If you've ever gone to Alaska,
it is a long trip to get to where I am.
In fact, it's an actual equidistant trip for President Trump
coming to Anchorage as it is for President Putin coming
from Moscow. For me, it was all long day. But
here I am and getting ready for this big summit
meeting tomorrow involving President Trump and President Putin.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
As a remember the press pool, will you be at
the summit get together? Well, obviously they're going to have
some private conversations, but what will take place tomorrow? What's
the lineup looking like? And when does the President actually land?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Well, the President departs very early from the White House
on Friday, I think about the seven am Eastern time
hour that gets him into Anchorage elmandor fair Force Face
late morning. I would expect that the President and President
Putin would meet for several hours, and then we're told
that the President would have a unilateral press conference, not
(01:07):
a joint press conference, but a unilateral press conference following
his meeting with President.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Putin unilateral versus a joint what's the difference.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Well, the difference is that both leaders would be on
the same stage at the same time. I don't think
that's happening, you know, it just would be very unusual.
But what we saw in Geneva the last time a
US president that was Joe Biden met with a Russian president,
is that both Putin and Biden had press conferences, but
they had their press conferences separately in different locations. And
(01:38):
if there are press conferences, I think that's what would
likely take place on Friday.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
How many different personnel on the staffs of each president
will be attending the meeting or will it just be
the two of them sitting down face to face and
close and going over everything themselves. Do they bring other
parties with them to negotiate, like a conference room or
a cabinet room.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well, there could be an expanded bilateral as it's known,
with many people in the room from both sides, But
I don't think that's happening based upon what I've heard
from the White House, I think it's just going to
be President Trump in the room with President Putin, and
they'll each have an interpreter and that's it. Now. Four
years ago, when Biden had his meeting with President Putin,
it was Biden and the then Secretary of State as
(02:23):
well as Putin and his foreign minister, and each had
an interpreter, and that was it as it relates to
their meeting. I think it's even less as it relates
to the meeting that the President, President Trump will have
with President Putin on Friday.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
So Marco Rubio is not on the trip. Pete Hegseth
is not on trip.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Anybody, No, I think I think they'll be on the
I think that that Mark Rubio most certainly will be
on this trip. I think he'll be traveling on their
Force one. I just don't think he's going to be
in the room when President Trump meets for that one
on one meeting with President Peter.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Right, Okay, now we've talked you, n I John. Both
at the sides, Zelenski and Putin are so far apart
on the major issues, including you know, the land military
advancement and you know NATO stay out let me in.
Has there been any movement now with the President announcing
yesterday that more money has gone to Ukraine, I would
(03:16):
imagine as soon as Putin lands and sits down and goes, hey,
I thought we were talking about this. What are you
doing giving them more money right in the middle of
our discussions here? Where do you Where do you see
me compromise?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
I think I think from by that same token, you
could also have that same conversation of why are you
continuing to attack civilian areas while we're getting ready to
meet and discuss peace. You know, President Trump could say
that to Putin as well. So there's a lot. There's
lots that they're going to talk about tomorrow. And the
President was asked yesterday about the fact that Putin continues
to attack with missile strikes and drone strikes nursing homes
(03:51):
in Ukraine. I mean, they're not involved in the war.
These are civilians. That has really angered the president after
he has has had five different phone conversations with Putin
during the course of President Trump's second term.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
All right, very good, Well, John, enjoy your trip there.
I hope things go well for you, safe travels home,
And obviously tomorrow during the showtime here, the plane will
be in the air for the President, so we'll have
to get an update later in the day on this.
But thank you so much John for spending time with
us this morning. Thanks all right, bye bye
