Speaker 1 (00:00):
As we know, the President is on his Asia tour
right now in a lot of moving parts in the
region out there and joining us now to talk about this.
In just a second, it's going to be our White
House course Mountain, John Decker. But first, a quick comment
from Asia Studies Center director Jeff Smith so talking about
President Trump's openness to meet with North Korea's leader Kim
Jong Un.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
President Trump has never been afraid of unconventional diplomacy. He
was really the first US president willing to engage in
direct negotiations with the North Korean leader in some time,
and I do think he made an honest effort at
achieving a breakthrough with North Korea in his first term.
I think he'd like the opportunity to build upon that.
(00:41):
You know, generally, these leader level meetings require a great
deal of planning and logistics and prep work that go
into them before two leaders can get together in the
same room. President Trump is the type of person that says,
if there's an opportunity, I'm going to take it, and
he will jump out and take that meeting, even if
it's on a day's notice or forty eight hours notice.
(01:02):
Most likely what we would see is a meeting that
would lay the prep work for a bigger meeting probably
in the region, either later this year or next year,
where we might see more concrete deliverables. I think just
the symbolism of having the two meet again though, would
reopen the possibility of negotiations between the two countries.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
One hundred percent. They've met before, so that's down the road.
Meetings taking place now as a president is in Japan.
Also discussions going on with China and the tariffs. Now
apparently there's an agreement. John Decker joins US now, John,
good morning. Wow. Lots of moving parts in this one.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Lots of moving parts. Week long trip the president has
in Asia. The first stop on his trip already complete.
That was to Malaysia for the aussion summit of the
President also announcing a number of trade deals while he
was there in Kuala on pour and including with Vietnam
and Cambodia. And the President now, as you point out,
arrived just a few hours ago in Tokyo to Japan.
(02:00):
They'll spend a few days in Japan. The President from
there will travel to South Korea. And it's while he's
in South Korea that the President indicated he could possibly
meet with Kim jungun, travel over the border to meet
with Kim Jungle, or perhaps at the Joint Security Area
at the DMZ. That's where they could potentially meet. The President,
(02:21):
as you know, is met with Kim jungun on a
few occasions. I was with him the first time that
he met with Kim jungun, that was in Singapore. But
nothing has really come out of those meetings, nothing at all.
And I think the President and its team have to
be very much aware that if a meeting happened, it
would just be essentially a photo up. I don't think
anything substantive would come out of a meeting with Kim jongln.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
All right, so apparently now big agreement with China on
the terrors. But once again, oh, circling back, let's take
a look at Canada. Once again at target John, what's
going on?
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Well, all negotiations as it relates to Canada are off.
The President on the trip from Kuala Lumpur to Japan,
met with her orders in the back of Air Force
one and he indicated he's not even going to be
speaking with the Canadian Prime Minister for now. Very angry
about commercial that was running and planned to run over
(03:13):
the course of the next few weeks in which you
had the words the voice of Ronald Reagan speaking of
extolling the virtues of free trade and talking negatively about tariff.
So the President as a result calling off all trade
negotiations with Canada. So no trade deal reached with Canada,
(03:33):
even though the President has reached trade deals with a
number of other countries, you know, the UK, Japan, South Korea,
the EU, but not our neighbor to the north.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
