Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boy, it's just a busy Friday around here. Wie Mahs
here with Hoover helps and Greg Bishop, who's also part
of that organization. Apparently Debbie is stuck in a traffic
there's something going on. Sixty five right there is Paul
de Marco's here now as well, and I was just
so you you got in that mess as well.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Then I got off at university and wound my way here.
But it's it's a parking lot this morning, sixty five North.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
If you're on there, I'm glad you guys made it.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
And I got to tell you, Mama Mackenzie, our producer's grandmother,
has made this incredible pumpkin spice cream, cheese icing pecan.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Pumpkin squirrel cake. Okay, there it is spectacular. I just
had a bay.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
It's got the confectionery sugar on out over the pecans
and this is Paula Dean meets Martha Stewart holiday cake.
That you I mean, Paul, you think those you know,
Pepperoni rolls are good in West Virginia.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Wait to you try some of this pumpkin swirl cake deal?
Just incredible.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Well, Debbie, do you want to wait on Greg to
show up so you guys can both talk about what's
going on with it, the big event coming up tomorrow night.
And yes, Hoover helps us all about Paul. Why don't
we start with you then? And then well everybody will
stick around. We'll play the Secret Sound game at eight thirty.
Absolutely have you ever played the Secret Sound game with us?
I haven't.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I don't know what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Oh, you're going to the.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Rules, Yes, Pumpkin Swirl Cake and the Secret sound and
you're just your Friday is on fire right now? All right, Paul,
I do want to get your thoughts on this situation.
Here is now the I guess Alabama Law Enforcement Agency
ALIA has stopped the investigation of this deadly Birmingham officer
involved shooting after the CITIO I guess released the bodycam video.
So what was going on here? Why did things change?
(01:34):
You know, the video always brings the truth.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Well, and this goes back to what happened in Homewood
when you listen to activists and not follow the law.
And Aliah said, we're going to follow the law. You
don't release the video until we complete our investigation. So
now the Birmingham police have jeopardized that investigation because they
release the video. You've got to follow the law which
requires allows the investigating agency to hold back the video
(01:58):
to the complete investigation, talked to all the witnesses. City
of Birmingham bowed to political pressure released the video, and
so Aliah said, wait a second, if you're not going
to follow the law, we're gonna step back. You handle
this yourself. And it's a shame for the officers involved
because you've got to get the entire investigation before you
start releasing the video to the public. Releasing the video
to the public is not as important as completing an investigation.
(02:21):
That's what happened in Homewood. There was a lot of
criticism of Rollingwood. We have a police chief, Tim Ross,
very professionally said we're not going to release that video.
We're going to follow the law. Aliah completed their investigation
and it showed exactly what happened that should have happened
here in Birmingham. They should have never released the video
till Aliyah was completing their investigator.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Well, it can incite anger and get the passions going,
and all of a sudden people are now armshair quarterbacking
what they see.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
I told you see look at this, you.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Know, blah blah blahah, and the investigation may find completely
you know, the video is a part of the investigation
and a part of how they put their pieces together
to come to the conclusion of what happened during the event.
So when you release the video to the public, they're
not getting all of it. They're not getting everything that's
involved in the investigation or the evidence that may present
itself during this. So as Aleiah just saying, fine, you
(03:10):
want to handle it, your weight, deal with the consequences.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
And this is not good.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
And it's not good for the police officers to involve
because again, you got to complete the investigation and follow
the law. If the city leadership and Mermham don't like
the law, get your legislators to change law.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
That is the law.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And again there was a lot of criticism of Homewood,
and Homewood was doing what they needed to do. They
were allowing Aleah to complete their investigation. So again it's
a shame that they did this, but you cannot bow do.
Activists in this case, Black Lives activists Matter. Activists were
saying release the video, release the video, and now you
have Alid pulling back and saying if you're not going
(03:47):
to follow the law City of Birmingham, we're going to
pull back.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Has there been response for Mayor Woodfend or the police
chief in Birmingham to explain why.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
They did this and go against Elea's which no.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I was actually watching for that last night and I
did not see an explanation. But again, I think it's
just bowing to pressure. Now I understand, and you cannot
bow to pressure.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
I one hundred percent agree with you and Aliah bowing out.
I kind of get it's saying, fine, you want to
deal with your own mess, deal with it, and it
is going to be.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
A big mess.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
But you know, like you said, it puts the jeopardy
the lives of the officers and their reputations and their
jobs possibly and in jeopardy, allowing public opinion to kind
of lead the lead the investigation here. So isn't Aliyah
the daddy in the room. Don't they overrule what local
law enforcement if they get involved. Aren't they the state
agency that can say we are not going to get
(04:36):
out of this, we're staying in and you are not
going to release the video.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Well, that's exactly right, and that's again that's what happened
in Homewood, and they said, you know, don't, We've got
to complete the investigation. The City of Birmingham owned their
own release that really they should have let Aliyah complete
their investigation.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Then if they they did it without the permission from Aliah,
absolutely nobody in trouble for that.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Well no, I guess Alia's just saying, if this is
what you're choosing to do, we're going to step back
because we can't complete the investigation the weight it needs
to be done on because you've released a video for this,
everybody being in the whole thing's not over yet, No
it's not, but it's just it should not have happened
this way.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
One hundred percent agree, all right,
