Speaker 1 (00:00):
Alabama's Morning News. I'm JT. And joining us now from
the Salvation Army is Major Karen Lyle, who has been
quite active. This is the time of the year for
Angel Tree program, which I think just wrapped up yesterday, right.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Absolutely, so we closed it down at the Galeria Mall
and the shops the Grand River and the toys are
being transported to our warehouse right now to be put
into the family boxes.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Awesome. I mean, what a great idea. The Angel Treat's
been going on for so many years and it gets
to the point where, you know, I did it with
my kids and now I've got grandkids and every year
they were starting to say, when are we going to
get our angel? You know, let's go get our angel.
So good success this year.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Absolutely, the community came out again as usual. We can
always count on Birmingham to take care of their neighbors. Yes,
and so all of our boxes are going to be full.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Oh awesome, I'm so glad to hear that. But the
bell ringers are still out and a lot of people
volunteered to do that every year as well.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Absolutely, the bell ringers are out Monday through Saturday from
now until Christmas Eve and so please come.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Out bell ringers in our area.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I think we have about fifty eight in the whole
Greater Birmingham area. So it is a wonderful opportunity for
you to give to help with not only the Christmas efforts,
but for people who have bills all year long. So
the kettles help do that social services work from January

(01:30):
through June. So it's a wonderful opportunity. We have QR codes,
We've got easy ways for you to donate at the kettles.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
You know, the kettles and the angel trees, and this
time of the year for a lot of organizations like
Jimmy Hale and things like that, the holidays bring out
the spotlights on your organizations. But you're twenty four to seven,
three sixty five all year long out there helping people
with the thrift stores. You've got as well donations through
different opportunities for folks in the area. So how could

(02:02):
people get more involved with Salvation Army and what is
active for you guys right now in our community?

Speaker 2 (02:07):
So we do go seven days a week, twenty four
hours a day, three sixty five. We have a shelter
that holds about two hundred and five people. So we
have women, we have men, and we have families as well,
and we house them, you know, all year long, throughout
throughout the seasons. So that is a wonderful way to

(02:30):
give back to the community as they're experiencing some difficult
times in their lives and we're all one paycheck away
from being in the same spot though they are. So
we our doors are always open. As the weather's getting colder,
we do have places in our outside areas in the
building where we can place people until we can get

(02:52):
them housed in a location. So we are there doing
social services, paying helping people pay mortgages, helping people pay rent,
food assistance, clothing, you name it. If there's an issue
in our community, we do our best to try to
see it through.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
You know, there's a Salvation Army store in Hoover out
where I live, right on their Highway one fifty and
people can drop things off there. Talk to me about
what you like to see people drop off versus what
we don't really want you to bring those types of things.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
So the thrift stores are done by the Adult Realabilitation Center.
Those are men who are in an addiction program and
it can go from nine months to a year and
they learn trades in retail while they're in the program,

(03:43):
and so the thrift store is the next step up
for them to be able to learn how to manage
a store, work in a store, set it up, all
that kind of stuff. So clothing is our biggest item
that sells, and all that money is given back to
the program the community as well. The big furniture items

(04:04):
like our moms and dads used to have those things.
We just don't have the room for those things. And
huge applies, so huge appliances things like that mattresses for
the State of Alabama's or no go anyway. So yeah,
anything else though, if it's brick and brack, if it's uh, televisions, yes,

(04:26):
they take televisions as well.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Small appliances.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Small appliances we can do. It's just larger. We do
not have the ability to fix items. So if they're broken, yeah,
they're just going to get.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Sent to the one.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Absolutely, all ages, all ages, all ranges. We've got low
end clothing all the way to you know Belk, you
know those kind of clothings Nordstrom, and.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
That's open to the public for the thirst stories.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
You can shop these places, yes, you Ken And actually
it's great, a great place for young kids who are
getting into the workplace for them to come and find
a suit or an outfit to wear at a price
that they can afford.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Well, I love the thrift stores. Yeah, and I think
they're great in our communities. Well, I really appreciate you
coming in. How can people help? Website? Salvation Army lots
of things going on all year long.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Absolutely, if they go to Birmingham Salvation Army dot org,
they can find ways to not only donate, which is wonderful,
but they can find ways to volunteer to give back
to the community through all the programming that we have
that runs throughout the year.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Major Karen Lyle, Salvation Army, thank you so much. Merry Christmas.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Thank you. Merry Christmas to you.
